Three Cups of Tea is a true story of our time. In 1993,a young American mountain climber named Greg Mortenson walked into a tiny village high in Pakistan's beautiful and poor Karakoram Himalaya region. Sick, exhausted, and depressed after failing to climb the summit of K2,Mortenson regained his strength and his will to live due to the generosity of the people of the village of Korphe. Before he left,he made a promise that would completely change both the villagers' lives and his own―he would return and build them a school.

1       The region was remote and dangerous as a breeding ground (滋生地) for terrorists. In the course of his work,Mortenson was taken prisoner and threatened with death. He suffered from local opposition, deep misunderstandings, jealousy, not to mention dangerous roads and extreme weather. But he believed strongly that balanced, nonextremist education, for boys and girls alike, was the most effective way to fight the violent discrimination that breeds terrorism. 2       Mortenson first approached Karakoram as a climber and he never lost the mountaineer's appreciation for the region's simple beauty and incredible physical challenges. His coauthor (合著者) David Oliver Relin skillfully described highaltitude landscapes. 3       In the course of this description, readers came to know Mortenson as a friend,a husband and father,a traveling companion,a son and brother, and also as an imperfect human being. Relin was not shy away from describing the man's annoying qualities―his impatience, disorganization and sleeplessness. 4       Pakistan and Afghanistan appeared in the news as the breeding grounds of terrorist training camps. In Three Cups of Tea,Mortenson and Relin took readers behind the headlines to reveal the true heart and soul of this region,5       .

   A. But Mortenson never asked others to make sacrifices that he had not already made himself time and time again.

   B. Today,Mortenson's Central Asia Institute had constructed fiftyfive schools, and his work continued.

   C. Greg Mortenson promised to build a school for the villagers of Korphe to show appreciation for their generosity.

   D. and to show how one man's promise might be enough to change the world

   E. The book described how Mortenson kept this promise and many more in the high country of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

   F. Greg Mortenson has devoted so much to building schools because he believes that education is the best way to fight discrimination that leads to terrorism.

   G. Gradually he transformed himself from a poor climber to a director of a helpful institute.

It says every scientist cherishes a childhood dream indicating his or her future success. But for Yuan Longping, dubbed (外号;) as " father of hybrid rice”,the dream is that he cultivates rice as plump as peanuts,1       Yuan won a 5 million yuan State Supreme Science and Technology Award today, known as the Nobel Prize in China, for his outstanding achievements in breeding highyield hybrid rice,2       Yuan came up with the idea of hybridizing rice for the first time in the world in 1960s. By lending his name to the Longping Hightech,a seed company,Yuan obtained a 5 percent stake,or 2. 5 million shares worth 2 million yuan,in the firm.

However,Yuan said his research requires the lifestyle of a farmer,or rather a migrating farmer,as he has conducted extensive research related to the cultivation of new strains of hybrid rice " Super Hybrid Rice" in some 10  provinces.

The "Super Rice" yields are 30 percent higher than those of common rice. The record yield of 17,055 kilograms per hectare was registered in Yongsheng County in Yunnan in 1999.

5          He has a dream, more realistic than that of his young age, that popularizing new strains of grain with higher yields around the world, can eliminate starvation on earth.

I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I have become a better listener than I was ten years ago,1       Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It's being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond. In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic of the way we live. 2       It's almost like our goal is to have no time gaps between the conclusion of the sentences of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafe having lunch, eavesdropping (偷听) on the conversations around us. 3       Instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face she said, "Only sometimes."Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener aids you in becoming a more peaceful person.

4       If you think about it,you'll notice that it takes an enormous amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you(or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish,as you simply listen more singlemindedly to what is being said, you'll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You'll immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. 5       Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person,it will also enhance the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.

   A. Communication begins with good listening skills.

   B. It takes pressure from you.

   C. We often treat communication as if it were a race.

   D. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another.

   E. I have to admit I'm still only an adequate listener.

   F. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won't feel in competition with you for "air time"!

   G. Everyone has different ways of listening and expressing themselves.

1.                  2.                  3.         4.          5.

Dear Mr. Seaton,Thank you very much for taking me with you on that splendid outing to London. It is the first time that I had seen the Tower or any of the other famous sight. If I'd gone alone,I could have seen nearly as much, because I shouldn't have known my way about.

The weather was splendid on that day,as I thought was rare. I still remember some people told me that in Britain there was weather and no climate. At the same day,it might snow in the morning, rain at the noon, shine in the afternoon and be windy before the night falls. So I think I was lucky.

I think the river trip was the best thing of all. London really came alive to me as we saw it from the Thames during that wonderful journey down Greenwich. It was all tremendous exciting―a day that I shall never forget.

Thank you for giving I such a great birthday treat.

Yours sincerely,Linda Chen

man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps.

A good book may be among the best of human's friends. 1       It is the most patient and cheerful companion. It does not turn its back upon us in times of hardship or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness.

Men often discover their similarity to each other by the common love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. 2       But there is more wisdom in this: "Love me,love my book. " The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author.

A good book is often the best container of a life enshrining (珍藏) the best that life could think out; for the world of a man's life is,for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which become our constant companions and comforters.

3       They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed pages.

Books introduce us into the best society. They bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; 4       we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours.

The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. 5       It is an intellect to which one still listens.

   A. we see them as if they were really alive;

   B. There is an old proverb, "Love me,love my dog."

   C. Books possess an essence of immortality.

   D. One should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.

   E. The book is a living voice.

   F. It is the same today that it always was,and it will never change.

   G. It amuses and instructs us in youth, and comforts and consoles us in age. 1.       2.      3.       4.        5.
