Patti discovered the meaning of running when she was 23. At that time she was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day and had1over 50 pounds. “I decided to2,” she says. But I got7of that soon,” Patti remembers. She wanted to do something really pleasant. She found that the8times in her life were times when she was physically active. So she took up9.
She decided to start10the next day. She ran for an hour, 11a total of 7 miles on her first run. “I couldn’t walk for 2 weeks 12I felt painful all over!” Patti recalls. “But I felt so wonderful!” Patti wasn’t crazy about running yet, but she was in13with the after effects of it.
Within seven months, Patti had run her first marathon, qualified for the Boston Marathon, and placed 25th in the world for14distance runners. Over the next years, she15records and set standards for women in the sport. She was the first American woman to run a marathon16than 2 hours 30 minutes, and then broke another two records17an 8-month period.
Patti believes that, if we can18standards for ourselves, we can pull ourselves out of the most difficult19and come out on top. “Everybody has to be a/an20and everybody has that in them.”

My Fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease (老年痴呆症).
Upon learning this news, Nancy & I had to decide whether as private citizens we would1this a private matter or we would make this news known in a2way.
In the past Nancy suffered from breast cancer3I had my cancer surgeries (外科手术). We found that after we told it to the public, we were able to4public awareness(意识). We were happy that5many more people went to have a test. They were treated in early stages and able to6to normal, healthy lives.
So now, we feel it is7to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater8of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are9by it.
At the moment I feel just fine. I’d10to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have11done. I will continue to share12journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch13my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s Disease14, the family often suffers a lot. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this15experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help she will16it with faith and courage.
At last, let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of17me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home,18that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and endless optimism (乐观) for its future.
I now begin this19that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright20ahead.
Thank you my friends. May God always bless you.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

In a small open courtyard, outside a school building, there were flowers here and there. In the sunshine, a 1was lying on the grass, reading a book with 2concentration. Near her, another child was carefully watering the flowers, while a third was3with his back against a tree and had a 4on his knees. He appeared to be drawing or writing something on it. 9I watched this scene on a morning in May years ago, it 10to me that a visitor here would11 have thought be had entered a formal school. He would have been even more12if he had been told that the children he was13came from different kinds of academic levels.
That14has been staying with me ever since. I have been15about some problems. Why in many schools are our children16asked to acquire skills in a way 17from a real-life context(情境)? Why does a18school child so often become a defeated school failure?
Developmental psychologist Margaret Donald once said,”19of the intellectual framework (知识框架) on which we20our teaching is misleading.” In my opinion, a child learns everything in human situation. And if every child could learn in the same way as the children in the school I visited, they would develop better.
