I once had a friend that was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and the news that he might only live up to six months was a great shock to him, his family, and his friends£®However, in spite of the serious illness, he was initially determined to look into all available treatments that might cure or extend his life. I think that when you find yourself in such situations, you tend to look up every possible way for hope of saving your life.

As months went on and his health grew worse, I noticed an unexpected change in attitude that came over him£®He had also been a happy person with a cheerful personality, but rather than give in to discouragement and self-pity, he took comfort in God and humanity. His talks focused on others rather than himself, and he spoke of the afterlife as something he was prepared for, believing that his concerned ancestors, including his mother and father, were there waiting for him.

During the last few months, weeks, and days of his life, he was kindly cared for by family, friends, his loving wife, who looked after both his physical and emotional needs, and workers from a local hospice £¨°²ÑøÔº£© came to the home to regulate his medication and provide any other needed support. He didn't complain about his fate, and he willingly allowed others to serve him.

Indeed, one might think why God allows death and suffering in our world, but for me, such experiences taught me to value family more and kindness for others. You often can't learn these important attributes(ÊôÐÔ) in the lap of luxury(ÓÅÔ£ÊæÊʵĻ·¾³), and perhaps, such an experience is the greatest and final gift the illness can give those left behind.

Understanding Disabilities

There are around 650 million people in the world that have disabilities£¬yet most people are still quite ignorant (ÎÞÖªµÄ) about it.

1£®What do you think of when you see the word£¬¡®disability¡¯£¿

Wheelchairs? White sticks? The Paralympics (²Ð°Â»á)? 1. The legal definition of disability is that someone has a physical or mental impairment that has a great and long?term bad effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day?to?day activities.

This affects about 650 million of us£¬worldwide. 2. Most become disabled during the course of their life. So maybe the term TAB (Temporarily Able?Bodied) is better for people who are not disabled£¬because we may not stay that way forever.

2£® 3.

Imagine not being able to see£¬or not being able to walk. Think of all the things that would be different. How can I get my education? What about my future? Would my friends still want to hang out with me? Will strangers laugh at me in the street? Can I get my own place? What job can I do?

Clearly£¬having a disability can affect many things in a person's life.

3£®Disability and the law

4. It is illegal and extremely unpleasant to discriminate (ÆçÊÓ) against someone who is differently abled. The label ¡®disabled¡¯ is not always helpful. Even if someone meets the legal definition£¬they may not see themselves that way. Instead of thinking about what is wrong with those people£¬or noticing what they can't do£¬we should look at how we like to live£¬and try to make it possible for everyone to join in.

After all¡ªwhat is normal£¿ 5. But better understanding would be a start.

A£®How can the disabled find better jobs?

B£®How does disability affect people?

C£®People with disabilities don't need pity.

D£®Most of us have never really thought about it.

E£®We should consider more for people with disabilities.

F£®Only 17% of people with a disability are born with it.

G£®There are laws to prevent people with disabilities being treated unfairly.

Jack threw the papers on my desk. ¡°Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,¡± he said. I had changed a long sentence and corrected its grammar ¡ª something I thought I was paid to do.

Several days later, he made me angry again. I went to his office, prepared to lose my job if need be, but not before I let the man know how I felt. ¡°What?¡± he said nervously. Suddenly I knew what I had to do. ¡°Jack, the way you¡¯ve been treating me is wrong. And it¡¯s wrong for me to allow it to continue,¡± I said. ¡°I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend.¡± The next day I brought some cakes to Jack¡¯s office. Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiled at him. After all, that¡¯s what friends do.

One year after our talk, I was told that I had breast cancer (ÈéÏÙ°©). When I was in hospital, my friends tried to find the right words to say, but no one could. The last day of my hospital stay, the door opened and Jack walked over to my bed. ¡°Tulips (Óô½ðÏã),¡± he placed some bulbs (Çò¾¥) beside me and said, ¡°If you plant them when you get home, you¡¯ll be there to see them when they come up.¡± Tears filled my eyes. In a moment when I prayed for just the right words, a man with few words said the right thing. After all, that¡¯s what friends do. Now, I have seen those tulips push through the soil every spring for over ten years.

1.Why did Jack throw some papers on the author¡¯s desk?

A. She gave him the wrong papers.

B. He thought her report was very bad.

C. He wanted her to check them again.

D. He didn¡¯t agree with her correction.

2.What promise did the author make to Jack?

A. She would work harder from then on.

B. She would treat him the same way.

C. She would bring him some cakes.

D. She would treat him like a friend.

3.The tulip bulbs that Jack gave the author probably suggest ______.

A. love B. honor C. hope D. thanks

4.What did the author mean by saying ¡°that¡¯s what friends do¡±?

A. Friends must help each other to correct mistakes.

B. Friends should give advice to each other at the right time.

C. Friends should treat each other with respect and kindness.

D. Friends should do anything for each other.
