    Healthy Diets

           Instead of buying only fresh foods, Americans nowadays buy many more convenience foods．There are foods which are already partly or completely prepared ．Many of them are frozen, such as frozen dinner, heat-and-serve French fries ,and frozen pizzas．There are also many canned （put in a can） convenience foods．such as ready-made spaghetti （意大利细条实心面）,soups, stews （炖熟菜肴）,and vegetables．

           Convenience foods save time and trouble．They are popular with people who are busy or who don’t like to cook or wash dishes．But they often cost more than fresh ,unprepared foods and may contain artificial additives （a chemical added to the food）．Also, many people feel they don’t taste as good as home cooked foods．

           In the 1960s,a“back-to-the-earth”movement was started by young people in the United States．The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology．From the movement came a new understanding of food and health．Many people now prefer natural and organic（chemical-free）foods to the prepared foods sold in health food stores and in food co-ops, which are small stores and where customers help manage the store ．In co-ops ,food is usually not packaged．Customers bring their own bags and jars and scoop（汲取）their food out of boxes or baskets．

    　　Calling a tomato “a love apple” was a mistake．In the sixteenth century, Spain imported the tomato from South America to Morocco, and then Italian businessmen took it to Italy．The Italian name for the tomato was pomo di Moro－apple of the Moors(荒野)．When French growers imported it from Italy, they thought di Moro meant d’amour, the French word for love．And so pomo di Moro became the apple of love．

    　　People believe many things about the apple．One belief is that it has great powers of keeping people healthy．“An apple a day keeps the doctor away．” Another belief is based on fact．“One rotten apple spoils the barrel．” The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act badly．

For one thing, though their sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer sufferers than before.     The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully.

    The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂质). Cancers seem to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer.

    The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.

    I know what you’re thinking: pizza（比萨饼）? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.

Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.
    So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers—it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it. You may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.
