An old lady was walking with her basket down the middle of a street in Petrograd to the great confusion of the traffic and with no small danger to herself. It was pointed out to her that the pavement was the place for pedestrians, but she replied: “I’m going to walk where I like. We’ve got liberty now.” It did not occur to the dear old lady that if liberty entitled(授权)the pedestrian to walk down the middle of the road, then the end of such liberty would be universal chaos. Everybody would be getting in everybody else’s way and nobody would get anywhere. Individual liberty would have become social chaos.

There is a danger of the world getting liberty-drunk in these days like the old lady, and it is just as well to remind ourselves of what the rule of the road means .It means that in order that the liberties of all may be preserved, the liberties of everybody must be limited. When the policeman steps into the middle of the road and puts out his hand, he is the symbol not of tyranny(暴政), but of liberty.

Liberty is not a personal affair only, but a social contract(契约). In matters which do not touch anybody else’s liberty, of course, I may be as free as 1 like. If I go down the street dressed strangely, who shall say me no? We have a whole kingdom in which we rule alone and can do what we choose. But directly we step out of that kingdom, our personal liberty of action becomes qualified by other people’s liberty.

We all tend to forget this. A reasonable consideration for the rights or feelings of others is the base of social conduct.

1.What does the first paragraph serve as?

A. A background. B. An introduction. C. A comment. D. An explanation.

2.Which is an example of getting liberty-drunk?

A. Park anywhere you like. B. Walk along the pavement.

C. Wear whatever you like. D. Make loud noises in the wild.

3.What might the author have stated his “rule of the road” (Paragraph 2) as?

A. Follow the orders of policemen. B. Do what you like in private.

C. Never walk in the middle of the road. D. Do not behave inconsiderately in public.

4.What does the underlined word “qualified” (Paragraph 3) mean?

A. Limited. B. Ruined. C. Improved. D. Educated.

Time, wars and natural disasters have a bad effect on the artistic and cultural objects in the world. More than 1,000 years ago, a fire destroyed the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. In 1755, an earthquake destroyed Ribeira Palace in Lisbon, Portugal, along with artworks inside. In modern times, the Taliban destroyed the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.

As we all know, museums play an important part in our daily liv es. They store evidence of culture and history and exhibit great works. A major goal of most museums in the world is to make sure that important historical objects do not disappear forever. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, holds 1,250 pieces of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. These objects have inspired artists and historians for many years. So the museum is working to make a complete and permanent (永久的) record of the artworks.

The project is an effort of both the museum and the scientists from Indiana University in the United States. The team is using technology to create digital copies (数字复制品) of Uffizi’s ancient sculptures.

The process is called photogrammetry (摄影制图法). At one time, this process was slow and expensive. But not anymore, said Professor Robert Frischer. He said photogrammetry is now much faster and cheaper. Now they can gather the 3-D data on a life-size sculpture in half an hour and they can process the data just in a couple of hours.

The images allow the viewer to examine the sculpture from all sides. And when the viewer zooms in (用变焦距镜头放大), the image becomes clearer. The Uffizi hopes to have the collection completed and available on the Internet by 2020.

1.What can we learn about the world’s artworks?

A. Some of them have been destroyed.

B. They were destroyed by accident.

C. They were not protected by humans.

D. Most of them are kept in Afghanistan now.

2.Why do Uffizi Gallery and Indiana University work together?

A. To build the largest museum.

B. To create long-lasting artworks.

C. To introduce some ancient sculpture.

D. To encourage more artists and historians.

3.What can we learn about photogrammetry?

A. It is still expensive.

B. It is a time-saving step now.

C. It does great harm to the artworks.

D. It was invented by Robert Frischer.

When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.

Her owner Mike Holden panicked and called the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds. Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search.

Three days later, a hurricane(飓风) hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country.

For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken. Then, one day, the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog back.

A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting hopelessly on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy.

The dog had been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)at first but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added.

It was, as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.

1.The dog Judy fell down the cliff when she was ________.

A. rescuing her owner B. caught in a hurricane

C. blocked by a rock D. running after a sheep

2.Who spotted Judy after the accident?

A. A student from Leeds B. A birdwatcher

C. Six volunteers D. The coastguard of Cornwall

3.What can we infer from the text?

