The coyote (丛林狼), that clever animal of wide-open spaces, has come to the nation's capital. In fact, coyotes have spread to every corner of the United States, changing their behaviors to fit new environments and causing researchers to deal with a troublesome new kind of creature: the city coyote.

The coyote originally lived in the middle of the continent. One of its most obvious characters is its smartness, which has made the animal a notorious (臭名昭著的) pest. Hunters trapped, shot and poisoned more than a million coyotes in the 1900s. It's still one of America's most hunted animals. Yet the coyote has survived. How has the coyote shown this extraordinary ability? “I guess if you wanted to use one word, it'd be 'plasticity', ”says Eric Gese, an expert at Utah State University. Coyotes can live alone, in pairs, or in large packs like wolves; hunt at night or during the day, occupy a small region or an area up to 40 square miles; and live on all sorts of food, from lizards (蜥蜴) and shoes,to ants and melons.

Unbelievably people helped coyotes increase when they killed most of the wolves in the United States. The spreading of coyotes into city areas, though, is recent. They travel at night, crossing sidewalks and bridges, running along roads and ducking into culverts(钻入涵洞) and underpasses. No one knows why coyotes are moving into cities, but experts explain that cleverer, more humantolerant (不怕人的) coyotes are teaching urban survival skills to new generations.

Occasionally, coyotes might attack human beings. There have been about 160 attacks on people in recent years. Therefore, people have been consistently told not to feed coyotes or leave pet food unsecured. That, plus a large trapping program in the neighborhood, has cut down on the coyote population.

(1) The underlined word “plasticity” in Paragraph 2 refers to________.

[ ]

A.the ability to fit the environment

[ ]

A.tell people how to fight against coyotes

B.tell us why the coyote is the most hunted animal

C.supply the reason why the coyote is a kind of notorious pest

D.explain how the coyote has spread to and survived in cities

[ ]

A.originally lived in the west of the continent

B.sleep during the day but look for food at night

C.are teaching survival skills to their younger generations

D.suffered a population decrease because people killed wolves

(4) According to the passage, to cut down on the coyote population, people are advised to________.

[ ]

A.leave pet food secured

B.keep coyotes in small regions

C.force coyotes to live alone

D.avoid using trapping programs

答案:A;D;C;A

(2) 综观全文,ABC三项分别说明了丛林狼的一个方面。而整篇文章是说明了丛林狼如何进入到城市中并且在城市中生存下来了。

When it comes to intelligence, human beings are the top dogs of the animal kingdom. But in recent years, scientists have been documenting surprising intelligence and emotional depth in animals ranging from honeybees to elephants. Here are some amazing examples.

  Artistic Monkey Business

Jannet Schmid, director of the Little River Zoo in Norman, Oklahoma, learned a lot about the intelligence of capuchin monkeys. She and her husband adopted a young male, named Bailey. The capuchin particularly liked taking car rides, insisting that he insert the key and ride in the front passenger’s seat.

Now Bailey has become a devoted painter. He uses brushes to create colorful, abstract paintings, and prefers not to be disturbed.

  Prairie Dog Sound

Through a variety of birdlike sounds, prairie dogs warn each other of approaching creatures. They demonstrated a surprisingly complex communication system. In his 25 years of study, Slobodchikoff, a professor of biology, has recorded them pronouncing ten nouns including hawk, deer and coyote, a number of adjectives to identify color, size and shape, and even some verbs to indicate speed.

In an ongoing study, Slobodchikoff learns that their brain contains a very extensive vocabulary. He once used his best prairie dog sound to say coyote, and they just looked at him in anger as if he had said a bad word.

  Ivy League Parrot

One African grey parrot Alex is said to have the cognitive abilities of a five-year-old child.Alex can identify 50 different objects, seven colors, five shapes, quantities up to six, and the concepts of bigger, smaller, same and different.

Also Alex is considered to make reasoned decisions.During an experiment, researchers gave Alex different-colored blocks in sets of two, three and six. When asked which color group had five blocks, Alex replied,“None.”And he answered the same in repeated tests.Obviously, he interpreted the concept of“none”as an absence of quantity all on his own. That’s a lot like a high school student answering questions on a quiz show.

(1)

Which of the following is true?

[ ]

A.

Bailey is as clever as a child of five.

B.

The prairie dog loves taking car rides.

C.

The capuchin monkey is fond of painting.

[ ]

A.

B.

C.

D.

an adjective

(3)

[ ]

A.

answer questions on a quiz show

B.

understand the figure“7”

C.

identify five colors and seven shapes

D.

apply the concept of“none”correctly

(4)

阅读理解

There was room for all of us, and the sleeping bags kept the night coldness away.We would listen to the sound of the river, and hear the coyotes(土狼)howling along the hills not far away.

Those were the cool summer nights of the mid-nineties in Southern Alberta, Canada, when the four children were young and we would lie on the trampoline(蹦床)in the backyard late at night, for the sun would not set till late in July and August. We would look at the stars up above and never grow tired of it.

These were the times when I would tell the stories of my own childhood and teach the kids life’s lessons that have been remembered to this day.I chuckle(轻声地笑), as I recall the time when we heard a coyote not far away, and then I started a story about a bear approaching the trampoline. The bear came close(in the story), and the kids snuggled up to mom and me, until suddenly I’d let out a howl and grab all the kids and they would be frightened and jump up and then all laugh,“Daddy, you scared us!”

Now the children are in their mid and late teens, but they fondly remember the starry nights on that trampoline.Recently my oldest daughter on her wedding day sang a song for her parents, entitled“I’ll always be your little girl”.She wrote the music and words and yes indeed:it included a memory of those starry nights.

I have learned as a parent that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children as they are growing up is the time to tell them stories, or if telling stories is not that simple, perhaps read them a story. They can read their own books, but telling or reading them a story will create a close relationship with pleasant memories such as those late summer nights under the starry sky.

(1)

The passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.

coyotes’ effects on children

B.

the relationship between children

C.

the author’s unforgettable experiences

D.

the author’s memories of starry nights

(2)

The underlined part“snuggled up”probably means ________.

[ ]

A.

lay down

B.

got close

C.

gave in

D.

struggled forward

(3)

How do the children feel about their childhood?

[ ]

A.

Very enjoyable.

B.

A bit regretful.

C.

Rather busy.

D.

Sort of dull.

(4)

In the last paragraph, the writer mainly wants to express ________.

[ ]

A.

it is easy to tell stories to children

B.

kids should read stories themselves

C.

it is important to tell or read stories to kids

D.

it’s necessary to spend summer nights with kids
