    Why did Mrs Brown say her husband was really rather clever？Because she found that he had written a notice which looked exactly like a police notice．He made a blue board with white letters on it，but it was not a real one．Being afraid of going to prison，Mr Brown certainly dared not use the word"police"，but he used"polite notice"instead of"police notice"．He was quite clever，wasn't he？
    Paragraph 2：
    If the police discovered that the Browns were using a police notice…they would feel angry and punish them．It was a crime because he offended the police，passing himself off as a policeman．But Mr Brown would remain very calm and ask the policemen to look at the board carefully．The policemen would burst out laughing when they realized what had happened．．

    12．It's not uncommon in America for a person to belong to some kind of volunteer group．Donating one's time and services is very much a part of the American way of life．Most of charitable（慈善的）activities are organized by churches and community organizations around the nation and even encouraged by the government．The helping hand reaches the poor，the homeless and the disabled．
    It appears that this willingness to give and share without calculating the cost becomes most evident around the holiday season when a spirit of goodwill stretches deep into the hearts of all people．
    High school students are often encouraged to become volunteers and many school club activities center around volunteer services．Students may work with disabled children during a summer program，or participate in a club activity which helps to bring meals to senior citizens who are shut-ins．Students see such activities as a way of becoming involved in the community and the adult world．Social action for them becomes as important as their academic studies．
    In a like manner，throughout the year，fundraising drives are conducted by schools and community groups to raise money for a designated（指定的） worthy cause．Dance marathons and church bazaars （义卖） help to gather a group around a needy project to gather funds．They may respond to a recent earthquake in a foreign country，a flood somewhere within their own，or another natural disaster which has left people destitute and homeless．They may organize drives to collect food，clothing and medicines to serve an immediate need．Today even the Halloween custom of"trick or treat"has become an occasion to collect money for a charitable cause．
    This call to assist those less fortunate than themselves arises from the humble （卑微） origins of the American nation．Those immigrants who were poor became dependent on the kindness of their neighbors to make a new life for themselves．
    Volunteers work throughout the world helping local governments in fields as diverse as education and agriculture．They volunteer by serving as a champion of goodwill both at home and abroad，which no doubt enriches both their lives and those whom they serve．