A. People like to travel with their pets.

B. Judy was taken to the fields for hunting.

C. Holden cared little where Judy was buried.

D. Luck plays an important role in Judy's survival.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Miracle of the Coastguard. B. Coming Back from the Dead.

C. Dangers in the Wild D. Surviving a Hurricane.

Do you drink water that's been left sitting out overnight or even for another day? Have you noticed it tastes different?

Tap water that has been left to sit out slowly begins to acquire(获得) off taste. Many people think that this is because of microorganisms. But that's not what makes old water taste not fresh. For that we can thank carbon dioxide. After about 12 hours, tap water starts to go flat as carbon dioxide in the air starts to mix with the water in the glass, lowering its pH and giving it an off taste. But it's most likely safe to drink.

However, back to those microorganisms. If you use a dirty glass day after day, there is more of a chance of bacteria making themselves known; a risk that increases if you share the glass with another mouth as well. But assuming(假设) you use a fresh glass every few days, you probably won't have a problem unless the glass has been touched by dirty fingers, and especially if those dirty fingers went unwashed after using the bathroom.

As for plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car, step away from the bottle, warns Dr. Kellogg Schwab, director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute. "A chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA, along with other things used to make plastic can leach(过滤) into your water if the bottle heats up or sits in the sun," he explains. BPA, as you probably know, has been linked to everything from heart disease to cancer. Schwab also adds that plastic used for commercial bottled water isn't meant to be washed or refilled, so use only one time and recycle. Or don't buy them at all; use refillable water bottles instead.

1.Tap water begin to acquire an off taste because of______ .

A. BPA B. carbon dioxide

C. the glass D. the microorganism

2.According to Paragragh 2 , tap water that's been left sitting out for 12 hours____.

A. is still safe to drink B. tastes better

C. contains few microorganisms D. is most likely undrinkable

3.What should we do with plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car?

A. Throw them away.

B. Clean them and use them again.

C. Use them after they cool down.

D. Refill them with fresh water.

4.Which of the following is true about BPA

A. It is safe for people to use.

B. It is a kind of new material.

C. It can cause great harm to people.

D. It is the main material to make plastic.

When children start kindergarten, evident gaps in science knowledge already exist between Whites and minorities and between youngsters from upper-income and low-income families. And they often deepen into significant achievement gaps by the end of eighth grade if they are not dealt with during elementary school.

The findings suggest that, in order to the United States to maintain long-term scientific and economic competitiveness in the world, policymakers need to renew efforts to ensure access to high-quality, early learning experiences in childcare settings, preschools and elementary schools.

The researchers’ study tracked 7,757 children from their start in kindergarten to the end of eighth grade. Researchers found that, among kindergarteners with low levels of general knowledge, 62 percent were struggling in science by the time they reached third grade and 54 percent were struggling in that subject in eighth grade. And general knowledge gaps between minorities and Whites were already large at the time when students began kindergarten.

“Children growing up in low-income families typically experience comparatively fewer early opportunities to learn about the natural and social sciences,” the authors wrote. “Their parents often have lower educational levels and therefore less science knowledge themselves as well as fewer resources available to direct the children's academic growth. Children raised in poverty often attend poorly resourced schools that further limit their academic opportunities.”

Morgan said that, within families, parents who regularly talk and interact with toddlers(学步的儿童) can point out and explain physical, natural and social events occurring around them daily. This might help youngsters learn facts and concepts that will prepare them to take better advantage of science instruction they receive during elementary and middle school.

1.Which may be the possible result of the gaps in science knowledge during kindergarten?

A. Children from rich families will behave better in life.

B. Children from minorities may have less desire for learning.

C. The gaps will disappear automatically when children grow up.

D. Children's academic performance afterwards will be affected.

2.What did the researchers suggest policymakers do?

A. Narrow income gaps between different families.

B. Make good education available to children.

C. Give extra lessons to children from poor families.

D. Strengthen competitive awareness of kindergarteners.

3.What can parents do to help their toddlers learn?

A. Offer them more learning resources.

B. Give them more nutritious food.

C. Create learning opportunities in daily life.

D. Let them attend science courses for kids.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Equal Education Is Important in Kindergarten

B. Income Gaps Affect Children's School Performances

C. Provide More Available Access to Childhood Learning

D. Science Knowledge Gaps Are Obvious in Kindergarten
