    12．Oxford English Language Center
    Information for New StudentsCLASS TIME：8：30a．m．-10：00a．m．，10：30a．m．-12：00a．m．，1：30p．m．-3：00p．m．．
    The Language Center is open Monday to Friday．Each class has one afternoon free per week．On the first day，go to the lecture hall to check your timetable．
    SELF-ACCESS：The language laboratory（Room 1110）is open Monday to Friday from 3：15p．m．to 5：00p．m．for all full-time students．
    You can learn how to use computers for language games or word-processing．There are tapes for students to borrow to practice their English．Go in and ask the teacher to show you．If you plan to take public examinations，there are dictation and listening comprehension tapes for you to practice with．There are cloze exercises on the computers．Ask your class teacher for a list of past exam essays．Students can borrow tapes to take home but they must be returned after two days．
    ATTENDANCE：All students are expected to attend classes as it is required．Students who do not attend classes will be reported to OSS．Eighty percent attendance is required for students to receive their certificates when they finish their courses．It is also required by OSS for an extension to your visa．
    BOOKS：If students are given course books，the books are their responsibility．If a book is lost，the student will be expected to pay for it．If students wish to buy books，there is a bookshop in the college specializing in English books（Room 3520．

    I nodded at her to show I understood what she was saying．Signaling to us to follow her，she turned to walk along a small path that I had never noticed．At the end of the small path，there was a small village．Tears of joy filled my eyes．

    Researchers are looking at the possibility of identifying"athletic"genes and correcting weak ones．Put into practice，this would make a person healthier and stronger．Once scientists understand what genes of top athletes look like，it might even become possible to identify"athletic"genes in young people，and then money could be spent on children who have the most promising genes．
    "People are beginning to recognize that genetics can in many ways do good to our society，for example in saving lives and in creating better quality food for people．"Dr Farnood says．"So，is it fair to use genetic engineering in sport？You could ask if it's fair for some runners to use the latest scientifically developed footwear．The key question is whether it's available to everyone．"

    17．Rainforests，it turns out，are not created equal．Take the Amazon rainforest，an area that covers about 7million square kilometers．But within that huge expanse are all kinds of ecological zones，and some of these zones，says Greg Asner，are a lot more crowded than others．
    "Some forests have many species of trees，"he said，"others have few．Many forests are unique from others in terms of their overall species composition…"And all of these different small areas of forest exist within the giant space that is the Amazon Rainforest．
    So Asner，using the signature technique called airborne laser-guided imaging spectroscopy，began to map these different zones from the air．"By mapping the traits of tropical forests from above，"he explains，"we are，for the first time，able to understand how forest composition varies geographically．"
    The results show up in multicolored maps，with each color representing different kinds of species，different kinds of trees，the different kinds of chemical they are producing and using，and even the amount of biodiversity，the animal and plant species that live within each zone．
    Armed with this information，Asner says decision-makers now have"a first-time way to decide whether any given forest geography is protected well enough or not．If not，then new protections can be put in place to save a given forest from destruction．"
    Asner says the information is a great way for decision-makers to develop a"cost-benefit ratio type analysis．"Conservation efforts can be expensive，so armed with this information，government leaders can ensure they are making the most of their conservation dollars by focusing on areas that are the most biologically diverse or unique．
    The next step，Asner says，is to take his project global，and to put his eyes even higher in the sky，on orbital satellites．"The technique we developed and applied to map Peru is ready to go global．"Asner said．"We want to put the required instrumentation on an Earth-orbiting satellite，to map the planet every month，which will give the best possible view of how the world's biodiversity is changing，and where to put much needed protections．
