While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

  ◆Try physical activity

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity.Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.

  ◆Take care of yourself

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest.If you easily get angry and can not sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

  ◆Make time for yourself

Schedule time for both work and entertainment.Don't forget, play can be just as important to your overall well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun.Go window-shopping or work on a hobby.Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

◆Make a list of things to do

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there's so much to do, and not enough time”.Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything.Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then ________ checking off each task as it is completed.Set out to do the most important tasks first.

Comic(喜剧的)book superhero Spider-Man uses tiny hairs on his fingertips to climb up walls. But he could have had another secret weapon to help him stick.

Scientists have now found that some spiders can also make silk in their feet, which may sometimes help them get a firmer grip on a surface.

Spiders are good at gripping walls with their legs.Thousands of little hairs on their feet make it possible. To test whether spiders also make these hairs wet to improve grip, scientists watched zebra tarantulas crawl(爬行)up glass slides.

When they tilted a glass slide until it was almost vertical, the spider slipped a few millimeters before attaching itself again. The scientists were surprised to see little threads(线)stretching from its feet to the slide. When they studied the spider’s feet under a special microscope, they found tiny silk-shooting spouts(吐出)among the hairs.

This was a surprise because scientists had previously thought spiders only use special organs near their stomachs to make silk.

It’s possible that, a long time ago, feet were the first body parts of spiders to produce silk.Only later in their evolutionary(进化)history did spiders develop spinnerets on their abdomens(腹部)to produce silk for webs(网).

If so, the researchers say, this could mean that the silk’s original purpose was to , rather than to build homes or trap prey(猎物).

Read the following passage, then fill in the form with the correct information from the passage.

(阅读以下文章,然后用正确的信息完成下列表格。)

There are three branches of medicine. One is called “doctor medicine”, or “scientific medicine”.Scientific doctors try to observe sicknesses, look for logical patterns, and then find out how the human body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century B.C.Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient world this method probably didn’t cure many patients.

A second kind of medicine is called “natural cures” or “folk medicine”, in which less educated people try to cure sicknesses with various herbs. These folk healers also use observation and logic, but they don’t realize it.They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then they keep doing that.Folk medicine widespread long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times than doctor medicine.

The third kind is called “health spas”, or “faith healing”.Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy(神圣的)man and being immediately healed.Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a magic word, to cure you. Some religious groups organize special healing centers for the sick.In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways. They also pray to the gods.If you are feeling sad or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better.

Read the following passage, then fill in the form behind it with the correct information from the passage.

(读下列文章,然后用正确的信息完成下列表格。)?

It is December thirty-first, 2004, the time when the old year dies and the New Year is born.

Many Americans have parties at home and invite all their friends. Many of these events are noisy.People shout and sing. They often blow on small noisemakers when the New Year arrives at midnight. They kiss their husband or wife or the person they are with. They dance to music.Other Americans spend a quiet evening at home. They drink Champagne at midnight to welcome the New Year.

Some people drink too much alcohol at New Year’s Eve celebrations. This can lead to tragic results if a person drinks too much and then drives a car.The National Safety Council says hundreds of people die in road accidents during the holiday.?

In recent years, the danger of accidents has resulted in a new tradition called the “designated driver”.One person among a group of friends drinks little or no alcohol during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Then this designated driver can safely drive the other people home. Many American cities also offer free taxi service on New Year’s Eve to take people home safely.

Other Americans observe the coming of the New Year at events without alcohol.More than 220 American cities hold these First Night celebrations.Artists in Boston Massachusetts started the tradition of First Night celebrations in 1976.They wanted to observe the coming of a New Year. But they did not want to hold noisy drinking parties. So they organized music, art and other events to observe the holiday.

Having one of those days or weeks when everything seems to annoy(使恼怒)you?Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood(情绪)will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster, often within a day or two.

  ·Walk it off

Exercise is the most popular way to remove a bad mood.A person who’s in a bad mood has low energy and high tension(紧张).Taking a fast ten-minute walk, or taking some quick exercise can do wonders towards changing that bad mood.

·Avoid things that won’t improve your mood

TV may not help much:you need to increase your energy level and stimulate(刺激)your mind. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how ________ are linked.Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed(消沉的)moods while carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(意大利面食),produce a calming effect in people who have a desire for them.

