Conversation 1

W: David, you can play the guitar, can’t you?

M: I have played for about six years. But I haven’t practised it much since I went to college. Why do you ask?

W: I’m singing for a group that meets every Wednesday. We have several piano and violin players, but not one guitar player.

M: Who is directing the group?

W: Janet Pearson.

M: Well, I’m afraid I need a lot of practice before I can play before audience.

W: Don’t worry about that. Miss Pearson will teach you if necessary.

M: Then I think I can have a try.

W: I’m sure you’ll be just fine. I expect to see you next Wednesday.

Conversation 2

M: I think I was very lucky to get that job. Now we are able to live in a little village.

W: Ah, but it won’t be a little village forever. This is a developing area. There will be a lot more people here in about five years’ time.

M: Yes, but there won’t be any factories. Just two or three office buildings and they will be far behind that woodland over there.

W: How did you sleep last night, by the way?

M: Very mice. Never slept better. It was so quiet!

W: I didn’t sleep too well. I couldn’t get used to the silence. The only noise I heard last night was some birds at about two o’clock in the morning.

M: Well, the silence was wonderful for me.

Conversation 3

W: Excuse me, please. I seem to have lost my purse.

M: Oh, I see. Well, I’ll have to fill out this lost and found report for you. It was a purse, you say?

W: That’s right.

M: What is it like, ma’ma?

W: Well, it’s a black leather one with my driver’s license, some name cards, and about fifty dollars in it.

M: Where did you last have it?

W: I’m pretty sure I had it when I was in the coffee shop.

M: When was that?

W: About 1:30 I think.

M: Where did you go after that?

W: To the shoe department, and then I came here.

M: I’m sure it will turn up. Now could you give me your name, address and phone number?

W: Mrs, Jane Thomas, 25 King Street, and my phone number is 88936579.

Conversation 4

W: Steve, it’s almost vacation time. Have you found a summer job yet?

M: I suppose I can work at the boys’ camp where I worked last summer. What’s your plan, Wendy?

W: I think I can get a job at the Evergreen Hotel. A friend of mine was a waitress there last summer. The pay wasn’t good, but she got lots of tips.

M: My sister worked there once, making beds and cleaning bathrooms. She didn’t like it, but she earned quite a lot of money.

W: That’s good.

M: What I want is a job outside. After sitting in college classes all winter, I’d like a job in the open air.

W: My brother is only fourteen, but he gets five dollars every time he cuts somebody’s grass, and it only takes him an hour.

M: That’s pretty good. I used to cut grass when I was in high school. But now I think I would want a job that allows me to practise what I have learned in class.

W: Yeah, I agree with you.

Conversation 5

M: Excuse me, can you help me?

W: Of course. What can I do for you?

M: Can you tell me how I can get to the Excelsior Hotel from here?

W: The Excelsior? Let's see, that's in the city, right?

M: Yes, it is. On Forty-third Street, just off Eleventh Avenue.

W: Well, you can take a bus to the city. Just go out of the front door of the terminal and cross the street. There is a sign that says, "Airport —City Bus." Otherwise, you can take a taxi. You can catch one right in front of the terminal.

M: Thank you. Oh, do you know how much the bus fare is?

W: It's five dollars. A taxi costs about fifteen to twenty dollars.

M: I'd better take a bus then. How often does the bus run?

W: I think you just missed one. There is a schedule printed on the sign outside. I think that the buses ran every half hour or so.

M: On second thought, I'd better take a taxi. I have a lot of luggage and it's late. Thank you!

Conversation 6

W: Yes, Sir. You called?

M: Yes, I wonder if you could bring me another bottle of beer.

W: Certainly. Would you like anything else?

M: Well, my grandson is supposed to meet me in London at the airport. Do you think he'll be able to find me?

W: I'm sure he will. You don't have to worry about that. Are you going to be visiting him?

M: Yes. I've never seen my grandson.

W: I think you'll have a wonderful time in London. It's beautiful, is this your first time abroad?

M: No, I saw quite a bit of Europe before, Rome, Berlin, Paris, places like that, but I've never been to London.

W: Oh, then you have flown before too.

M: No, that was during the Second World War and I went to Europe on a large ship carrying soldiers.

W: Things are quite different in Europe nowadays.

M: I'm sure they are.  I'm really interested to get there.

W: Well, it's 4 ' 00 now and we'll be there at 6:00 . Will you be sta??ying long?

M: I plan to stay five weeks. I was a teacher but I have stopped work??ing. My wife has been dead and so I can go wherever I want.

W: I think you'll have a good time. I'll go and get a beer for you.

Conversation 7

An inspector had received a phone call from an informer. The man said that a gang intended to rob the main post office. The robbery was going to take place at two o’clock on market day. The informer said that one of the gang would have a gun. This worried the Inspector most of all. There was danger that someone might be killed.

The Inspector ordered his men to wear ordinary clothes so that some of them could mix with the people in the post office. Others were to be in the street outside to prevent the gang from escaping.

On the day that the robbery was to take place, all was ready. At two o’clock, a large black car was parked in front of the post office. Three men, with handkerchiefs over their faces, jumped out and ran into the post office. Two of them stayed by the door. The third went up to the counter and pulled out the gun. No sooner had he done this than the Inspector blew his whistle. The man standing at the counter immediately put the gun back in his pocket and pulled the handkerchief from his face. “Could I have a five-penny stamp, please?” he said. “You will have to tell a better story than that to the Judge,” the Inspector said. “And anyway, there is no parking in front of the post office.”

In this voyage I visited my new colony on the island, saw the Spaniards(西班牙人), had the whole story of their lives and of the villains(罪犯) I left there; how at first they treated the poor Spaniards badly,·how they afterwards agreed, disagreed, unired, separated, and how at last the Spaniards were forced to use violence with them; how they gave in to the spaniards, how honestly the Spaniards used them ---- a history, if it were entered into, as full of variety and wonderful accidents as my own part ---- particularly, also, as to their battles with the Caribbeans, who landed several times upon the Island, and as to the improvement they made upon the Island itself, and how five of them made an attempt upon the main land, and brought away eleven men and five women prisoners, by which, at my coming, I found about twenty young children on the Island.
Here I stayed bout 20 days, left them supplies of all necessary things, and particularly of arms, powder, shot, cloths, tools, and two workmen, which I brought from England with me, namely a carpenter and a smith.
Besides this, I shared the Island into parts with them, reserved to myself the property of whole  but gave them such parts resoeetively as they agreed on; and having settled all things with them and encouraged them not to leave the place, I left them there.
From then on I landed the Brazils, from where I sent a bark, which I bought there, with more people to the island; and in it, besides other supplies, I sent seven women, being such persons as I found proper for service, or for wives to such as would take them. As to the Englishmen, I promised them to send them some women from England, with a good cargo(船货) of necessaries, if they would apply themselves to planting ---- which I afterwards could not perform. And the fellows proved very honest and diligent after they were mastered and had their properties set apart for them. I sent them also from the Brazils five cows, three of them being big with calf, some sheep, and some pigs, which when I came again were considerably increased.
But all these things, with an account how 300 Caribbeans came and invaded(入侵) them, and ruined their plantations, and how they fought with that whole number twice, and were at first defeated, and one of them killed; but at last a storm destroying most of their enemies’ boats, they destroyed almost all the rest, and renewed and recovered the possession of their plantation, and still lived upon the Island.
All these things, with some very surprising incidents in some new adventures of my own,  for ten years more, I may perhaps give a further account of the story.
