Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you see the manners of your foreign friends, you will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.
A visitor to India should remember that they are impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a rotating(转)movement of the head is to show agreement. In Bulgaria you shake your head to show “yes”—a nod to show “no”.
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs while sitting and talking to someone, even at an important meeting. But doing this could cause offence to a Thailander. Also touching the head of a grown-up is impolite. It's just not done in Thailand.
American informality is well known. But we Chinese are very likely to regard it as a lack of respect when we first encounter(遇见)it, especially in the business world. The almost immediate use of first names upsets Chinese who are not used to it.
We should not be surprised if Americans don't shake hands with us. They often just nod or smile. And they simply say “Hi”or“Hello”. Americans at a party are not likely to say“goodbye”to everyone when they leave. They just wave their hands or say something informal to the whole group such as“Well, see you tomorrow”or“So long everybody”. Then they disappear, no handshakes, for Americans have different senses of timing and pace from us. We need to understand this if we want to understand Americans.
Knowing about manners is useful when you are traveling, but you need to know the language used to express for ritual(礼节).

I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric (怪僻的) farmer. I had never met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything.

Looking ahead to 2010, it appears financially(资金上)impossible to accommodate 85,000 new students in classrooms at public four-year universities. Fortunately, such an approach(方法)is not necessary. Indeed, it's not even appropriate(合适的).
Several forces are riding to the rescue. The two most important are distance learning and community and technical colleges. These will not eliminate the traditional setting where bachelor'(学士)and graduate degrees are earned. But they will be able to handle much of the growth in enrollments and the demand for higher education.
“When faced with a problem created by technology, apply more technology,” a late journalist once asserted. Higher education seems to be an example. New learning technology is a crucial tool in teaching new technical skills.
William Richardson, president of Johns Hopkins University, praised “Western Governors' University”--a virtual institution(虚拟大学)that uses the Internet and other information technology to overcome the vast distances of the West and reach people with education. “Just as the extremely controlled high school of old was perfect training for an assembly-line work force, so today's college is equally appropriate as a setting for a society whose members must acquire and manage knowledge from a wide variety of sources,” he notes.
Eastern Washington has long been a leader in this movement. For the past decade, Spokane's Education Service District 101 has brought the best teachers in the region to rural classrooms via satellite uplink. Washington State University(WSU) president Sam Smith reports that, during the same period, WSU managed a one-third increase in students with only 2 percent more faculty.
It's been done by holding growth at the main campus almost flat, setting up three branch campuses, locating learning at community colleges, and offering an extended degree program where students learn at home. In each case, technology is used to extend the “reach” of faculty.
The other cost-effective strategy is reliance on community and technical colleges. Here, Washington State has an edge. Its public two-year colleges provide the most extensive coverage in the nation. Jean Floten, president of Bellevue Community College, notes the system served 425,000 adult enrollees last year-a tenth all the state's adult population. Almost half were there for job training versus 40 percent for academic preparation.
(1)According to the author, to enroll more students, universities do not have to ________.
[ ]
A. enlarge their campuses
B. gain additional technical support
C. retain the traditional academic setting
D. accommodate more faculty members
(2)When the author says “Higher education seems to be an example” Paragraph 3, he means problems with higher education can be solved by all EXCEPT ________.
[ ]
A. applying new learning technology
B. using Internet and other information technology
C. teaching new technical skills
D. setting up more technical colleges
(3)It is implied in Paragraph 4 that to cope with the new problem, we should ________.
[ ]
A. set up new campuses
B. train more assembly-line workforce
C. provide knowledge through diverse means
D. reinforce high schools of old
(4)What has made possible “a one-third increase in students with only 2 percent more faculties”? _______.
[ ]
A. Technical and community college
B. New advances in science and technology
C. More learning centers
D. New school curricula
(5)Which aspect of education is mainly discussed in the text? ________.
[ ]
A. Traditional approaches
B. Top-ranked universities
C. Cost-effective strategies
D. Technology-based business

HUMANS have spent years exploring space, but how much do we know about deep inside the planet on which we live? The idea of exploring the earth's core (地核)was detailed in an article called“Modest Proposal (建议)”. It was written in May by American scientist David Stevenson. It is similar idea to an American sci-fi movie that was released in March, The Core.
So, because they deal with the same topic, it wouldn't be too strange to compare a scientific report with a sci-fi movie.
Why explore
The report: The solid inner core of the earth is fluid(不固定的)and responsible for the earth's magnetic field (磁场). * Scientists don't know exactly why all this is so, nor do they know the exact make-up or temperature of the core. *
The movie: An unknown force has caused the earth's inner core to stop rotating (旋转). With the planet's magnetic field rapidly decreasing, our atmosphere starts to come apart.
The result is deadly: birds lose their ability to fly in the right direction and the earth eventually (最终)becomes like a microwave oven (微波炉), cooked by the sun.
How explore
The report: A nuclear explosion (核爆炸)would be the best way to create a hole big enough to enter the earth. The crack (裂缝)needs to be as long and as deep as several football fields, but only about 30era wide. * The event would be as powerful as an earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter Scale (里氏震级).*
At least 100,000 tons of hot iron would be poured into the crack, along with a metal probe (探测器)the size of a grapefruit (柚子).
The weight of the iron, which is much denser than earth' s outer regions, would open a gap all the way to the planet core, about 3,000kin below. The probe would fall at about 16kin per hour as the crack doses up behind it. * Stevenson said the amount of iron needed is equal to what' s produced in factories around the world in a week. *
The movie: Send a manned vehicle that looks like a windowless subway (地铁)train into the earth's core. Virgil, the ship, is made of a metal that can stand the extreme temperature and pressure found in the core.
Virgil began its journey when it was dropped in the middle of the ocean because this is where the crust (地壳)is thinnest.
What to do
The report: The weeks-long mission would measure the temperature and chemical composition (make-up)of the core.
The movie: Blow up five 200-megaton (兆吨)nuclear bombs to restart the core.
Choose the best choice according to the story________.
(1)What do the report and the movie have in common?
[ ]
A.Both deal with exploring space.
B.Both deal with going deep to the inside of the earth.
C.Both offer the same reason to explore the earth's core.
D.Both consider it possible for the core to stop rata- ring.
(2)In the movie, a nuclear explosion would ________.
[ ]
A.help man enter the earth
B.create a big crack that leads to the earth's core
C.produce hot iron
D.make the earth's core work again
(3)How long would it take the probe to reach the core according to the report? ________.
[ ]
(4)What does the underlined word“stand”mean? ________
[ ]
(5)We can infer from the passage that the core________.
[ ]
A.is in the danger of stopping rotating
B.still has a lot for us to explore
C.controls the birds' sense of directions
D.might blow up

Frank W. Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family was very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for displaying goods to arouse people's interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends(小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said:Five Cents Each. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.
Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.
By 1919, Woolworth had over 1,000 stores in the USA and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always ran his business according to strict rules, of which the most important one was:“The Customer(顾客)Is Always Right.”
