I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 75 students who would be my English literature class.Having taught in the US for 17 years,I had no      about my ability to hold their attention and to  on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“    !” The entire class rose as I entered the room, and I was somewhat      about how to get them to sit down again, but once that awkwardness (尴尬) was over,I quickly      calmness and began what I thought was a fact—packed lecture, sure to gain their respect—perhaps    their admiration.I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a(n)      of achievement.
My students    diaries. However,as I read them, the happy mood was gradually    by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today.    her next lecture will be better.”Greatly surprised,I read diary after diary, each expressing a     theme.“Didn’t I teach them anything? I described the entire philosophical framework (哲学体系) of Western thought and laid the historical    for all the works we’ll study in class,” I complained.“How    they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it      became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as    of my students.I thought a teacher’s job was to raise    questions and provide enough background so that students could _  their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide      information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
,I also learnt a lot,and my experience with my Chinese students has made me a_  American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.

Every school has an ugly girl. In my primary school, it was me.
From first grade through fourth, I had to wear heavy orthopedic(整形外科的)shoes because of my weak ankles. I sounded like overweight elephant wearing bricks whenever I took a single step.
“Hey, Bigfoot!”
“Geez, you’re going to start an earthquake!”
Then in sixth grade I had to start wear glasses. Mom asked for the least expensive ones and that made me look like a fool.
“Four eyes!”
“Couldn’t you cover up more of your faces? Why stop at the eyes?”
In Seventh, I started competing on the city swim team, thinking that if I got a killer body, nobody would notice my face. Wrong again. I loved being fast and winning ribbons now and then, but now I had red, wet eyes from the chlorine(氯) in the pool. I also did not develop a killer body.
I changed my strategy at Eighth grade, the last year of middle school. I offered my help to anyone who needs. I worked for other girls, so they could hang out with their friends. My new program began to work. People who would never have acknowledged my existence before were suddenly seeking me out.
I’d been feeling pretty good until one day I went to Christine’s house to help her fill envelopes. Going into each envelope was invitation to Christine’s birthday party; it was a big event at a fancy hotel. Complete with dinner. She asked me to help her address these envelopes. There was no envelope for me.
My heart was broken. I tried to escape from all the eyes. High school had to be better, right? Yes and no. Now that I’m here, I know there are still lots of shallow people judging you on what you’re wearing or how cool your hair is , but there are also kids who talk to you because they liked your answers or just as you’re kind, honest, and a good friend.
I still do kind things because I like the feeling I get when I am helping people. I, with my friends, went to Children’s hospital, playing games and reading to the sick kids.
I still had wet red and not a smart look, but you cannot tell me I am not beautiful. Every time I visit hospital, five-year-old Terry grasps my hand, “Morri, you are so nice. I want to grow up to be just like you.”

Oprah Winfrey, born in 1954, is all American talk show host, best known for her multi-award-winning talk show. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world. It's no surprise that her endorsement(认可)can bring overnight sales fortune that defeats most, if not all, marketing campaigns. The star features about 20 products each year On her “Favorite Things” show. There’s even a term for it: the Oprah Effect.
Her television career began unexpectedly. When she was 16 year old, she had the idea of being a journalist to tell other people’s stories in a way that made a difference in their lives and the world. She was on television by the time she was 19 years old. And in 1986 she started her own television show with a continuous determination to succeed at first.
TIME magazine wrote, “People would have doubted Oprah Winfrey’s swift rise to host of the most popular talk show on TV. In a field dominated by white males, she is a black female of big size. As interviewers go, she is no match for Phil Donahue. What she lacks in journalistic toughness, she makes up for in plainspoken curiosity, rich humor and, above all understanding. Guests with sad[stories to tell tend to bring out a tear in Oprah’s eye. They, in turn, often find themselves exposing things they would not imagine telling anyone, much less a national TV audience.”
“I was nervous about the competition and then I became my own competition raising the bar every year, pushing, pushing, pushing myself as hard as I knew. It doesn't matter how far you might rise. At some point you are bound to fall if you’re constantly doing what we do, raising the bar. If you're constantly pushing yourself higher, higher the law of averages, you will at some point fall. And when you do, I want you to know this, remember this: there is no such thing as failure. Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction” as Oprah addressed graduates at Harvard on May 30, 2013.

