完形填空

Cross was what people call a mysterious man. We had 1 him for over 5 years, ever 2 he became a member of our modest club, but he had a 3 of keeping his private (私人的) 4 to himself. We knew his 5 , though he did not ever invite us to his house, 6 his age too, but those are only unimportant matters of this kind. It 7 that he did not have to 8 for a living as we did, 9 our various ways. He had once told of an inheritance (遗产) 10 he managed to live comfortably. He was not, 11 , a man of luxurious (奢侈的) habits: he was not expecially 12 and he did not even 13 a car. At the age of forty-five he was 14 unmarried.

Cross disappeared suddenly from our 15 and soon we came to 16 the first really solid 17 about our mysterious man. From 18 that appeared in the newspapers with 19 of a man, who was, 20 , our Cross, we knew that he was a most skilled thief, operating mainly in the London area; and that he had practised this profession (职业) for many years, until he was caught and sent to prison.
