One hot night last July, when our new baby wouldn't or couldn't sleep, I tried everything I could think
of: a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead
of me, I brought a portable TV into his room, thinking that watching the late movie was as good a way as
any to kill off the hours until dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down,
his little eyes focused brightly on the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tip-toed out of
the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi's forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room,
I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby's behaviour a metaphor(隐喻,暗喻)for the new generation. My wife and I
had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit(吐液)upon them. When we read to him,
he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don't read, that they
look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watch TV. After this
experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: "Let them watch it!" If television is that
much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight it? Let them watch it all they want!
1. From the passage we know that the author is a(n) _____.
A. doctor
B. editor
C. writer
D. teacher
2. Why did the writer bring the portable TV into his baby’s room.
A. To amuse his baby
B. To entertain himself
C. To enjoy a celebration
D. To help fall asleep
3. What is the writer's purpose of writing this passage?
A. To show that babies now are hard to please.
B. To show a new function of TV
C. To advise people to let children watch TV.
D. To show the bad influence of TV on children.
4. What do you think the author wants to express through the last two sentences?
A. People have no way to prevent children from watching too much TV.
B. It is not necessary for people to force children to read.
C. People have to take action to protect children from the bad influence of TV.
D. People should try to develop children's interest in reading from an early age.

I received pictures of my daughter floating (漂浮) on a lake in California. Right there under the sun
during the hottest time of the day, she has only her swimsuit to cover her.
When I showed it to my students, it was as if I had shown them scenes from a horror (恐怖) movie.
"But she will get dark," they said.
"That's what she wants," I told them. "We think darker skin (肤色) is beautiful."
They looked at me in disbelief. It was as if I came from the moon.
For years, American girls spend their summer trying to get as tanned (晒黑) as possible. In China,
on the other hand, girls use umbrellas all year round.
What in the world is going on?
The pale skin we think looks unattractive (不漂亮) is what Asian women want. Both groups want
to meet their culture's standard (标准) of beauty.
In the US, if you can afford to go on vacation in the summer, you head for a river, a lake or a beach,
where you try to get as much sun as possible. If you are rich you take a winter vacation in some sunny
spot. Your winter tan shows your wealth.
In China, once upon a time, the few wealthy were the ones who didn't have to work out in the hot
sun. So the whiter the skin, the richer the woman. The folk opera performers who play these ladies wore
lots of white makeup (妆容). The tradition survives to this day.
So it comes naturally that none of my students wishes to follow the Western ways in this regard.
But now I am noticing that a new business - the tanning booth (美黑店) - started up in China. I
admire those brave enough to define(给…下定义)their own idea of beauty, but I do wonder what their
grandmothers would have to say to them about it!
1. The students were shocked at the picture the writer showed them because ______.
A. they thought it shameful for a girl only to wear a swimsuit
B. the writer's daughter was wearing very little while out in the sun
C. it is dangerous for a girl to be out on a lake alone
D. with the powerful sunlight the writer's daughter would have got a suntan
2. According to the article, which kind of woman meets the American standard of beauty?
A. Women with blond hair.
B. Women with a slim figure.
C. Women with tanned skin.
D. Women with pale skin.
3. In the US a winter tan usually means the person _____.
A. is hard-working
B. doesn't have to work
C. has a lot of money and spare time

It was the old lady's eightieth birthday. She was sure Myra wouldn't forgot her mother's birthday,
even if she was busy. After all, eighty was a special birthday. Perhaps Myra might come. Even if Myra
did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened
her cheeks. She was excited like a child.
Mrs. Morrison had brought a card and a bunch of flowers when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs.
Grant downstairs had made a cake. Johnnie, the little boy next door, was now up with her with a packet
of sweets.
"I guess you'll get lots and lots of presents, " he said. "I did last week when I was six."
What would she like? A pair of slippers, perhaps. A blue new cardigan. Or a table lamp. Or a little
clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.
She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart
beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate.

card was a message: Happy Birthday-Buy yourself something nice with the check, Myra and Harold.

