4．Foldable walking sticks help the visually impaired and blind people find out their surroundings and guide their way．But the guide stick only offers very limited information．The users still have to find and avoid obstacles by themselves．The good news is that new high-tech sticks are on the horizon．
Last year researchers in India tried to make the walking stick smarter．They did some experiments to improve the tradition stick and they gave it a new name-Smart Cane（手杖）．The device uses an attached receiver and a sensor that gives out a loud sound to warn its users when an obstacle is within three meters．It gave off flashes of red light and heated the handle by its original design．But researchers soon realized that the red light was of little use and the heating system couldn't function well in summer days．
Some are taking a bigger challenge．Students at the Birmingham City University are developing a cane that can even identify people as they approach．Called the XploR cane，it includes a tiny digital camera that analyzes the faces of people walking by and compares their images against a database stored on a memory card in the cane's handle．
If there's a facial recognition match，the cane sends a message to the user's smart phone via Bluetooth．The phone then identifies the approaching person to the user via its speaker or earphones．The students are building a sample and they'll test later this year．
The difficulties they have met are obvious：facial recognition is a tough problem，especially outdoors．But if the XploR works，it could actually provide the visually impaired and the blind with much convenience-especially those who hardly remember people's names．

Though several other countries celebrate this day in honor of their own veterans，the meaning is slightly different for each one．Some like the United Kingdom，celebrate it in honorof all soldiers-living or dead，while others like Canada celebrate it to honor all living veterans．They also call it different names．France and New Zealand silll call it Armistice Day．In the United Kingdom，Australia and Canada it is referred to as Remembrance Day，while Malta and South Africa celebrate it as Poppy Day．
