I think that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most 36 thing we ever give to each other is our attention (注意力). Especially if it’s 37  from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do 38  but receive them. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times  39   about it is even more important than understanding it.
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often 40     to tell her that they once had something just 41  that happened to her. Her pain became a story about 42 . So, finally she stopped 43  to most people because she just felt too lonely. When we interrupt what someone is 44  to let them know that we understand, we 45  the  focus of attention to ourselves. But if we just 46 , they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief (宽慰) of having someone just listen.
I have 47  learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. I 48  that passing a person a tissue (面巾纸) may be just another 49  to shut them down and take them out of their experience of 50 . Now I just listen. When they have 51  all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This 52  thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very 53 . I thought people listened only 54   they were too shy to speak or did not know the 55 . A loving silence often has far more power to heal than words.

I was eight when my neighbors got a TV. It was small and expensive, but that didn’t matter. IT WAS WONDERFUL. Everyone in the building came up to the fifth floor to see this latest wonder of the modern world. That was in 1948.
Soon, a lot of people got a TV, but not us. My parents didn’t think it was good for children. Being a good son, I didn’t argue with them. But I secretly watch TV—at my friends’ homes.
By 1955, televisions weren’t so expensive and were much larger. My parents still thought they were not good for us, but my sisters insisted, saying they were the only people in the neighborhood who didn’t have one. All their friends talked about certain programs and actors, but they couldn’t. Their friends laughed at them, which made them feel very unhappy. My youngest sister cried, saying she was never going back to school and that life without a TV wasn’t worth living. Nothing my parents said made her feel better. The next morning, without telling us, they went out and got a new TV.
When we were young our parents allowed us to watch TV for two hours a night. And we couldn’t watch until our homework was finished. But after a year or two, TV wasn’t exciting or new anymore. It became just another part of our lives like shoes or soap. My parents still had fears about TV. We were going to forget how to read, and TV was going to fill our minds with violence, they said.
Today people still argue about the value of TV. Nobody can deny the power of TV, which has a powerful influence on our lives. On average, Americans spend 30 hours a week watching TV. Is this influence good or bad? This is an unanswerable question indeed: It is hard enough to measure influence; and it is even harder to decide what is good and what isn’t. What is good, I suppose, is that many people are concerned about TV’s influence and that we have the power to change what we don’t like.
The people of Monhegan Island, 18 kilometers away off the coast of Maine, don’t have electricity, and they decided; once again, that they liked that way. Electricity, they think, would make life too easy and spoil their way of life. Maybe the young people wouldn’t want to go to town dances anymore. Maybe they would be more interested in staying at home and watching TV.

Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test---unless the person cheats again.
People lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and may be at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating, even when there seems to be a good reason for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before the day and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with you parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions(解决办法) together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
小题1:The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, ______.
A it is unfair to other people.         B it does harm to their health.
C teachers should punish them.     D teachers shouldn’t stop them at once.
小题2:Some students like cheating mainly because______.

小题3:The fourth paragraph mainly tells us______.
A some kids can’t pass the test without cheating   B why kids cheat in the test.
C. cheating isn’t a good idea. D some kids don’t spend the time studying.
小题4:We can learn from the passage _______.
A cheaters are often thought highly of
B people show no respect for those who cheat.
C parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble.
D kids cheat in the test because of swim practice.

It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear  36 that you are trying new things. It’s always   37  to try new things because when you are trying new things you are   38 .If you never try anything new, how can you   39 ? The simple answer is “You can’t”.With few exceptions, every single detail of development is the   40 of someone trying something new.
When you are making mistakes, you are  41  .Edison failed 10,000 times before he   42  the light bulb. When asked how it felt to  43  that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t  44
Finally, when you make a mistake you are much   45  to success. Why ?
When all is done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeed.  46  you make a mistake you eliminate (排除) one of those things and are one step closer.
But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead   47  considering the consequences of a mistake.Quite the contrary, when you try something new, you   48   be willing to set some reasonable limits, so that in the event that it doesn’t   49  the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again.
We all have   50  resources in time and money, so don’t blow them all on one   51  to a problem.Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time, and allocate (分配)  these resources properly so you can learn,   52   corrections, and try it again.Only by  53    and using your mistakes in this way, can you make significant  54   in your business or career
As an old saying goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”