As my dad unwrapped the new bicycle helmet (头盔) that I got him for his birthday, I realized that a
number of people ride their bicycles every day without the protection of a helmet.
Due to cold winters across the country, riding has become increasingly dangerous as many roads have
potholes and are torn-up (磨损的). Not everyone realizes that there are laws requiring the wearing of helmets
in many places.
Where I live, there has been a law in place since October l, 1992 stating that cyclists of all ages are required
to wear helmets. Unfortunately, accidents can happen to the best of riders. My dad has been a cyclist for many
years, and he often rides around my county and to Rockland Lake State Park.
One afternoon, as he was just entering the park, he lost control of his bicycle and flew off and landed on a
nearby patch of grass, breaking his helmet into pieces and losing consciousness. When he was just awakening,
a lovely couple found him and brought him back to our house, where he attempted to recap the events leading
up to his fall. Later that day, a CAT scan revealed that he had a concussion(脑震荡). That evening, while my
dad was showing me the pieces of his broken helmet, we both came to a shocking realization.
If he had not worn his helmet, he probably would have cracked his skull and perhaps died. Today, when
my dad and I go out cycling, the wearing of our helmets is not even a question. Regardless of age, everyone
should wear a helmet whenever they get on a bicycle.
1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TURE?
A. Young men needn't wear helmets.
B. The writer's father didn't wear a helmet until the writer bought him one.
C. People don't have to wear helmets on smooth surface roads.
D. Accidents do not happen to the best cyclists.
2. In the writer's opinion, why should people wear bicycle helmets?
A. Because a law requires them to do so.
B. Because many people like wearing bicycle helmets.
C. Because people have realized the importance of wearing helmets.
D. Because the conditions of roads are very poor and it is dangerous to ride on them.
3. The underlined part "we both came to a shocking realization" in Paragraph means "____".
A. we understood how lucky the dad was to have worn a helmet
B. we were shocked to see the broken helmet
C. we realized that young people needn't wear helmets
D. only old people should wear helmets
4. From the accident that happened to the writer's dad, we can infer that ____.
A. the cyclists should follow the law
B. his dad was not worried about this accident
C. it is necessary for cyclists to wear helmets
D. everyone should care about life

For a while, my neighbourhood was taken over by an army of joggers(慢跑者 ) . They  were  there
all  the  time : early  mornings, noons, and evenings. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young
couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. "Come on !" My friend Alex encouraged me
to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. " You'll feel great. "
Well,  I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up
jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience,
jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who
left our neighbourhood jogging army,l'm not alone in my opinion.
First of all ,jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a  real pounding (重击) running  down  a  road  for  two  or  three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a
nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging,
and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any
physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out , as they did with me.
Secondly,  I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes
isn' t my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, " I love being out there with just
my thoughts. " Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and
most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn't just the first week : it was
practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. What a cruel  way
to  do  it !  So  many  other exercises , including  walking , lead
to almost the same results painlessly , so why jog?
I don't jog any more , and  I  don't think  I  ever will. I'm walking two miles three times a week at a
fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting exercise, and I'm
enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to
stay in shape.
1. From the first paragraph, we learn that in the writer's neighbourhood ___________.
A. jogging became very popular
B. people jogged only during the daytime
C. Alex organized an army of joggers
D. jogging provided a chance to get together
2. The underlined word "them" ( Paragraph 3) most probably refers to _________.
A. heart attacks
B. back problems
C. famous joggers
D. physical weaknesses
3. What was the writer's attitude towards jogging in the beginning?
A. He felt it was worth a try.
B. He was very fond of it.
C. He was strongly against it.
D. He thought it must be painful.
4. Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?
A. He disliked doing exercise outside.
B. He found it neither healthy nor interesting.
C. He was afraid of having a heart attack.
D. He was worried about being left alone.
5. F'rom the writer's experience,we can conclude that________.
A. not everyone enjoys jogging
B. he is the only person who hates jogging
C. nothing other than jogging can help people keep fit
D. jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport
