    Words can hurt
    I remember the pain most vividly. My stomach was sick, my heart hurt, and my eyes stung(刺痛的) from holding back tears.
    “you know, Autumn,” my friend Nick said, “Lisa and Andrea were just talking about you.” I immediately got nervous. “They said that the only reason you start on the basketball team is because the coach （教练）likes you .It’s not because you’re good.” I might be sick. “They said they’re tired of you always getting what you want.”

    Lisa and Andrea came in from lunch break acting as if nothing had happened . Lisa was still my deskmate, and Andrea was still my partner for our history project.
    I was amazed at their ability to pretend we had the perfect friendship, especially since they’d said such hurtful things.
    I was a freshman in high school, and I felt like I didn’t have a friend in the world, all because of a rumor（谣言）.
    The tongue can be our worst enemy. Rumors harm confidence（信心） and separate close friends. They are like sharp knives, cutting one’s dignity（尊严） into pieces. When we say unkind things about others, we’re thrusting(插) knives into their hearts.
    So how was I to act next? When Lisa and Andrea pretended our friendship hadn’t changed, I thought of attacking them back. But instead, I told them directly that they had hurt me. Lisa started crying and Andrea was speechless. I know they were both sorry for what they had said. They apologized, and I forgave them with grace(优雅). Sure, things were a little awkward(尴尬) at first, but soon enough everything was back to the way it had been before.
    I still deal with gossip（流言）, sometimes as a recipient（接受者） and sometimes as a participant（参与者）. But the more I learn about love, the more I realize the importance of encouraging others- sometimes gossip never does.

    We don’t plan to cry, but it just happens. In fact when we feel sad or angry, a good cry is almost impossible to resist. But if you didn’t know what crying was, you’d have to wonder why some strong feelings started water streaming from people’s eyes and why they seemed to feel better afterwards.
    Now a US researcher had found there may be more in crying than we think. William H. Frey II, author of “Crying: The Mystery of Tears,” believes it may really be one of the body’s clever self-repair mechanisms. Crying may be a way of getting rid of the by-products of stress, he says.

    A small town in Tasmania, an island off the south coast of mainland Australia, is making itself an environmental role model by becoming the country's first plastic bag-free town.
    Since April 28, Coles Bay's population of 175 and its tourist shoppers have been using reusable paper or cloth bags to carry their shopping.
    Ben Keamey, a local businessman who supports the bag ban, said it would cut  the amount of waste and prevent damage to native wildlife that try to eat the plastic.
    "Most businesses here come from the tourism and that's all based on the environment, so people were pretty supportive," he said.
    Every year Australians use more than six billion plastic bags. More than half of these come from the supermarket. Since it takes years for the bags to biodegrade（生物递减分解）, tens of millions end up polluting the environment. They kill about 100,000 sea-birds and animals, which mistake bags for food, every year.
    Only in the past few months have major Australian supermarkets begun cutting on their use of plastic bags. Environmental groups are pushing for a plastic bag fee like that in Ireland. There, since plastic bags cost 10 pence (about 1 yuan) each, their use has been cut by 90 per cent.
    Pollution caused by plastic bags is a big headache for countries all over the world. As early as 1999, Beijing said that only plastic bags of certain thickness could be used. This was to encourage them to be used again and again, since an average of six million plastic bags are used there every there every single day.

    First Lady Michelle Obama urged students to visit China at the "100,000 Strong" China Study Abroad forum at Howard University in 2011.
    President Barack Obama announced the "100,000 Strong" Initiative （倡议） during his 2009 visit to China. The program aims to increase and diversify the number of American students studying in China by making studying abroad more affordable.
    During the event at Howard, Mrs. Obama spoke about the importance of studying abroad, something she never did while in college. He noticed a young chef signaling him to come over. "He presses the play button on his media player and starts singing 'California Dreaming' and wants me to sing along with him," Marzban said. "At this time I knew a great friendship had started during my first two weeks in China."

"You have to experience the culture while learning the language to really master it and to understand why things are how they are compared to your own culture," Baden said.
    Mrs. Obama encouraged students to set aside concept that studying abroad is for rich kids only or for those attending certain schools. In addition, the first lady announced that the Chinese government is giving 10,000 "Bridge Scholarships" to cover costs for American students and teachers studying in China.
    Students from several schools attended the forum. 12-year-old Sarah Davis, who studied in China last summer, said she was very excited to hear Michelle Obama talk about the country. “I love Chinese. Out of all the languages I’ve learned, Chinese is the most difficult and interesting,” she said.

    An experimental treatment that causes AIDS patients to develop a dangerously high fever has shown promise as a way of prolonging and improving the patients’ life.Called the Biologic-HT System, the new treatment lets doctors extract the blood of a patient and heat it before circulating it back into the body. The heated blood causes the patient’s body temperature to rise above 42 degrees Celsius. In people with AIDS, that increase in temperature kills some heat-sensitive HIV, the virus, most doctors say, causes AIDS.
    Heating the blood of AIDS patients has been tried before, say doctors. But during previous attempts, the treatment induced deadly chemical changes in the blood. The Biologic-HT System prevents those changes from happening, allowing the heat to kill viruses with few ill side effects.
    The new heat treatment cannot be considered a cure for Aids, says president of the company that makes the system. He says the treatment doesn’t kill all traces of the virus. However, it kills enough virus particles to give a patient’s immune system a reprieve in its deadly duel with HIV.
    Tests of the Biologic-HT treatment began on 36 patients earlier this year. The treatment takes about four hours, and the patient normally feels well enough to leave the hospital or clinic the following morning.
    So far, the patients who have had the treatment say they feel better and have developed no new opportunistic infections—disease that strike people with damaged immune systems. The patients also have experienced about a 50 percent increase in the number of T cells in their bodies. T cells are key disease-fighting cells of the immune system and the main target of HIV.
