    20．We talk about people being"color-blind"but very few of us are．Even those who describe  themselves as color-blind are normally just color lack．A strongly color-blind person will still be able to tell 20different colors，compared to the 100or so that normal-sighted people see．
    Pingelap，a tiny island in the Pacific，is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble．It is known as Color Blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only see in black and white．
    Not being able to see in color is bad enough．But one islander，Herrol，who's a fisherman，also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image．"I find it difficult to go outside in the sun，"he says，"because when it's sunny I cannot see to do my work．"
    But if being truly color-blind is rare，why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap lire in a totally black and white world？
    Well，we know that in 1780the population of Pingelap was all but wiped out by a tsunami．As few as 20people survived，one of whom was the king．It's believed he had a genetic fault that causes color-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations．
    There is one advantage．Herrol can see well，really well，in the dark．So when it gets dark，Herro1and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish．They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames．"This type of fishing is fun，"Herrol says，"especially if we catch plenty．So even though it's hard work we enjoy it．"

    11．Where do you keep ice？In die freezer，of course．That's what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world．They've decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt．

    The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station，which is operated by scientists from France and Italy．The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10meters below the surface at a constant temperature of-50*C．This will put the scientists'minds at rest．Losing the ice samples would be a disaster，and nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool．

    The idea is simple．Air would be blown over a liquid solution of potassium carbonate，which would absorb the carbon dioxide．The carbon dioxide would then be put to chemical reactions that would turn it into fuel（燃料）：gasoline or jet fuel．
    This process could change carbon dioxide from an unwanted，climate-changing pollutant into a vast resource for renewable fuels．The cycle-equal amounts of carbon dioxide produced and removed-would mean that cars，trucks and airplanes using the synthetic （合成的） fuels would no longer be contributing to global warming．
    Although they have not yet built a synthetic fuel factory，or even a small model，the scientists say it is all based on existing technology．"Everything in the concept has been built，is operating or has a close cousin that is operating．"Dr．Martin said．
    The Los Alamos proposal does not go against any laws of physics，and other scientists who have independently suggested similar ideas．r．Martin said he and Dr．Kubic had worked out their concept in more detail than former proposals．
    There is，however，a major fact that explains why no one has built a carbon-dioxide-to-gasoline factory：it requires a great deal of energy．
    According to their analysis，their concept，which would cost about 5billiontobuild，couldproducegasolineatanoperatingcostof1.40a gallon and would turn economically practical when the price at the pump hits $4.60a gallon．
    Other scientists said the Los Alamos proposal perhaps looked promising but could not evaluate it fully because the details has not been published．"It's definitely worth pursuing，"said Martin I．Hoffert，a professor of physics at New York University．"It's not that new an idea．It has a couple of pieces to it that are interesting．"

    In December 1990，the World Wide Web was demonstrated（展示）and in 1991，the WWW project was made public，so that other programmers could develop their own browsers．Berners-Lee believed that it could be used for more than scientific purposes．He wanted the Internet to be easy for anyone to use-a free open software．His wishes soon came true．
