Taylor Bernard and her twin sister were born 12 weeks early. As a result, Taylor suffers from
cerebral palsy (CP). It is a condition that affects the brain. Kids who are born with CP have trouble
controlling the muscles in their body. Taylor is 8 years old now. She uses a powerwheelchair to get
around. Her twin sister Sydney participates in sports, but Taylor has a different interest: art.
Taylor submitted(提交) a watercolor painting of a sunset in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, to an art
contest. Of the more than 5,500 students who took park in the contest, only 51 were selected. Taylor
was one of them. Her winning painting is now being displayed in Union Station, in Washington, D. C.
After leaving Union Station, the exhibit will tour the country.
The contest was sponsored by VSA, the international organization on arts and disability. The
nonprofit group was started to give people with disabilities an opportunity to participate in the arts.
Submissions for the contest came from students with and without disabilities. The exhibition is part of
VSA's International Arts Festival and was also sponsored by CVS Caremark's All Kids Can program.
     Art Changed Her Life
Amanda LaMunyon represented Oklahoma in the exhibition. She just finished her freshman year of
high school. When Amanda was in elementary school, she had problems focusing and following rules.
She has Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism.
"People started looking at her differently," her mother, Sherry LaMunyon, said. "They stopped
looking at her as a girl who was struggling and started looking at her as an artist. It's changed her whole
life."
The president of VSA, Soula Antoniou, said that the point of the exhibition is to focus on students'
abilities, rather than their disabilities. "What we're trying to do is make sure each student finds something
they're good at," she said.
That's exactly what Taylor's done. While she has some difficulty with fine motor skills, she's found that
she's talented with wide brush strokes(笔画) in painting.
     Inspiring Others
Before finding painting, Amanda said she had trouble fitting in. "I didn't have anything that I felt was my
talent," she said. Now she's more focused on school and is interested in studying fashion design and
theater.
Amanda hopes that the exhibition will show others that even if they have disabilities, they have abilities
they don't even know yet. You can see more of Amanda's artwork at amandalamunyon.com.

根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余项。
A.Suggestions on having interviews
B. Be yourself
C. Listen before talking
D. Use your eyes and smile
E. Focus your energy
F. Qualities of good communication
1.________
Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your
good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions.
2. ________
Firstly, the trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change
character from one situation to another. They're the same whether they're having a conversation with their
close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their
whole being.
3. ________
Secondly, whether you're talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them.
Don't break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, and then look
directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The
best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not force.
4. ________
You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can't learn anything when you talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don't immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop
for a second. Absorb what's going on. What's the mood of the others-are they down, up, happy,
expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what's
happening with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk.
5. ________
How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the
meeting-yours and the other's. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus
on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience
and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with you, but they can't
question your belief.

Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed unfortunately. Some
parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and
not the lost child. Here lies the_difficulty,_for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of
the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests,
would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would
develop quite differently. Is it fair to the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?
Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples
might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interests. But
because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance, conflicts would be sure to arise if the
cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no
interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success_also_depends_on_fortune. What if
the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of their parents simply because of bad luck?
Every child should be wanted for itself, as a person. In making a copy of oneself or some famous
person, a parent is purposely specifying the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years,
particularly in the U. S., much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in
ways that they wish. So I suggest there should be a greater need to consider the interests of the child and
to reject these suggested uses of cloning.

1. The underlined part "the difficulty" in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.

A. cloning a baby is difficult
B. it's difficult to give birth to a new baby
C. the dead child can't come back again
D. the cloned baby can't replace the lost child

2. According to the passage, one of the reasons why couples usually decide to clone babies is ________.

A. to bring back a child killed unfortunately
B. to exchange their children
C. to develop the same interests as their child
D. to succeed in making fortune

3. The sentence "Success also depends on fortune" implies that ________.

A. the result may be unpredictable
B. the child does not live up to the parents' hopes
C. the cloned child fails to develop the same interest as the original
D. the baseball player turns to acting

4. We CAN'T conclude that ________ according to the observation made by the author.

A. it's important to consider the interests of the child rather than the suggested uses of cloning
B. parents can't expect to get the lost child back by cloning a new baby
C. much importance should be placed on the right of parents to reproduce babies in ways that they wish
D. every child should be wanted as a unique individual

In our life, we face situations where we are either asked to choose between trust and disbelief.
Many of us would say we have to choose trust over disbelief.Actually we are given intellectual (智力
的) power to choose what we want, and what we choose certainly need not be the one that sounds
pleasing. That is, we can choose both trust and disbelief, but we have to know when to choose between
these two.
We should all realize that we are living in a world which is unfortunately mixed with people of various
types. We have been given the power of judging who we are working with and who we are partnering
with.We cannot give an excuse for believing a scheming (诡计多端的) person, just because he looked
or sounded nice, unless we consider ourselves mentally unskillful.
This world was there before us and it does not owe us a single thing. We are asked to take care of
ourselves and our:belongings.Trust, too, has to be saved for the deserving (值得的) people. When we
give trust universally to all, we end up troubled by the undeserving common cheat.People say trust is life.
True! But only wisely exercised trust is life.
When we start a conversation with someone, the first things that we usually notice would be their

阅读理解
The right to pursue happiness is issued to us all with our birth, but no one seems quite sure what it is.
A holy man in India may think that happiness is in himself. It is in needing nothing from outside himself.
If wanting nothing, he lacks nothing. We westerners, however, are taught that the more we have from
outside ourselves, the happier we will be, and then we are made to want. We are even told it is our duty
to want. Advertising, one of our major industries, exists not to satisfy these desires but to create them---
and to create them faster than any man's money in his pocket can satisfy them. Here, obviously someone is trying to buy the dream of happiness and spending millions upon millions every year in the attempt. Clearly the happiness-market is not running out of customers.
I doubt the holy man's idea of happiness, and I doubt the dreams of the happiness-market, too.
Whatever happiness may be, I believe, it is neither in having nothing nor in having more, but in changing
--- in changing the world and mankind into pure states.
To change is to make efforts to deal with difficulties. As Yeats, a great Irish poet once put it, happiness we get for a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties.
It is easy to understand. We even demand difficulty for the fun in our games. We demand it because
without difficulty there can be no game. And a game is a way of making something hard for the fun of it.
The rules of the game are man-made difficulties. When the player ruins the fun, he always does so by
refusing to play by the roles. It is easier to win at chess if you are free, at your pleasure, to cast away all the rules, but the fun is in winning within the rules.
The same is true to happiness. The buyers and sellers at the happiness-market seem to have lost their
sense of the pleasure of difficulty. Heaven knows what they are  playing, but it seems a dull game. And the Indian holy man seems dull to us, I suppose, because he seems to be refusing to play anything at all.
The western weakness may be in the dreams that happiness can be bought while eastern weakness
may be in the idea that there is such a thing as perfect happiness in man himself. Both of them forget a
basic fact: no difficulty, no happiness.
1. Who shares the same idea of happiness with the author?
A. The Indian holy man
B. The great Irish poet Yeats
C. Advertisers
D. The buyers and sellers at the happiness-market
2. What does "happiness-market" mean in the second paragraph?
A. It means a place in which people can buy things happily
B. It means a market which lacks happy customers
C. It means a pure state for the world and mankind
D. It means a market where people try to buy happiness with money.
3. According to the passage, which of the following is Right?
A. The Indian holy man is much happier than westerner.
B. The westerners understand happiness better than the Indian holy man.
C. There is no fun without playing by the rules
D. Both the eastern weakness and western weakness are the same.
