         Hosting the Olympics successfully is, perhaps, the greatest glory for a city. However, before turning the
    dream into reality, the benefits and drawbacks of hosting the Olympics should be considered carefully.
         Hosting the Olympics surely would bring about much gain to a city. Boom (繁荣) of the local economy,
    more jobs, and the possibrlity ofmore income all sound very attractive to the govemment. At the same time,
    better infrastructure (基础设施), cleaner environment, enjoying the wonderful game with hundreds of sports
    elites (精英)and entertainment stars, and the chance of contacting people from all over the world also seem
    exciting to the citizens. Besides, the hosting will certainly promote the patriotic (爱国的) emotion and pride,
    as well as the moral behavior in local people. In most cases, hosting the Olympics is well supported by both
    the pubiic and the central government.
         But this is not the entire view of the pretty picture. If we look from another angle, the Olympic hosting
    might bring about some side-effects to a city.
         First, the environmental impacts, including the increasing exhaust (排气) smoke of cars, more pressure
    on water resources, huge amount of wasted leaflets and other materials used for public activities, are most
    probably neglected. In order to broaden the streets, some trees may have to be cut. Near the construction
    site, the tiny dust may float in the air for a long time. Reduction of farmland may be caused by the need of
    setting up new sports centre or accommodation facilities. These environmental consequences (后果) can be
    especially serious in a resource-limited and thickly-populated city in a third-world country. Second, if we talk
    about the economic benefit, it should not be forgotten that a quick increase may lead to bubble (泡沫) growth,
    which may easily crash. If not well managed and organized, the big event may not be so profitable, and the
    new facilities may be forever empty after the games. Yes, there have been cases that host cities ended up with
    enormous debts.
         No one stops eating merely because too much food might hurt his stomach and make him ill. Since we
    have bid for it,what we can do is to make the benefits most and reduce the drawbacks least.

         At Ford, there are no plans to abandon production of big trucks. But the company is making small cars a
    priority, launching the Ford Fiesta and the C-MAX, a compact car with sliding doors and three rows of seats,
    in 2011. "We can't even think about growing our market share without having a strong pressure in the small-
    vehicle market" George Pipas, Ford's chief U.S. sales analyst says.
         Not everyone is so big on Americans going small. This seems to be evident on dealer lots (停车场). Jack
    Kain, a Ford dealer in Versailles, Ky., said the F150 truck remains his bigger seller. He predicts trucks will
    continue to outsell small cars, at least in his area "People won't give up the safety and comfort of the larger
    cars," he says.
         But Ford's Pipas is confident that many will embrace the industry's new focus. Detroit's big hopes, he
    admits, are riding on the future of small cars.

         London started its first major bike hire scheme (方案) on July 30th. Transport For London (TFL),
    the agency responsible for moving people around England's capital, put 5,000 bicycles in 400 different
    locations around the city.
         The idea is to cut traffic, reduce pollution and provide a greener way of getting around London's
    streets. The scheme had a few small problems on its first day as people could not lock the bikes properly
    once they had finished riding them. As a gesture of goodwill, London Mayor Boris Johnson announced
    all rentals (租金) on the first day would be free of charge. The bikes are available for free for the first 30 minutes but costs go up sharply since then. Renters have to pay $1.60 for the first hour and $78 for 24
    hours. The bikes are clearly designed for very short trips.
         TFL says it sees a "cycle revolution" happening in London. It predicts there will be around 40,000
    new cycle journeys every day on the rental bikes. Mr. Johnson says he wants to see a return to the turn
    of the 20th century, when 20 per cent of journeys in London were made by bicycle. The scheme has
    received a lot of positive feedback (反馈) in the first two days.
         Many Londoners believe it is a great alternative (替代品) to London's overcrowded and overpriced
    trains and buses. One person, Andy Clark, told the Reuters news agency, "It's a great idea. I've seen it
    operating in Paris and Barcelona and thought why don't we have one?" The Londonist Blog said the
    bikes were very strong and were "designed to bear a beating from both careless cyclists and drunken
    people".

