The five pigs ____ a gene that adds a sugar to the surface of pig cells. The sugar would ____ immune(免疫的) rejection of the tissue.“This advance provides a neartime ____ for overcoming the problem that there is not enough human organs for transplants,”says an expert.“This is the ____ gene for overcoming the ____ stage of rejection.”
____,scientists warn that much more work is necessary ____ organs from copies of the pigs could be transplanted into humans.Human genes will need to be added,to ____ rejection of the organ in the long term. There are also ____ that pig viruses could infect patients.
Cloning techniques were ____ to the production of the pigs.Genes can only be knocked out(去除) in a single cell.Cloning of these single cells then allowed the ____ of a whole animal in which the gene was knocked out in every cell. But the PPL researchers have ____ in knocking out only one copy of the gene. The team will now attempt to knock out both copies of the gene.
The team will also ____ tests to investigate whether a virus from the pigs could infect human cells.“Although a lot of the work is very ____,we’re still very far off being able to grow an organ,” says Julia, who is working on this project and quite ____ to creating similar knockout pigs with researchers at the University of Missouri.

Global warming is when the earth heats up,the temperature rises. It happens when greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide(二氧化氮),and methane(沼气) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This is like when heat is trapped in a car.On a very hot day,the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car,by going through the windows, but it can’t get back out.Once the light is inside the car,it is trapped and the heat builds up,just like it does in the earth’s atmosphere. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth. The heat and light can get through the atmosphere, but it can’t get out.As a result, the temperature rises.
Sometimes the temperature can change in a way that helps us.The greenhouse effect makes the earth appropriate for people to live on.Without it,the earth would be freezing,or on the other hand it would be burning hot.We would not get the sun’s heat and light to make the night somewhat warm.During the day, especially during the summer,it would be burning because the sun would be up with no atmosphere to filter(过滤) it,so people, plants, and animals would be exposed to all the light and heat.
Although the greenhouse effect makes the earth able to have people living on it,if there gets to be too many gases, the earth can get unusually warmer, and many plants, animals, and people will die. They would die because there would be less food (plants like corn, wheat, and other vegetables and fruits). This would happen because the plants would not be able to take in the heat. This would cause us to have less food to eat,but it would also limit the food that animals have.Gradually, people, plants, and animals would all die of hunger.
People are doing many things to try to stop global warming. One thing people are doing is carpooling.Carpooling is driving with someone to a place that you are both going to.This minimizes the amount of greenhouse gases put into the air by a car.
Another thing that people are doing is being more careful about leaving things turned on like the television, computer, and the lights.A lot of people are taking time away from the television, and instead, they are spending more time outdoors. This helps our planet out a lot. Now,more people are even riding buses, walking to school, and riding their bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air.
Planting trees and recycling also help.If you recycle, less trash goes to the dump, and less trash gets burned. As a result, there are fewer greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.Although adults do many things to help stop global warming, kids can do just as much.
小题1:By the example given in Paragraph 1,the author wants to ________.

A.If there is greenhouse effect, all the plants will die.
B.Human beings are likely to disappear from the earth.
C.Crops can’t take the heat if there is greenhouse effect.
D.Although greenhouse effect is necessary, too much of it causes us to die.
小题4:What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Why cars and buses pollute the air a lot.
B.What kids can do to help stop global warming.
C.What global warming is doing to the environment.
D.Who should be responsible for the environmental problems.

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasolinepowered cousins.
People in California love to talk about “zeroemissions vehicles”,but_people_in_California_seem_to_be_clueless_about_where_electricity_comes_from.Power plants mostly use fire to make it.Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells,we get our electricity from generators.Generators are fueled by something—usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal(地热的) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
In other words, those “zeroemissions” cars are likely coalburning cars. It’s just because the coal is burned somewhere else that it looks clean. It is not. It’s as if the California Greens are covering their eyes—“If I can’t see it,it’s not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle;a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it.But when you take that gas(or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmission(传送) lines, etc.
A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won’t get you nearly as far—so electric cars burn more fuel than gaspowered ones.If our electricity came mostly from nukes;or geothermal,or hydro,or solar,or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons,we don’t use much of those energy sources.
In addition, electric cars’ batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it’s a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place.Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.
小题1:What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 2?
A.People see the California Greens everywhere.
B.People in California love to talk about zeroemissions vehicles.
C.People in California love to have their roofs covered with solar cells.
D.People in California have no idea that so far electricity mainly comes from burning coal, oil, etc.

