14.Some years ago industries had more freedom than they now,and they did not need to be as careful as they must today.They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed.They took little notice of the health and safety of the people who worked for them.Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them and conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course,sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed the need for changes.Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore.At such times,there were inquiries into the causes of the disasters or the problems.New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries; however,the new rules came too late to protect the people who died or who became seriously ill.
Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers.In the U.S,for example,there is a department which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems.It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow.Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell.A third department looks at the places where people work,and then reports any companies that are breaking the laws which protect the health and safety of workers.Of course,new government departments and new laws cannot prevent every accident or illness,but they are having some good results.Our work places are safer and cleaner than before.The planes and cars which we use for travel are better.Producers are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

56.What had bad effects on the health of the workers?(No more than 6words)The conditions in the work place./The working conditions.
57.In what ways do the departments protect customers and workers?(No more than 20words)By testing new products, controlling foods and drugs and examining work places
58.Please explain the underlined phrase"took little notice of"in the first paragraph in English.(No more than 5words)paid little attention to/ignored.
59.What is the passage mainly about?(No more than 15words)The changes of safety and health of workers and customers
60.Do you think working or living place is safer and cleaner than before?Please give one or two examples.(No more than 20words)Yes,the river around us is cleaner than before; the traffic is safer..

56.The conditions in the work place./The working conditions. 根据第一段的最后一行"the conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers"可知,工厂的工作环境对工人有害.故填The conditions in the work place./The working conditions.
57.By testing new products, controlling foods and drugs and examining work places. By testing new products, controlling foods and drugs and examining work places.
58.paid little attention to/ignored. 根据第一段"…They took little notice of the health and safety of the people who worked for them."k可知,企业很少关注工人的健康和安全,划线部分pay little attention to同义.故填paid little attention to/ignored.
59.The changes of safety and health of workers and customers. The changes of safety and health of workers and customers.
60.Yes,the river around us is cleaner than before; the traffic is safer. Yes,the river around us is cleaner than before; the traffic is safer.

4.Thanks largely to the Kepler space telescope,astronomers have discovered more than 2,000 planets in the universe.Kepler's final goal is to find worlds similar to Earth-places where there's a chance that alien life might exist.
But the search for life will still not be easy.It will be important to choose the best possible targets.That's the reasoning behind two new rating systems (评估体系)proposed by Washington State University environmental scientist Dirk Schulze-Makuch,along with nine other colleagues.
The first rating system is called the Earth Similarity Index,or ESI.That's just what it sounds like:it's a measure of how closely an alien world matches Earth in terms of size and temperature.The temperature is important because liquid water is an important part for life.
The size of the planet seems important too.If a planet is too small,like Mars,it might not have enough gravity (引力) to hold on to its atmosphere.If the planet is too big,gravity might have pulled in too much atmosphere,which would create too much pressure at the surface.A world four or five times as large as Earth might be able to support life.But anything bigger than that could cause problems.
This second system is called the Planetary Habitability Index,or PHI.It includes planets that have a solid surface of some kind,protected by an atmosphere of some kind.Other things necessary under the PHI system are some sort of energy source(sunlight);some sort of chemical environment that allows the formation of complex molecules(分子); and the presence of liquid-but not necessarily water.
The search will get easier as technology improves.Still,these new ways of looking for alien life give us our best chance of learning if somewhere out we have galactic (银河的)relatives.

A.Because the Mars is too hot to keep the water.
B.Because the sun is far away from the Mars.
C.Because the Mars can't keep the atmosphere.
D.Because there is not any other energy in Mars.

2.Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there,as mental health professionals,to offer"psychological first aid"and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter,we were greeted with a burst of gratitude  from the first person we met.I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn't really done anything yet.
I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend's mother passed away unexpectedly.I had received a call saying she had just passed away.I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn't want to intrude(打扰)on this very personal period of sadness.I was torn about what to do.Another friend with me then said,"Just go.Just be there."I did,and I will never regret it.
Since then,I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others.Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others'presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive.
