10.Coral reefs
For millions of years, coral reefs have provided homes and food for thousands of different living things.Fish and sea birds share the reef with other sea creatures. Now these beautiful places are in danger.(36)CScientists have found that people and pollution have ruined more than one-fourth of the earth's coral reefs.Unless things change, all of the remaining reefs may die within your lifetime.
Some people think that coral is stone because of its rough, hard surface. But coral is an animal!Tiny polyps (水螅体) form the coral reefs.(37)AThese colours come from the algae (海藻)  living inside the coral.Billions of coral polyps stick together.New ones grow on the dead corals. This happens year after year.Over time, the coral builds up a reef. The reef rises from the ocean floor until it almost reaches the sea's surface. It takes coral 500,000 years to build a huge reef.(38)FThe coral reefs have been harmed in different ways.People have broken off pieces of coral. They wanted to sell or keep them.To catch more fish, people have dropped sticks of dynamite (炸药) into the water.(39)EWater pollution has encouraged overgrowth of the sea plants that grow near coral reefs. They block out the sunlight that the algae need.(40)DWarm water kills the algae. When the algae die,the coral loses both its food and its color. The coral turns white and dies.Scientists call this coral bleaching (珊瑚白化).The bleached part of the coral reef cannot recover.

A.They come in many colours.
B.This has blown up parts of the reefs.
C.So are all the sea plants and animals that depend on them.
D.The worst problem is the heating up of the world's oceans.
E.Coral reefs are experiencing a rapid increase in most locations.
F.However,it has taken human beings less than 100 years to destroy the reefs.
G.They cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but support about 25% of sea creatures.

解答 C A F E D
Now these beautiful places are in danger.
These colours come from the algae (海藻)  living inside the coral这些颜色来自于体内的海藻颜色,所以前句应该也提到珊瑚的颜色问题,故选A.
It takes coral 500,000 years to build a huge reef形成珊瑚礁需要50万年的时间,但是人类破坏只要不到100年的时间,而且后句也提到The coral reefs have been harmed in different ways.
Water pollution has encouraged overgrowth of the sea plants that grow near coral reefs.
根据后句Warm water kills the algae.

3.When Sara and Nathan Jones were training to become foster parents(养父母),their son,Noah,learned a tough thing or two about foster care.For instance,nearly 600 local foster kids changed families every year, and they carried their belongings from one home to the next in black garbage bags.
Noah,then ten,couldn't imagine putting his clothes,favorite toy,and soccer ball into a rubbish bag and dragging it to a new house in the middle of the night."Packing kids'belongings into rubbish bags is like telling them that their stuff has no worth,"says Noah.
So with help from his parents and younger sisters,Macy,then nine,and Molly,then seven,Noah began to collect suitcases and duffel bags from friends and extended family.He then sent letters to churches and put ads in local newspapers and on radio stations asking for donations.Within a few months,the family was collecting about 500 bags a week, which they stored briefly in their spare bathroom and downstairs hallway before giving them to foster care caseworkers at the Department for Community Based Services.
In addition to suitcases,Noah now provides foster kids with backpacks containing shampoo,soap,a journal,and a toy-all donated."My hope is that by giving the children things that are just theirs,they will feel a little control in the midst of the chaos,"says Noah.Noah's group,A Case for Dignity,collects and distributes hundreds of bags a year.He recently convinced foster care managers from 15 Kentucky counties to pledge to use his bags instead of trash bags."I've been so inspired by him,"says his mom."If a ten-year-old can see a problem and create a solution,how much more can we do as adults?"

B.He convinced foster families to be kind to the kids.
C.He collected suitcases and duffel bags from various sources.
D.He made friends with foster kids.
30.What did Noah provide for foster kids besides suitcases?B
A.Backpacks containing money.
B.Backpacks containing shampoo,soap,a journal and a toy.
C.Backpacks containing all kinds of books.

1.Four extra points of IQ,an extra year's education and a significantly enhanced income at the age of 30.Those are the benefits of having been breast-fed,according to a study just published in Lancet Global Health by Bernardo Horta of the Federal University of Pelotas,in Brazil,and his colleagues.
Previous research has suggested that breast-feeding has beneficial long-term effects.But Dr Horta's work is particularly persuasive because it looks at adults rather than children and teenagers,and because it contradicts the suggestion that social class is a confounding variable(混杂变量),with rich mothers tending to breast-feed more than poor mothers do.
The participants in the study were among a group of Brazilians born in Pelotas in 1982.Following a cohort(一群人) like this through their lives is an established method of medical research.It lets doctors test hypotheses that retrospective(涉及以往的) examination,relying on memory,cannot address reliably.In 2012and 2013Dr Horta managed to track down 3,493members of the cohort whose diet as babies,including their consumption of breast milk,had been recorded at the time,ask them some questions,and give them an IQ test.
Comparing those who,as babies,had been breast-fed for less than a month with those who had been so fed for more than a year,Dr Horta found the latter's IQ was 3.76points higher than the former's and that they had attended school for 0.91years longer.The income data were slightly more complicated.Those breast-fed for over a year had incomes 15% higher than those suckled for less than a month,but those breast-fed for six to 12months did even better,at 55%.These effects,moreover,were unaffected by a family's income at the time a study participant was born.
The reasons for this are not known for certain,though it is easy to speculate.Human milk has,presumably,been optimised for human nutrition by evolution.The social contact involved in suckling may also have an effect.But the underlying cause is less important than the result.As Winston Churchill once said,"there is no finer investment for any community than putting milk into babies."Add the word"mother's"in front of"milk",and the returns on that investment get finer still.

41.The benefits of having been breast-fed don't includeA.
A.better academic performance
B.an enhanced income at the age of 30
C.an extra year's education
D.higher IQ
42.Which of the following descriptions about the reasearch is correct according to the passage?C
A.In 2012and 2013Dr Horta managed to track down 3,493people randomly.
B.The participants in the study were among a group of Brazilian adults in 1982.
C.An IQ test was conducted among some memebers of the cohort for the research.
D.The diet of the cohort as babies didn't include their consumption of breast milk.
43.Which of the following statement may the author most probably agree with?D
A.Scientist know exactly the reasons for the influence of suckling.
B.Having been breast-fed as babies will surely influence a person's income in the future positively.
C.The result of suckling is less more important than the cause.
D.Putting milk into babies is very important for any community.
44.The underlined phrase speculate in the last paragraph is closest in meaning toB.
A.understand
B.guess
C.expect
D.know
45.What is the passage mainly about?A
A.Breast-feeding,beneficial to future development.
B.A finer investment-putting milk into babies.
C.The finding of a study.
D.The effect of breast-feeding.