C.People cast doubts on electric cars’ batteries.
D.Gasoline is an efficient way to power a vehicle.
小题3:The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run ________.
A.not less than 25 miles
B.as far as 50 miles
C.as far as 25 miles
D.not more than 25 miles
小题4:It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A.being green is good and should be encouraged in communication
B.electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something
C.zeroemissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment
D.electric cars are now the dominant vehicle compared with gasolinepowered cousins

A book review tells not only what a book is about, but also how successful it is at what it is trying to do.Professors often assign book reviews as practice in careful analytical(分析的) reading.
As a reviewer, you bring together the two strands of accurate, analytical reading and strong, personal response when you indicate(指出) what the book is about and what it might mean to a reader(by explaining what it meant to you).In other words, reviewers answer not only the WHAT but the SO WHAT question about a book. Thus,in writing a review, you combine the skills of describing what is on the page, analyzing how the book tried to achieve its purpose, and expressing your own reactions.
Most book reviews start with a heading that includes all the basic information about the book, like:
Title.
Author.
Place of publication,publisher,date of publication.
Number of pages.
Like most pieces of writing, the review usually begins with an introduction that lets your readers know what the review will say.The first paragraph usually includes the author and title again,so your readers don’t have to look up to find this information. You should also include a very brief description of the contents of the book, the purpose or audience for the book, and your reaction and evaluation.
Then you move into a section of background information that helps place the book in context and discusses how to judge the book.Next, you should give a summary of the main points, quoting(引用) and explaining key phrases from the author. Finally, you get to the heart of your review—your evaluation of the book.In this section, you might discuss some of the following issues:
?How well the book has achieved its goal.
?What possibilities are suggested by the book.
?What the book has left out.
?How the book compares with others on the subject.
?What specific points are not convincing.
?What personal experiences you’ve had related to the subject.
It is important to use labels to carefully distinguish your views from the author’s,so that you don’t confuse your readers.
Then, like other essays, you can end with a direct comment on the book, and tie together issues raised in the review in a conclusion.
There is,of course,no set form, but a general rule is that the first onehalf to twothirds of the review should summarize the author’s main ideas and at least onethird should evaluate the book.
小题1:According to the text, personal response of a book reviewer refers to “________”.
A.accurate and analytical reading
B.the reviewer’s indication of what the book is
C.the reviewer’s indication of what the book meant to a reader
D.skills of describing what is on the page
小题2:What is the most important part of a book review?
A.The heading.B.The evaluation.
C.The conclusion.D.The introduction.
小题3:Readers will get puzzled if ________.
A.there is no heading in a book review
B.the book review is not complex enough
C.the reviewer’s point of view is mixed with the author’s
D.there are some different issues listed in the book review
小题4:What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Steps to read a book.
B.Tips for writing a book review.
C.The way to develop your idea.
D.Things not to be avoided in a book review.

When times get tough,we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry,we eat at home instead of going out.We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all?time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.

One cost?cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four.Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question:Would the quality of undergraduate(本科生)education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “three?year degree”model.
I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three?year curriculum(课程)any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits(学分).In addition,at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out”one quarter of the required credits.Professors will resist “diluting(稀释)”the quality of the education they offer.
In my opinion,a quality four?year education is always superior to a quality three?year education.A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university,we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns(实习生)in meaningful part?time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five?year co?op program at Northeastern University.
小题1:The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________.
A.explanationB.definition
C.introductionD.comment
小题2:In most US universities,________.
A.college students are offered the co?op program
B.electives' credits make up one quarter of the required credits
C.all students are required to finish four?year education before graduation
D.some excellent students can graduate ahead of time
小题3:We can infer that ________.
A.the author is a college professor
B.the author thinks the cost of a university education is too high for people to afford
C.the author considers the university education quality very important
D.the author pays special attention to the all?round development of college students
小题4:Which of the following can be the best title?
A.It's time to shorten the learning process
B.Best learning takes place over time
C.University education should be watered down
D.College education calls for reform

There are some things humans can go without. We can lose a kidney (肾)or a lung, an arm or two and still live perfectly well. But some fish put us to shame. They can get by without stomachs.

