    2．We usually believe what our brain tells us，but there is some amazing evidence which shows that the brain tricks us．As a result，we can ignore things that actually are there．Psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris have researched this phenomenon，which they call'change blindness'．
    The′Invisible Gorilla（看不见的大猩猩）experiment is probably their most famous one，and it is described in many psychology textbooks．In this experiment，the participants were shown a video of two groups of people （one group in white T-shirts and the other group in black T shirts）who passed basketballs around in a hall．Simons and Chabris asked people to count how many times the white team passed the ball．While the two teams were passing their balls around，a person who was dressed up as a gorilla walked through the group and stopped to look at the camera．Simons and Chabris found that about half of the research participants did not notice the gorilla．
    Simons and Daniel Levin did another experiment，called the'Door Study'．Participants in this study were walking across a university campus（校园）when they were stopped by someone they didn't know．The stranger asked for directions and the participant started to give the directions．While the participant was talking to the stranger，two men who were carrying a wooden door talked between the participant and the stranger．At this point，the stranger swapped places with one of the men carrying the door．After that，the participant continued to give the directions．Once again，about half of those tested did not notice that，when the door as passing by，the stranger had changed places with a man who as taller，thinner and who sounded different．
    It just goes to show how we can't always trust our own rains．Even though we may think we know what is going on，we can be blind to large changes in our environment．

    When my grandmother had children of her own-my mother and her two brothers-she emphasized education for all of them．My mother attended the University of Pennsylvania，When she graduated in 1965with a degree in French literature，she surveyed a workforce that she believed consisted of two career options for women：teaching or nursing．She chose teaching．She began a Ph．D．programme，got married，and then dropped out when she became pregnant with me．It was thought to be a sign of weakness if a husband needed his wife's help to support their family，so my mother became a stay-at-home parent and an active volunteer．The centuries-old division of labour stood．
    Even though I grew up in a traditional home，my parents had the same expectations for me．my sister，and my brother．All three of us were encouraged to do well in school．do equal routine tasks，and participate in after-school activities．We were all supposed to be athletic too．My brother and sister joined sports teams，but I was the kid who got picked last in gym，Despite my athletic shortcomings．I was raised to believe that girls could do aoything boys could do and that all career paths were open to me．
    When I arrived at college in the fall of 1987．my classmates of both genders seemed equally focused on academics．I don't remember thinking about my future career differently from the male students．I also don't  remember any conversations about someday balancing work and children．My friends and I assumed that we would have both．Men and women competed openly and aggressively with one another in classes，activities，and job intefviews．Just two generations removed from my grandmother，the playing field seemed to be level．
