    12．Like anyone who lives in a major city．Doniece Sandoval，a successful businessperson，sees homeless people everywhere．Two years ago，when Sandoval，then 51，happened upon a young woman crying uncontrollably under an overpass at the San Francisco Design Center，she stopped to listen．The woman said sadly"I'll never be clean．"Sandoval realized how hard it is for homeless people to clean their own bodies．
    Sandoval could have stopped there．She could have written letters to nonprofits（非赢利性组织），or to City Hall，asking someone else to set up more public showers．Instead，she started Lava Mae （Spanish for"wash me"）．It is a nonprofit with a new idea：Take old，unused city buses and retrofit（翻新）them with fully functioning showers for homeless people who can use them for nothing．By early next year，the organization's first retrofitted bus will be taken to the streets of San Francisco．
    "The design of our buses was based on discussions with homeless people，"Sandoval said．For example，many homeless women expressed concern for their safety and privacy while showering．As a result，Sandoval and her team designed two separate bathrooms in each bus，one of which is for persons with disabilities．Each room includes not only a shower，but also a toilet，a sink，and a space to store one's things．Each bus will permit around 30people to shower on a given day．Once all the buses are running，they will be able to provide more than 2，000showers per week．
    This is not a campaign to"end homelessness"，Sandoval pointed out．Some 10to 15percent of the homeless population is chronically（长期地）so，and a shower won't change that．What a shower will do，though，is enable some of them who have lost their dignity（尊严）to retrieve a bit of it，even if only for a few minutes or the few hours that cleanliness lasts．

    The animals are kept together in small spaces，with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise．This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoo-chosis（圈禁性精神病）．A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages．Another study showed that elephants spend 22percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars，and bears spend 30percent of their time walking back and forth，a sign of unhappiness and pain．
    Furthermore，most animals in zoos are not endangered．Captive breeding（圈养繁殖） of endangered big cats，Asian elephants，and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild．Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out．In fact，baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers．Haven't we seen enough competitions to name baby animals？
    Actually，we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them．Instead of supporting zoos，we should support groups that work to protect animals'natural habitats

    They studied how 4，000 participants felt connected to certain groups，and then measured the influence this had upon their levels of happiness．It's important to note that identifying with a group isn't the same as membership，though．You can be a member of a group with which you feel no connection at all．It's that subjective sense of belonging that's crucial for happiness．
    Health care professionals should encourage people to join groups that they are interested in，or which promote their values and ideals，as well as advising people to maintain association with groups they already belong to．Simple social interventions （干预） such as this could in turn help to reduce care expense and prevent future ill health．