One such fish is the stout longtom(尖嘴魚 ). The group it belongs to carries a more appropriate name: the needlefish. All needlefish lack stomachs. Their ancestors had them, but later they were lost.
The stout longtom can reach 1.3 meters in length, and lives near the sea surface. Like all needlefish, it can jump out of the water to escape its enemies. Tropical(热带) fishermen are sometimes injured by needlefish. In 1977, a 10-year-old Hawaiian boy was killed when a needlefish jumped through his brain. The longtom eats smaller fish. Its teeth are not good at cutting fish into pieces, so it swallows fish whole.
Ryan Day from Australia and his colleagues wanted to know how the longtom digests its meaty meals without a stomach, so they ran some chemical tests about the fish.
Day’s results show that the longtom can consume food without the help of a stomach. It uses a special material called trypsin(胰岛素) that can break down proteins without acid — although the approach is less efficient than using a stomach.
Because it’s a meat-eating animal, the longtom gets a lot of protein in its food, so it can afford this slightly less efficient system for absorbing it. Two plant-eating fish that Day studies actually had higher levels of trypsin in their body, as their food was low in protein.
Day thinks that the longtom and its stomachless relatives might actually have arrived at an energy-saving solution. He says that although the stomach is critical to many kinds of animal, the organ is “a fairly expensive organ to run”. This perhaps explains why some animals have got rid of theirs.
小题1:What does the underlined phrase “get by” mean?
A.Live.B.Fight.C.Hunt.D.Recover.
小题2:Ryan Day ran the chemical tests in order to find out how the longtom ______.
A.catches smaller fish in the water
B.can jump so high to escape its enemies
C.digests the smaller fish in its body
D.uses acid to break down the protein
小题3:What plays a key role in the longtom’s digestion process?
A.AcidB.Trypsin.C.The stomach.D.Protein in its body.
小题4:Ryan Day’s results show that ______.
A.the longtom often waste energy
B.the longtom can make acid easily
C.the longtom’s high-protein food helps its unique way of consuming food.
D.meat-eating fish have higher levels of trypsin in their bodies than plant-eating fish

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very probably be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
小题1: The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him____________.
A.at birth
B.through education
C.neither at birth nor through education
D.both at birth and through education
小题2:If a child is born with low intelligence, he can_____________________.
A.become a genius
B.still become a genius if he should be given special education
C.reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
D.not reach his intelligence in his life.
小题3:The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows_________.
A.the importance of their intelligence
B.the importance of their positions
C.the role of environment on intelligence
D.the part that birth plays

Meet the “Tutor Kings and Queens”
“If you want to be a top tutor, it definitely helps if you are young and attractive. Students look at your appearance,” said Kelly Mok, 26, a “tutor queen” at King's Glory, one of Hong Kong's largest tutorial establishments.
Richard Eng from Beacon College, a former secondary school teacher, is often credited with being the first of Hong Kong's “star tutors”. “In school all the teachers look the same, there's no excitement,” he said.
The celebrity tutor phenomenon is a result of the huge growth in outofschool tutoring in Asia. It is fuelled by highly pressured examination systems and ambitious parents wanting their children to secure places at top universities and highstatus secondary schools.
In societies where success is_equated_with good exam results, parental anxiety converts into a “steady stream of revenue(收入)” for tutoring establishments, according to a study by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The tutoring industry, or “shadow education” as the ADB calls it, has become very widespread in Asia, fed by the growth in universities and the rising proportion of school leavers aiming for university. Hong Kong University's professor Mark Bray, one of the authors of the ADB study, said a staggering 72% of finalyear school students in Hong Kong now go to private tutors.
It's not just Hong Kong. Tutoring has “spread and intensified(强化) in Asia and become more commercialized,” said Professor Bray. In South Korea, 90% of primary school children attend such classes. In China, New Oriental Education and Technology has grown to become one of the largest tutoring schools in Asia with around 2.4 million students this year. In South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India, tutorial schools use star tutors to attract even more students.
