What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster?

Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream—as well as for developing over 75 flavors(味道).

Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No—there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.

In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12°F. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir(搅拌)it, creating ice-cream soup.”

While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself,“Does the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste!

Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy – working at one cool job.

1. What is John Harrison’s job?

A. An official. B. An ice-cream manufacturer.

C. A chemist. D. An ice-cream taster.

2.According to John Harrison, to be qualified in the “cool field”, it is helpful to ________.

A. think up new ideas every day

B. keep a diary of daily work

C. have a degree in related subjects

D. find out new flavors each day

3.What does Harrison do first when testing ice cream?

A. He stirs the ice cream.

B. He lets the ice cream warm up.

C. He tastes the flavor of the ice cream.

D. He examines the color of the ice cream.

4.Which of the following is probably the best title for the passage?

A. One Cool Job B. Flavors of Ice Cream

C. Tasting with Eyes D. John Harrison’s Life

BEIJING — China's education authority will tighten the widely criticized policy of “extra credits” for the national college entrance examination to ensure a fairer chance for all exam-takers.

Under the policy, high school students who win awards in national Olympic competitions could get ‘‘extra credits’, up to 20 points for the national college entrance exam. Students with talentin sports and students who are from ethnic groups can also benefit from this policy. The extra credits have increased these students' chances of being admitted by famous universities. Some parents were found to have helped their children fabricate(伪造)award experiences or falsify qualifications to get extra credits.

“It has harmed education equality,” the ministry said.

Xiong Bingqi, vice-chief of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said the policy is designed to help students who have special talents but may be weak in academic performance to have a chance to receive higher education. It will still be needed but it is time to make the rules fairer," he said.

The ministry said it will reduce the range of competitions whose winners can get extra credits, and limit the winners, privileges.

The new policy will apply to students who begin high school in 2011, it said.

Chen Lei, a mother of a 10-year-old girl, said she welcomed the ministry's policy adjustmentas she does not want her daughter to become an Olympic competition geek.

But not all the Chinese parents welcomed the new policy. “It is like a thunderbolt for me. My 13-year-old son has spent so much time studying Olympic math, and participated in so many technological competitions during vacations. It is useless now,” said Dong Wen, a 43-year-old mother.

A student said, “Many students have changed the current study plan, and they can abandon the competition. I will be interested in learning the courses which can improve my abilities.”

Yuan Guiren, minister of education, told China Daily that the reform is an attempt to consider the overall quality of an applicant. “But the country will not stop the national college entrance examination as it is still the most objective way to evaluate talent in China,” he said.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that_____.

A. high school students with talent in sports are weak in academic performance

B. students who win awards in Olympic competitions can't get extra credits in 2011

C. the number of competitions whose winners can be awarded extra credits will be smaller

D. he extra credits have reduced students' chances of being admitted by famous colleges

2.What does the underlined word “geek” probably mean?

A. a winner B. a smart learner

C. a competitor D. a dull student

3. Which person in the passage was strongly against the new policy?

A. Xiong Bingqi B. Chen Lei C. Dong Wen D. Yuan Guiren

4.What might be the best title for the text?

A. “Extra credits” policy in China to be adjusted

B. Promotion of national Olympic competitions

C. Advice on the national college entrance exam

D. Chinese government to push education reform

The news that China bans time-travel TV dramas and movies got a lot of attention on the Internet. Yet, time travel in China is a bit different from time travel in common sense. It is anything but science fiction and always goes backwards in time. There is minimum imagination involved--no ever-ending circles that mess up present and future, no advanced technology, no new social orders or new human forms from the twenty--whatever century, everything is a known historical fact when you travel through in China.

It is not even called time travel; rather the Chinese people refer to it as time crossover. Time crossover has been an extremely popular theme for online novels for years (in fact, it is an indispensable part of China's online culture), and didn't get picked up by TV and the big screen until recent two years. Most of time-travel dramas and movies are adapted from popular online novels and like in other cases adaptations are never better than the original books.

The main plot of time-travel novels or TV dramas can be very well summarized in one sentence: from nobody to somebody. Time travel in China is more about escaping from the reality than about realizing wild dreams.

In China, there is no need of time machine either. People travel backwards in time via the possession of antiques presence at historical places of interest encounter of life-threatening accidents or simple a look into the mirror. Some time-travel novels even start with ''I wanted togo back to history so much that one morning when I opened my eyes I was back.'' Technology is not relevant at all.

Though China is not short of histories to go back to, people have their own preferences and it is pretty much a gender thing. If the main character is male then he usually goes back to special times in history when he is able to help build up or tear up a dynasty. A typical example is A Step Into the Past (寻秦记), the first time-travel TV drama in China, which tells the story of how a SWAT member helps to unite China and build up Qin Dynasty.

On the other hand, female characters primarily go back to Qing Dynasty partly because Qing Dynasty has the most number of princes to fall in love with. YongZheng Emperor is the favorite. As can be seen in Startling by Each Step (步步惊心), a Qing time crossover classic, a girl goes back to Qing Dynasty and falls in love with YongZheng Emperor and his brothers.

1.The writing purpose of this passage is to __________.

A.Analyze why the time-travel TV dramas are banned in China

B.Show the difference between time travel in China and in other cultures

C.Introduce the characteristics of the time-travel TV dramas in China

D.Advise people to watch the time-travel TV dramas in China

2.It can be inferred from the passage that__________ .

A.China now has banned any forms of productions about time travel

B.The main character always follows a set pattern in the time-travel TV dramas in China

C.Adapted from online novels, time-travel TV and movie productions enjoy more praise

D.All the time-travel productions are about heroes and their success

3. The news mentioned in the very beginning is intended to________ .

A.prove author's view B.give an example

C.work as a topic sentence D.introduce the topic
