    18．Surrounded by rolling green hills decorated with horses and cows，the town of Waimea on Hawaii's Big Island is a peaceful and friendly place．One afternoon，while staying with friends at their house there，my husband and I decided to go for a walk along the many，mostly traffic-free，country lanes in the area．
    We met a beautiful Golden Retriever．He seemed very friendly so we stopped to play with him，throwing a stick which he retrieved（取回）several times happily．When we continued our walk，he followed us，and although I worried that he might be going too far from his home，I couldn't deny that we were enjoying his company．
    After about twenty minutes，we found ourselves walking along a dirt road in an unfamiliar area．One house，almost hidden by the bush and shaded by tall trees，seemed somehow strange．I felt an urge to be as far away from that place as possible．
    Just then，the door to the house opened and five dogs rushed out，barking and howling as they ran toward us．I felt afraid  and couldn't move．There was nowhere to hide and no time to run．
    All of a sudden，our new friend appeared between the dogs and us．He faced them-all five of them-howling and baring his teeth．I was amazed to see the attacking dogs stop in their tracks ten feet away from him．Our protector held them there while we escaped．At a safe distance，we looked back and saw the five dogs heading back toward their house．
    But the Golden Retriever was nowhere in sight．
    I felt an ache in my heart； I missed our friend already．But I knew he was not hurt．
    With a feeling of emptiness，we made our way back to the house，hoping the whole way that we would see him again．But it was not to be．
    When I told our friend about the story，her eyes flew wide open as she shouted，"It was an angel!"

    Keep your dog warm．．The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house．Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet．At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets．This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast．
    Increase the fluid（流质）intake as it helps a lot．Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth （肉汤）in water which will give your dog strength．Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections（呼吸道感染）．
    Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold．It makes the nasal（鼻的） passage wet，which helps proper breathing．Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15minutes．Do it nearly 2to 3times a day and you will see your dog recovering．
    These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold．However，if you are not able to find any improvement in its health，then turn to the vet for help immediately．Take your dog for regular checkups so as to avoid complications（并发症）．

    For years，educators have thought the strongest predictor of attaining high levels of education was having parents who were highly educated．But，the study showed that the difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as the difference between having parents who are barely literate （有文化的） and having parents who have a university education．
    Being a sociologist，Evans was particularly interested to find that children of lesser-educated parents benefit the most from having books in the home．What kinds of investments should we make to help these kids get ahead？The results of this study indicate that getting some books into their homes is an inexpensive way that we can help these children succeed．Evans said，"Even a little bit goes a long way．Having as few as 20books in the home still has a significant impact on   motivating a child to a higher level of education，and the more books you add，the greater benefit the children get．"
    The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children's educational attainment even above and beyond such factors as education level of the parents，the father's occupation or the economic level of the country．
    Having books in the home is twice as important as the father's education level，and more important than whether a child was brought up in a developing country or a developed country．Surprisingly，the difference in educational attainment for children born in developed country and children born in developing country was just 2years，less than two-thirds of the effect that having 500or more books in the home had on children．