English was always my favorite subject. In my freshman year of high school, I could write a killer composition. In my second year, my teacher        me to give spelling tests to the class. I had a      time of my junior year. Mrs Alexander        me to sit at her desk and take over the class when she had to leave the room. Only my senior English class was       , as we had a teacher right out of college who expected       work. Every student received a "C" or "D" grade the first quarter. But English was still my favorite subject.
I graduated from high school,      early and had children.       about my English, I often helped my kids with their English homework. And I wrote long articles and beautiful poetry as a columnist for a newspaper. Fifteen years later, I went to college, and because I had been an "A" student, I remained an "A" student. I       up to my own expectations.
Yesterday, I        my high school report cards when I was reading old papers. That bundle of report cards        back the old days. I remembered sitting in my advisor's office, explaining that I had always be       at  English, and recommending that I did not deserve a '"D" from that inexperienced teacher of my senior year. The  advisor was        but unable to change a (an)       . Reading through my old report cards revealed something  else too. I wanted to       them or hide them. I was not an "A" student in high school English! Somehow, I had         myself of this, when the grades clearly reflected an average student with an        "A" or "B" but mostly "C” S.
Had I lived up to those grades and       myself according to those letters, I would have never confidently sought my writing career. Had I       my early grades instead of myself, I would have allowed my fear of failure to       enthusiasm and damage my creativity. Instead, I       my younger self as an "A" English student, except for that undeserved "D".

Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know      you think you are a        person or a coward (懦夫). But you will never really know the answer to this question        you are tested in real life. Some people       they are brave but when they come face to face with real      , they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like      .
Lenny had always thought of himself as a         person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy.         , on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the         water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very           and did a very dangerous thing. He jumped into the river,          to the woman, and kept her head          the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny, it was not           .
When you are in a very        situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. The chemical is called adrenalin (肾上腺素).        adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are        to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified (or completely afraid), the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this       , the muscles become very hard and you find you       go at all. You are then paralyzed (使无能为力) with fear. This is        when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we’re “petrified”. This word comes from the Greek word “petros”, which means “stone”. We are       frightened that we become stonelike.

My three-year-old granddaughter, Tegan, went with her parents to a family gathering at the home of her other grandparents. Everyone was having a wonderful time visiting and catching up on all the latest family news.
Like most children, Tegan was having a good time playing with all the toys that were different from her own and that were kept for children to play with at her grandparents’ house. In particular, Tegan had found a little tea set and had begun pretending that she was having a tea party. She set up all the place settings and arranged her table with the great care and elegance that only a three-year-old can create. Meanwhile, her Daddy was engrossed in conversation, and as he continued to chat with his family, Tegan would hand him a cup of "tea". Her Daddy, who always tries to participate in her games, would pause for a few seconds from his conversation, and say all the proper words and gestures for her tea party which would thrill Tegan. He would request two lumps of sugar. He would tell her how wonderful her tea tasted, and then he would continue his adult conversation with his family.
After going through this routine several times, her Daddy suddenly awoke to reality as he had a flash of concern in his mind: "She is only three years old, where is she getting this ‘tea’ that I've been dutifully drinking?" He quietly followed her, without her knowing, and his fears were growing stronger as he saw her turn and go through the bathroom door. Sure enough, there she was stretching up on her tippy toes reaching up to get her ‘tea’ water -- out of the container of water that grandpa used to soak his false teeth!

A man, who sometimes takes my bus, is in rags. His life seems different from that of the others. He looks exhausted and carries nothing. He appears along a downtown street, seemingly out of nowhere. We sometimes want to know where he sleeps at night.
A few weeks ago he boarded the bus. A few stops later, a young woman boarded. She swiped (刷) her bus-card, only to find the machine would not accept it. The driver told her to pay the $2.25 fare. “I just bought this card,” she said. “I paid the money...”
The driver said she could take the card back to the sales office and explain the problem. In the meantime she would have to pay the fare for that day. The woman became confused and distressed. The rest of us just watched, wondering how the problem would be solved. Suddenly the man rose from his seat, dropped a few coins into the fare box.
“You’re lucky,” the bus driver said quietly. “He paid for you.” Silence fell over the bus. The rest of us had watched the woman’s discomfort, but he felt it. We lawyers, journalists and business people headed downtown to help fix the world. He fixed her world.
I haven’t seen him since that day. Some people believe angels occasionally drop down and move among us. All I know is that I have a new respect for the simple act of kindness. It speeds us along on our way.