         Last year more than one million Filipinos worked abroad as servants, nurses, sailors and in other difficult
    but low-paid jobs. Southeast Asians leave their poorer countries for their richer neighbours.
         Many of these wage-earners return in the end. In the meantime, they send home huge amounts of money-
    in the Philippines' case, over 10% of its GDP. Between January and November, the amount was up 18% on
    the same period of 2005, Poverty and unemployment are still high in the Philippines and other labour-exporting
    (劳务输出) countries. They would be far worse but for this outflow of bodies and inflow of dollars. As for
    those Asian countries that import (输入) labour, as in Europe, falling birth rates mean they are going to need
    more foreign workers.
         On January 13th leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed an agreement to
    help migrant (流动的) workers-with the realization that the flow of labour between their countries is a growing
    problem that they cannot blame on outsiders. A 2005 study showed that 8.4 million Southeast Asians worked
    outside their home countries, but this did not include the huge numbers of Indonesians doing so without papers.
    So the true total is probably rather higher.
         Of the ten ASEAN countries, the Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos export
    labour, Singapore and Brunei import it, and Thailand and Malaysia do both. Sziraczki of the UN's International
    Labour Organization points out that, in the next ten years, the total labour force of the worker exporting
    countries should grow by about a third. It makes sense to work on the problem before it gets out of control.
         People in the receiving countries seem to be worried about competition for their jobs. Most Thais said their
    government should admit (准入) no more foreign workers, and a few thought otherwise. Even in Singapore,
    just over ball of people are against admitting more foreign workers. Malaysians think that the increase in foreign
    workers has worsened crime rates (犯罪率).

         "Pay has little to do with motivation in the workplace". That's the argument put forward by best-selling
    author Daniel Pink in his new book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. "Pay for
    performance is supposed to be a folk tale," he says.
         Daniel argues that, if employees receive a basic level of payment, three other factors matter more than
    money: a sense of independence, of mastery over one's labor, and of serving a purpose larger than oneself.
    For example, in 2008 at the offices of Best Buy's Richfield, salaried workers there were allowed to organize
    their own work day, putting in only as many hours as they felt necessary to get their jobs done. Productivity
    increased by 35% according to The Harvard Business Review.
         But the managers at Goldman Sachs aren't exactly making some efforts to adjust. Like others on Wall
    Street, the banking giant argues that fat bonuses (extra rewards) are essential to make its numbers. "That's
    exactly the attitude that leads to the recent financial crisis in the United States," responds Daniel, "as managers
    always focus on short-term rewards that encourage cheating, shortcuts, and dishonest behavior."
         Moreover, the 45-year-old author and former Al Gore speechwriter refers to social-science experiments
    and experiences at such workplaces as Google and 3M. In one 2005 experiment he describes, economists
    working for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston tested the power of incentives (激励) by offering cash
    rewards to those who did wellin games that included reciting a series of numbers and throwing tennis balls
    at a target. The researchers' finding: Over and over, higher incentives led to worse performance-and those
    given the highest incentives did the poorest job.
         From this and other cases, Daniel draws a conclusion that monetary incentives remove the element of
    play and creativity, transforming "an interesting task into a dull one." It's even possible, he adds, for oversized
    rewards to have dangerous side effects, like those of a drug dependency in which an addicted requires ever
    larger amounts. He refers to scientific testing that shows the promise of cash rewards increase a chemical in
    the brain similar to that brought on by cocaine or nicotine.
         Daniel, however, is also aware that his company examples-no GE, no IBM, no Microsoft-hardly represent
    the commanding heights of the economy. But he thinks his approach will catch on, even in the biggest
    companies. "Managers tend to be realistic, and in time they will respond," he says.

    Dear Mr. President:
        I would like to personally thank you for your time and concern for our great country.
    I would like to take a few minutes to address a few concerns that I have with the United
    States.
        First of all, I would like to address the war. In my opinion, we should have never
    been involved with Iraq to the extent that we are now. I believe we should pull our troops
    out. However, I think there should be a time table that we follow but the time table should
    not be released because the enemy does not need to know when we are going to pull out.
    Also, the war takes out a ton of our money, which leads me to my next issue.
        The economy right now, in the opinion of many Americans is the biggest issue with which
    we are facing right now. No one can predict what will happen one day or the next. The
    obvious thing to do is to put 700 billion dollars in the economy, but that bill failed and
    was rejected by the House of Representatives (众议院). Instead of putting 700 billion
    dollars in, I think the money should be equally distributed among Americans to pay off
    their debts. I'm not sure if this would work, but I think it is a positive alternative we
    could take.
        My final issue I would like to call to your attention is teacher's salaries. The high
    school students of today are America's future. In a way, America's future depends greatly
    on the high school teachers of America. Saying this, it is sad that teacher's salaries are
    where they are. While teachers are working harder and harder every day to teach high school
    students, CEO's of big companies that are driving our countries economy into the ground are
    getting bonuses. I'm not saying that teacher's salaries should be the same of CEO's of
    companies, but I do strongly believe that action should be taken to increase the salaries
    of teachers because they have one of the most important jobs in America-preparing our
    country for the future.
        Once again, thank you for your time and your effort you put in to making this great
    country a better place.
