Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence -- and a not-so-good influence -- on this generation of American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in focus groups.

Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” effect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an “easily distracted(分心的) generation”. And 64 percent said the technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically(学术地).” Many students think “doing research” now means just doing a quick search on Google.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. A majority of the teachers came from Advanced Placement classes, which provide college-level work for high school students.

Judy Buchanan is director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster.

“Teachers really like these tools because they are ways to make some of learning exciting and engaging. Young people like these tools. And the goal is to really help them become creators of content, and meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers.”

But one problem the survey found is that many students are lacking in digital literacy. In other words, they trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills they need to judge the quality of online information.

“It’s just a lot to learn about how to distinguish credible sources. And it’s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to. It’s like everything else in a world in which things can happen quickly, you really do need to have a way to step back, reflect and analyze the information you have. And teachers can do a lot to teach that.”

Another problem the survey found is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.

Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

67. Most teachers who took the online survey thought the Internet tools help students in _____.

A. becoming more independent        B. being more serious in study

C. doing a quick search on Google      D. developing their research ability

68. According to Ms. Buchanan, the survey aims_______.

A. to help students become more creative

B. to draw students’ attention away from the Internet

C. to make people learn the benefits of the Internet tools

D. to persuade students to use traditional ways of research

69. According to the researchers, which of the following do students lack when facing the Internet?

A. The ability of doing research online.

B. The interest in using the Internet tools.

C. The skills of judging online information.

D. The methods of obtaining online information.

70. Which of the following is the disadvantage of the Internet tools?

A. Offering little useful information.

B. Search engines are not very convenient.

C. Making students unwilling to work hard.

D. Making students addicted to online information.

When I am feeling down, I listen to uplifting music to lift my spirits. When I want to calm down, I listen to Indian classical instrumental music. Many times, I look at contemporary Indian art - either in real art galleries or on virtual art galleries on the Web to improve my mood. I particularly like the paintings with vibrant (鲜明的) colors or ones which present a calm landscape using gentle colors.

Art therapy (治疗) uses the creation or viewing of art to help people discover and express their feelings. Unlike art for art’s sake, which focuses on the finished piece, art therapy focuses on the process of creation itself. Art therapists believe that the act of making a piece of art triggers internal activity that contributes to physical, emotional and spiritual healing. For people who are not able or ready to create art, going to an art museum or looking through art books or virtual art galleries can also be helpful. Simply viewing art refreshes the spirit and promotes relaxation.

Art therapy is helpful in healing in various ways. The aesthetic (审美的) quality of the work produced can lift a person’s mood, boost self-awareness, improve self-esteem and increase self-confidence. Also, research shows that physiological functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration (呼吸), become slow when people are deeply involved in an activity they enjoy.

Because art therapy uses a language other than words, it is often employed in treating patients with physical or emotional illnesses who have difficulty talking about their fears or hopes, or about their anger and other strong emotions. The creation of art helps people get in touch with thoughts and feelings that are often hidden from the conscious mind.

Stress reduction is also a significant benefit. Studies have shown that repressing strong feelings can lead to a buildup of stress, and that stress can intensify pain and the symptoms of various diseases. Because art therapy helps people access their unconscious mind and release pent-up (被抑制的) emotions, it has been found to be very useful in treating those suffering from stress and stress-related illnesses.

A. going to an art museum                 B. going to the virtual art galleries

C. surfing on the Internet                  D. reading art books

66. Why is art therapy useful to patients with physical or emotional illnesses?

A. It lets them forget about their fears.       B. It helps them release their hidden feelings.

C. It helps improve their social skills.        D. It helps them hide their feelings.

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion across cultures. For example, many people in Russia smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings.Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.

Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.

It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States.People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.

59. What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?

A. Love            B. Politeness             C. Joy             D. Thankfulness

60. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can ___ .

A. show friendliness to strangers              B. be used to hide true feelings

C. be used in the wrong places                D. show personal habits

61. What should we do before attempting to “read” people?

A. Learn about their relations with others.     B. Understand their cultural backgrounds.

C. Find out about their past experience.       D. Figure out what they will do next.

62. What would be the best title for the test?

A. Cultural Differences                    B. Smiles and Relationship

C. Facial Expressiveness                   D. Habits and Emotions

Everyone wants to have a healthy heart. Still, heart diseases affect more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States. The good news is that some simple, everyday habits can make a big difference in your ability to live a healthy lifestyle. Here are some worst habits for your heart, and how to avoid them.

Watching TV

Sitting for hours on end increases your risk of heart attack and stroke(中风). “some exercise doesn’t make up for the time you sit,” says Harmony R. Reynolds. Why? The lack of movement may affect blood levels of fats and sugars. Dr. Reynolds advises walking around regularly and, if you’re at work, standing up to talk on the phone.

Leaving hostility and depression unchecked

Are you feeling stressed or sad? It can do harm to your heart. While everyone feels this way some of the time, how you handle these emotions can affect your heart health. “Those with stress are in greater danger; research has shown a benefit to laughter and social support,” Dr. Reynolds says. “And it’s helpful to be able to go to someone and talk about your problems.”

Cutting off from the world

It’s no secret that on some days, other human beings can seem annoying and too difficult to get along with. However, it makes sense to strengthen your connections to the ones you actually like. People with stronger connections to family, friends, and society in general tend to live longer, healthier lives.

Everyone needs alone time, but you should still reach out to others and keep in touch whenever you can.

Drinking (too much) alcohol

Sure, studies suggest a small amount of alcohol may be good for your heart. However, too many of us drink over. Too much alcohol is linked to a greater risk of high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats, and heart failure.

55. Watching TV for a long time may ______.

A. help you live a healthy life             B. lead to heart attack

C. make up for the time you sit            D. make you feel stressed

56. Which of the following is bad for those with stress and sadness?

A. Laughing a lot                   B. Talking about their own problems.

C. Getting social support             D. Leaving these emotions alone.

57. If you want a long healthy life, you should ________.

A. cut off from the world              B. get along well with others

C. stay alone as much as possible       D. drink no alcohol

58. From the passage we can infer that ______.

A. some everyday habits can help avoid heart attacks

B. standing up to talk on the phone is not a good idea

C. it’s easy to strengthen your connections to others

D. too much alcohol is not linked to heart failure