Read the following passage, then fill in the form with the correct information from the passage.

(阅读文章,然后用正确的信息完成下列表格。)

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming home to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV.Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called latchkey children. They’re children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a subject of concern.

Lynette Long was once the headmistress of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule against wearing jewelry.A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys fastened.I was constantly telling them to put them inside their shirts. There were so many keys.It never came to my mind what they meant.”Slowly, she learned they were house keys.

She and her husband began talking to the children who had them. They learned of the impact(影响)working couples and single parents were having on their children.Fear is the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in each three latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being scared. Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety.

The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. It might be in a shower stall, under a bed, or in a closet. The second is TV.They’ll often play it at high volume. It’s hard to get statistics(数据)on latchkey children, the Longs learned. Most parents are slow to admit they leave their children alone.

Passage structure(篇章结构)

下面是一篇杂志文章,请将标有A-F的段落插入文章中标号为1-5的合适位置,使这篇文章意义完整,结构连贯;其中有一个段落是多余的。

Every year more and more plants and animals disappear never to be seen again.

  1.________

Every day, thousands of species(种类)of animals draw closer to extinction(灭绝).There are countless numbers of species which may become extinct before they are even discovered.

  2.________

The problem is acid(酸)rain.Acid rain is a kind of air pollution.

  3.________

The rain in many places isn’t natural and clean any more. It’s full of acid chemicals.

  4.________

But dead fish may be just the beginning of the problem.Scientists are finding other effects of acid rain.

  5.________

Now scientists are also beginning to study the effects of acid rain on larger animals. For example, they believe that some deer in Poland are less healthy because of acid rain.If deer are hurt by the rain, what about people? This is the question many people are beginning to ask.No one knows the answer yet.But it is an important question for us all.

A.Seldom does it rain and there is little fresh water here for the fish.A series of development projects has destroyed the natural environment.Waste of different kinds can be seen here and there. This has caused a serious problem for fish and other animals living around.

B.In some large areas trees are dying. Not just one tree here and there, but the whole forests. At first scientists couldn’t understand why. There were no bugs(虫)or diseases in these trees. The weather was not dry.But now they think that the rain was the cause.Acid rain is making the earth more acidic in these areas. Some kinds of trees cannot live in the soil that is very acidic.

C.When it falls in lakes, it changes them too.The lakes become more acidic.Acid water is like vinegar(醋)or lemon juice. It hurts when it gets in your eyes.It also kills the plants and animals that usually live in lake water. That is why the fish are dying in lakes.

D.It is caused by factories that burn coal or oil or gas. These factories send smoke into the air.The wind often carries the smoke far from the factories. Some of the harmful substances(物质)in the smoke may come down with the rain hundreds of miles away.

E.Strangely, it is the most intelligent(聪明的)but most thoughtless animal that is causing most of the problems-man.Nature is very carefully balanced(平衡的)and if this balance is disturbed(破坏),animals can disappear surprisingly fast.

F.In many lakes the fish are dying.Fishermen are worried because every year there are fewer fish and some lakes have no fish at all.Scientists are beginning to get worried too. What is killing the fish?

Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension

Help your child keep what he reads-a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to gain important information from textbooks.

1.Let him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads.Plus, he’s not only seeing the words, he’s hearing them, too.

2.Provide the right kinds of books.Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren’t too hard.He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help.Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the over all meaning of the story

3.________.To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly-a skill known as fluency.Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so he’ll become more fluent.

4.Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling mightily with comprehension, he may need more help with his reading-for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.

5.Supplement class reading. If his class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will help him get better prepared and make his way through tougher classroom texts.

6.Talk about what he’s reading. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book.Ask questions before, during, and after a reading session. For example:

  Before:“What interests you in this book?What doesn’t?”

During:“What’s going on in the book?Is it turning out the way you thought it would?”

After:“Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it?”

1.Which sentence in the passage can replace the following sentence?

What has been learned in advance can assist him in understanding what he will learn in his lessons.

2.If a child is reading a 900-word-long passage, how many words should he recognize at least according to the passage?(Please answer within 10 words.)

3.Translate the underlined sentence in the passage into Chinese.

4.Fill in the blank with a proper topic for the third suggestion.(Please answer within 10 words.)