It is said that usually people learn from their experiences and the mistakes they make throughout their lives. This is correct because life teaches us what is correct to do and what is not.
Let’s consider a mistake that one has made while trying to learn to drive. It is true that, for a beginner, it is common to make mistakes, but after doing something wrong once, twice or three times, it is quite impossible to make the same mistake a fourth time. Everyone tries their best in order to improve their skills and they will be very pleased to notice that these improvements really happen.
On the other hand, being successful in everything he does, one cannot know what failure means. He would always see only the best side of things and it would be difficult for him to face the difficulties to come in the future. Here we can mention the case of a very successful football player, who has known what fame (名声) is from the very beginning of his career. We have to admit that most of his luck originates from the great talent that he was born with. But some fellow players can also work to achieve the same thing because they make mistakes in their games and they learn from each mistake that they make.
In the end, we can say that one needs to make mistakes in life in order to better appreciate things. And at the same time, mistakes teach us how important it is to fight for something we wish for in life. Of course, moments of happiness will come in return when we see the changes or improvements.
小题1:The author mentions learning driving in the second paragraph to ______________.
A.make a comparison
B.explain that learning is a slow process
C.show that driving is a very difficult skill
D.prove that success results from failure
小题2:What is the author’s attitude towards someone that is always successful at something?
A.He thinks they are lucky.B.He is bored with them.
C.He wants to learn from them.D.He believes their success is a bad thing.
小题3:Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?
A.B.C.D.

I was sitting in the room reading when I heard a loud noise. To defend my home from break-in, I picked up my defense weapon--- a broom and went out. There on the roof of my porch(门廊), I saw a grey fluffy squirrel. I drove her away with the broom, but the next day I heard her again.
I searched squirrels on the net and found because their teeth keep growing, they have to constantly chew on things to shorten their teeth. This was disturbing so I asked my husband to call in some wildlife control people.
On Monday morning two men showed up, with guns in their hands. I pointed uneasily to the hole in my porch roof. They held up their guns. Suddenly I saw in my mind the baby nursery inside. I stopped them and confirmed that they wouldn’t harm her. They hesitated, but finally put down their guns. Then they brought out a bottle of deodorizer(除臭剂)and sprayed it into the squirrel’s home. They told me she would not like the smell and would leave.
There was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel, so they blocked the hole, took my cheque for $250 and left. Shortly after they left, Mrs. Squirrel returned from her shopping trip. She was mad at being driven out and began feverishly clawing at the porch roof. In order to stop the destruction of my home, I drove her away with the broom again.
Each day thereafter, Mrs. Squirrel continued her attack on my possession. I then called the company to report that “SHE’S BAAAAAACK…” The receptionist said that if Mrs. Squirrel had managed to find another way into my porch roof, it would be a new charge. I replied I couldn’t continue contributing my husband’s hard-earned income to their silly wildlife experts and hang up.
I went to the porch and banged on the roof. Mrs. Squirrel came out and glared at me. We negotiated some terms, came to an agreeable arrangement and went back into our respective homes.
All is quiet these days, although large quantities of materials have been removed from my garage wall and my daughter claims that some of her doll-house furniture has disappeared. I still hope that Mrs. Squirrel would leave, but I will wait until it is warmer and hopefully until after the birth of the little ones.
小题1:What did the author think of the squirrel at first?

小题2:Why didn’t the author ask the wildlife control people to come again?
A.She worried about the safety of the squirrel.
B.She thought the company charged too much.
C.She decided to drive away the squirrel herself.

小题3:What can we learn from the passage?
A.Getting rid of the squirrel needs patience.
B.The squirrel has destroyed the author’s house.
C.The author has developed affection for the squirrel.
D.The author singed an agreement with Mrs. Squirrel.
小题4:The author has written the passage in a (an) ________ way.

John and Bobby joined a wholesale company together just after graduation from college the same year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss promoted (提升) Bobby to the position of manager but John remained an ordinary worker. John couldn't understand it anymore, gave his resignation(辞呈) to the boss and complained that the boss didn't value hardworking workers, but only promoted those who flattered (奉承)him.
The boss knew John worked very hard for the years. He thought for a moment and said, "Thank you for your criticism(批评), but I have a request. I hope you'll do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you'll change your mind and take back your resignation."
John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon on the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to tell the boss$1.2 per kg.
Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone selling watermelon on the market. Bobby went, returned and said,"Boss, only one person selling watermelon. $1.2 per kg, and $ 10 for 10 kg. He has 340 melons in all, 58 of which are on the table. Every melon weights about 2kg. Bought from the South two days ago, they're fresh and red, good quality."
John was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby.

I never thought I would have a life-changing experience at Wal-Mart.
Although my thoughts were only on speed, the checkout line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier. There stood a man in his seventies, wearing glasses and a nice smile. I thought, well, he’s an old guy!
For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before scanning the items. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and engage them in brief conversation.
I thought it was odd (古怪的). I have grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of robotic conversational habit. After a while, you don’t give any thought to the question and just say something back. I could say, “I just found out I have six months to live,” and someone would reply, “Have a great day!”
But that wasn’t the end. He gave them the change, walked around the counter, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. He looked the customers in the eyes. “I sure want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.”
The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless. There were smiles and some sheepish grins (咧嘴一笑). All had been touched by his simple gesture—and in a place they never expected. They would gather their things and walk out, smiling.
Of course, he did the same to me and I got to know his name, Marty.
