In December of l 992.I was a happy husband and father of two young children.A month later,I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia(急性白血病).
After two years of chemo(化疗)that helped control the disease,my body was weak and lifeless.I felt as if I were a puppet who needed help to lift his arms or hold up his head.
I began to run. After six months my strength had come back.On one of my runs, one where I felt I could run forever,I decided I was going to try to run a marathon.
After telling my Dad about my plan,he told me of a program that trains people to run a marathon, while raising funds for Leukemia research at the same time.So that summer, through the Leukemia Society’s Team in Training program,I started to train for the Marine Corps Marathon.During mile after mile of uncertainty, the day finally came to run the marathon.
On October 27,1996,at 8 A.M.,along with l9,000 other brave souls I started on a 26.2-mile journey that I will never forget.
I first saw my wife Patty at the six-mile mark . She seemed happy that I was still looking as if I knew what I was doing, and having a good time doing it.At Mile l7,my mind was going back to those two horrible years that tried to bring my family and me down.I saw her again. The concern in her face told me she knew I was starting to struggle.I felt as if we were thinking the same, nine more miles and these last few years will be behind us.
That thought alone pulled me forward.Mile 22,23,slowing but going,24,25,then there it was.The Iwo Jima War Memorial.I have seen nothing so grand and inspiring in my life.Three hours and forty-one minutes after I started,I crossed what I think has to be the most fitting finish line in all of road racing!
That night the Leukemia Society gave me a pin at a post-race party that simply says,“Leukemia 26.2”.
If God wills,my cancer may once again take away my hair and my strength, maybe even my life. But it can never take away my pin,or the fact that I am a marathoner .

D.Because 26.2 miles is the most reasonable distance for road racing.

My first full-time job after high school was selling vacation packages via the telephone for a well-known company. One day, I was put through to a man who sounded a bit out of breath. I started with my normal pitch (音高), expecting to hear the normal reply —"I don’t want any."
Instead, he spoke in a faint, weak voice and told me how he wished to take a vacation I was offering, but he couldn’t because he was dying of illness. He explained how he was lacking in oxygen then, and it took almost all his energy to answer the call. He asked if I smoked, which I did, and begged me to stop. He told me smoking was what was killing him. He told me to spend every day with my loved ones, and tell them how much I love them. At this point, I couldn’t control myself. We ended the call, but I held on my phone to prevent another call coming in so I could collect myself.
I wrote down his name and address, and sent him a card appreciating his advice and praying for him and his family. Shortly after, I received a letter from Frank, along with a picture of him and his wife. We continued to write back and forth over the next few months, and became very fond of each other. He was old enough to be my grandfather, and in many ways, I felt as if he was.
About a year later I received a letter from his wife. When I started to read, tears came to my eyes. She told me how Frank’s battle with the disease had finally come to an end, and he passed away shortly before the Christmas. She wanted to thank me for the letters to Frank, and explained how Frank touched many lives over the years. At his funeral, to show just that, they read the 1st letter I had written to Frank to show how he affected a 19-year-old he’d never met.
小题1: The author was then probably working for ______.
A.a travel agencyB.a cigarette company
C.an e-shopping storeD.a vacation school
小题2:The underlined part "collect myself" in the second paragraph probably means "_______".
A.gather togetherB.comfort myself

小题3: What can we infer from the text?
A.Frank was in hospital while answering the phone.
B.Frank is actually the author’s grandfather.
C.There was something wrong with Frank’s lung.
D.The author asked Frank to travel and he took his advice.
小题4: We can learn from the text that the author ________.
A.took down Frank’s name and address to visit him in person
B.was warmly welcomed by her customers when she called them
C.didn’t stop smoking even though Frank asked him to
D.kept in touch with Frank through letters until he died
小题5:At Frank’s funeral the author’s 1st letter to Frank was read in order to ____.
A.encourage people to fight against disease and live bravely
B.indicate that Frank touched many people’s hearts

D.praise Frank and give thanks to the author

Robert Ballard was born in 1942. From an early age, he loved the sea. Ballard grew up in Southern California. He spent his free time at the beach near his home. He enjoyed fishing and swimming. He even learned to dive.

When Ballard wasn’t at the ocean, he loved reading about it. At age 10, he read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a book which describes the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo. Ballard decided he wanted to be like Captain Nemo when he grew up. His parents helped him follow his dream.
Ballard was a hardworking student. He spent many years learning all he could about the ocean. By the age of 28, he was an expert. In 1970, he took a job as a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. There he studied underwater mountains of the Atlantic Ocean. He came up with ways to predict(预知)volcanoes under the oceans. Working with other scientists, Ballard also found previously(以前)unknown sea animals. These animals lived far below the ocean’s surface, where scientists had believed no animals could live.
By the 1980s, Ballard’s interests changed. He developed unmanned(无人的)vehicles to explore the ocean bottom. His first find, the well-known ship Titanic, made Ballard famous. He was not happy with just one big find, however. He looked for — and found — other well-known ships. One was the German battleship Bismarck. Another was the U.S.S. Yorktown, an aircraft carrier (航空母舰) that sank during World War II.
Today Robert Ballard is still an underwater explorer. He also heads an organization that encourages students to learn about science. How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss, or an insensitive employee      your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed      the airport. We were driving in the right lane      suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and narrowly      the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started      at us.
My taxi driver just      and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really     . So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”.
He       that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of     , full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage      up, they need a place to dump (倒) it and sometimes they’ll dump it on     . Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be more     . Don’t take their garbage and      it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets, Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with     . The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s       in your life. Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you       bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories rather easily, and you      them more frequently.
So...Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you       it!
When you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”, you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by       go of the bad. Have a Garbage Free Day!Have a marvelous, garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today      the harvest you reap tomorrow.

One of the three young men before us caught the puck and,      in one motion after catching it, threw it back to my son.
My son looked at the puck as if he had been given a golden     . "Why did that man give me the puck?"  I explained to my son that the man had given him the puck because he knew how      it would make him to have a souvenir from the game, and not just any souvenir, but the puck that had been the      goal in a shootout. It was obvious that he knew it would      more to my son than it would to him.

My dear boys,
I am dreadfully busy this year一it makes my hand more shaky than ever when I think of it一and not very rich; in fact awful things have been happening, and some of the presents have got spoilt, and I haven't got the North Polar Bear to help me, and I have had to move house just before Christmas, so you can imagine what a state everything is in, and you will see why I have a new address, and why I can only write one letter between you both.
|K] It all happened like this: one very windy day last November my hood blew off and went and stuck on the top of the North Pole. I told him not to, but the North Polar Bear climbed up to the thin top to get it down一and he did. The pole broke in the middle and fell on the roof of my house, and the North Polar Bear fell through the hole it made into the dining room with my hood over his nose, and all the snow fell off the roof into the house and melted and put out all the fires and ran down into the cellars where I was collecting this year's presents, and the North Polar
Bear's leg got broken.
He is well again now, but I was so cross with him that he says he won't try to help me again一I expect his temper is hurt, and will be mended by next Christmas.
I send you a picture of the accident and of my new house on the cliffs above the North Pole(with beautiful cellars in the cliffs).
That's all. Good Bye!
