8.For many young people, adulthood means being ordinary and struggling under a lot of responsibilities.
"Being an adult is no fun,"says Katrina,an 18-year-old girl from Munich who refused to give her full name."As an adult you're no longer funny-you're a serious person.Adults stop going to parties every weekend. They wear normal clothes and have to think a lot."
Generally speaking,an adult is seen largely as someone able and ready to take over responsibility for his or her life.An adult should also be able to form relationships and to get on well in groups.Money independence is important too:Being an adult means being able to run a household and earn a living. The law states quite simply that at 18 a person becomes an adult, but that may have little to do with the person's own belief.
US author,Robert W.Bly,commented about the same problem in his 1997 book,The Sibling Society:"Adults return to adolescence; and adolescents have no desire to become adults."He is concerned about the loss of appropriate adult role models and the broken lines of communication between the generations. This results in immature behaviour and a generation of"half adults".
Another decisive factor in the growing-up process is the act of leaving the parental home."Mothers especially find it difficult to let go of their children,"says Bly."Young people with a close relationship to their mothers often feel themselves unable, even at the age of 20,to make it alone."
Another possible cause for anxiety at getting older is the youth culture in our society.Youthfulness is associated with performance, and only those who perform are worth anything. The repetition in the press and advertising contributes to this idea."If you are young, attractive and dynamic, you'll make it in this society."No wonder that getting older causes anxiety.

29.It can be inferred from Bly's words thatB.
A.Adults usually go back to their youth.
B.Without proper adult role models, you'll behave immaturely
C.You can succeed if you are young and attractive.
D.Young people always have a close relationship.
30.It can be concluded from the last paragraph thatB.
A.The youth culture plays a part in the worry of the young about getting older.
B.The mass media greatly value the young people.
C.To be young, you'll have to show good performance.
D.Leaving the parental home is necessary for you to grow up.
31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?C.
A.Advantages of young people
B.Disadvantages of being adults
C.Anxieties of young people
D.Youths fear adulthood.

9.Mountaineers can be a pretty tough crowd-and among them the British Joe Simpson has legendary status.In 1985,Simpson set out to climb Siula Grande in South America.Shortly after he reached the peak,Simpson fell through an overhanging ledge of snow and broke his leg.At this altitude a broken leg means almost certain death,but Simpson somehow managed to drag himself across fields of ice and stone until he reached base camp eight kilometers away.He chose immediate goals,such as reaching a nearby rock,and then gave himself a time limit to get there.Over and over again Simpson broke the main task down into smaller goals.
Break your main task into smaller goals.This is often the key to a successful plan to achieve challenging objectives that seem to be"mission impossible".
Language learning,similar to mountain climbing to some extent,is a daunting task facing most language learners.However,learning from the above story,we can apply Simpson's method to language study.My top tips for designing a study plan are as follows:
1.Understand what kind of learner you are.
Some people are"visual learners"and remember best by seeing pictures and visualizing things in their mind; others are"auditory"and are happy to learn by listening;"kinesthetic"learners tend to learn by doing things and experience.
2.Realize your own competence.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?Which skill or skills are you going to improve most?Allocate your time to each skill appropriately.It is better to do a little every day than try to"cram"(死记硬背)lots in a short space of time.
3.Write down your plan on a calendar.
Decide which skill and what area you are going to practice each day.More importantly,your plan should be specific and practical.Once you have a clear goal in your mind,write it down on your calendar.Each day you should carry out your plan according to your schedule.Do not delay or make up any excuses because you fail to complete your daily task.
Studying is like climbing a mountain and you should take one step at a time.At first sight,a mountain may seem extremely high and it is impossible for you to reach its peak.However,when you set out to climb it step by step you will find that it is not so difficult as you think.Similarly,it is also true in language learning.You can improve your language skills in each aspect step by step.Don't be frightened by the seemingly hard task.Break it into smaller goals and you will fulfill your dream.

13.One summer my friend and I decided to go to Italy for a holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a travel agency. You know, you would be submerged(淹没) in crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.
The trip was not ve ry long but it was still very impressive. We looked forward to going there again!Of course,we spent lots of time arranging the trip, but it was well worth it!Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite smoothly in the end.
The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation. In the Italian consulate(领事馆),one must hand in some official paper proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem.Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a hotel about thirty km away from the heart of Rome and it was the perfect choice for our trip.
Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a rare place for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views, hospitable(好客的) hosts, comfortable living conditions which delighted us to no end.Besides this,we were very lucky that our mistress was Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great us.She told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.
Don't be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It's not difficult! The only thing I'll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow countrymen on the way just twice or three times. So,if you're also planning a"single"trip, don't forget to take a Russian-Italian phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native tongue.

F.distraction     G.attentively    H.fatal          I.specifically    J.needed
People who wear headphones might want to throw them away while walking outside.A study finds that accidents involving walkers (41)Ethe devices have increased three times in recent years.
Researchers searched the National Injury Surveillance System, the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission,Google News archives and Westlaw Campus Research, and they found 116 cases of death or injury (42)Bwalkers with headphones.Cases in which people were using mobile phones (including hands-free devices) were not included.
Over the years the number of cases increased,from 16 in 2004 and 2005 to 47 in 2010 and 2011.The victims'average age was 21,and most (68%) were male.The (43)A ( 67% )  were under the age of 30.Most (55%) were hit by trains,and 70 percent of the crashes,most of which were in urban areas,were (44)H.
In 74 percent of the cases, police or eyewitness reports said the walker had headphones on when hit.And 29 percent of reports made mention of horns or warning bells going off before the crash.
The study authors pointed to two likely causes that may be a factor in what they call"the possible (45)Cbetween headphone use and walker injury":sensory deprivation(感官剥夺) and (46)F.The latter is more (47)I called"inattentional blindness,"referring to the use of electronic devices and how they decrease attention to things going on around us.
Hearing what's going on in the environment, they point out, could be more important than  (48)Dclues for walkers. But the authors add that this study doesn't show cause or relationship of headphone use and walker risk, and other factors could have been involved in the accidents, such as walkers being intoxicated(陶醉)or drivers being at fault.
More comprehensive information on such accidents is(49)J,the researchers said,to see which groups of people may be most at risk.
