15.An American airline won the right to weigh its passengers over a six-month period earlier this year to learn how it could save fuel,after discovering the average passenger and carry-on luggage was heavier than expected.
Hawaiian Airlines has now cancelled pre-booked seating for people flying the 2,600-mile route between Honolulu and the American Samoa.Instead,passengers will be assigned seats when they check-in to make sure weight is evenly distributed around the main cabin(主客舱)of the plane.The airline will keep at least one seat open per row or place children under the age of 13 in those seats.
Some passengers said the policy was discriminatory as it only affects people flying on one route,from Honolulu to Pago Pago,with most passengers being of Samoan descent.Samoans have among the highest rates of obesity in the world.
Six complaints have been filed with the US Department of Transportation since 29September,as reported by the Economist.The department ruled in favour of the new policy,with airline officials claiming an even distribution of weight could prevent a crash landing.
Hawaiian Airlines said it had conducted a voluntary,six-month passenger weight survey on the Pago Pago route,starting in February asking all passengers to be weighed along with their carry-on luggage.As a result,the airline cancelled seat pre-selection only on the American Sanoa route because the other flight routes surveyed,for example in Korea and Japan,showed no evidence of extra weight.
Hawaiian Airlines is not the first passenger carrier to make the move.It follows Samoa Air starting to weigh passengers in 2013.Uzbekistan Airways also began weighing passengers in 2015.

24.Why did Hawaiian Airlines decide to cancel pre-booked seating for the flight between Honolulu and the American Samoa?B
A.Because they wanted to examine the passengers'health condition.
B.Because they wanted to weigh the passengers'weight.
C.Because they wanted to let the passengers pay in cash.
D.Because they wanted to find out the passengers'identities.
25.What can we infer from the passage?D
A.Passengers can sit anywhere they want on the flight between Honolulu and the American Samoa.
B.A child weighing 70kg can sit in the open seat per row on the flight between Honolulu and the American Samoa.
C.The policy that Hawaiian Airlines carried out had an effect on several flights.
D.Some passengers were against the policy that Hawaiian Airlines carried out.
26.What is the US Department of Transportation's attitude to some complaints about Hawaiian Airlines'action?A
A.Negative.B.Neutral.C.Supportive.D.Cautious.
27.What does the underlined words"the move"in the last paragraph refer to?C
A.Thinking of ways to reduce the company's expenses.
B.Learning how weighing its passengers could save fuel.
C.Weighing its passengers before they board the plane.
D.Asking its passengers to lose weight before they board the plane.

14.Children make quicker decisions to eat"tasty"food and reward centres in their brains light up after watching food commercials on television,compared to nonfood commercials,a small study finds.
The researchers studied 23 children aged 8 to 14 who gave taste and health ratings for 60 food items.Afterwards,kids chose whether to"eat"or"not eat"each food item-without actually eating them-while undergoing brain scans.The scans measure changes in blood flow within the brain,which is thought to reflect the activity of brain cells.
While the kids were making their decisions,they were periodically shown TV commercials,some for fast food outlets and some for nonfood businesses.Each set of commercials was followed by a set of 10food choices.
In general,kids did not choose foods based on their health ratings and chose based on taste.But after watching a food commercial,taste seemed even more important to them and they made their choices faster.The area of the brain involved in reward valuation was more active during food decisions after watching foodrelated commercials than after nonfood commercials.
"What we know from studies like this one is that food marketing has effects that go beyond simply increasing our liking or wanting of the product being advertised and actually affect our preferences for all foods in that category,"said Emma Boyland of the University of Liverpool.
"Parents should be aware of these results so that they can put limits on screen time that involves food advertising,"Bruce said."They should also discuss with children the importance of thinking about commercials properly.""But commercials are almost everywhere-television,online,radio,clothing.As adults,we have to work to teach children that a real healthy diet to support a full and active life contains very little of the food they see advertised,"Boyland said.

32.What were the children asked to do in the research?B
A.Select favourite commercials.
B.Decide whether to eat or not to eat.
C.Observe the activity of brain cells.
D.List health ratings for some foods.
33.What happened to the children after watching food commercials?A
A.The reward centres in their brains acted actively.
B.They made food choices based on health ratings.
C.They confused taste rating with health rating of the foods.
D.They had a good command of the methods to choose foods.
34.What can we infer from Boyland's words?B
A.Food marketing should be strictly controlled.
B.It's hard to stop kids being exposed to food advertising.
C.Parents should forbid children to watch food commercials.
D.Children should be warned not to eat the advertised foods.
35.What is mainly talked about in the passage?D
A.Children make decisions quickly when watching commercials.
B.Children's bad eating habits are mainly caused by food commercials.
C.Parents are concerned about the effect of food advertisements on kids.
D.Food advertisements can have a great effect on children's eating habits.

Dear Zhang Hua,
It's three months since I heard from you last time. Now I want to tell you an impressive story happened on my first lesson.
On hearing the bell, students ran into the classroom as quickly as they can.But a boy,Li Ming, whose father died a month ago,was late for the class. He stood outside the classroom, silently.I smiled to him and let him came in.After a while,he cried on his desk. Then I walked to him and asked what had happened. He told me that his mother was ill and he had to take some medicine for her.At the same time,he apologized to me for his lateness.Moved by his words,I praised him for his deeds and decided to sing a song named"Mother"for the students. How time flies!Class was over before I realized it.
From the story I felt we should respect our parents and do our best to help them.Do you think so?I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours truly,

6.This Way to Dreamland
Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant,especially when this makes them forget what they should be doing.Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what's happening around them.They can seem forgetful and clumsy.(36)BThey annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and missing the important things.
But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history.(37)C Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions?
So how can you come up with brilliant daydreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?
First,understand that some opportunities(机会) for daydreaming are better than others.Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams.(38)A And if you want to improve your chances of having a creative idea while you're daydreaming,try to do it while you are involved in another task-preferably something simple,like taking a shower or walking,or even making meaningless drawings.
It's also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate."Mindfulness",being focused,is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep.(39)E
Finally,you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away.(40)G
Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually in the clouds.
A.Having interesting things to think about also helps.
B.They stare off into space and wander by themselves.
C.Without wandering minds,we wouldn't have relativity,Coke or Post-it notes.
D.At one time,daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.
E.It involves slow,steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm and attentive.
F.Daydreams are often very simple and direct,quite unlike sleep dreams,which may be hard to understand.
G.Therefore,it's a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you're in the daydream zone.
