War Horse author Michael Morpurgo is being interviewed:

Reporter:How did War Horse become so successful?

Michael:War Horse was published in 1982,and it did not sell very well. But my publishers kept it in print, along with all my books.I am very grateful to Egmont and I’m sure now they are very grateful to themselves.

The book was discovered 21 years later,by accident.I was on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 in 2003 when my work was becoming better known. One of the listeners was the mother of a director called Tom Morris, and after reading War Horse herself she told her son to read it.Two years later the play came out,and it was a huge hit that went to the West End,Broadway and now Canada and Australia, then a nationwide American tour in June this year.

In 2009 kathy kennedy, the producer who worked with Steven Spielberg, walked into the New London Theatre to see the play because her daughter liked it very much. She then phoned Spielberg and told him this would be his next film! The way it all happened is better than any of my stories.War Horse has now sold over 1 million copies.

Reporter:Has War Horse changed your life?

Michael:It has made all the difference in the world. The most important gift it has given us is not to have to worry about money, because there has always been a slight anxiety. It has allowed us to ensure our grandchildren’s education. There is a disadvantage to it as well, which is an assumption that I am super rich.I’m not, actually. It is very nice and completely unexpected but I have got to go on writing. If I were younger,I think,it would go to my head. Now I am too old for anything to go to my head.It is not the same as winning the lottery(彩票)。

1.Why are Michael’s publishers grateful to themselves too?

A.Because they never stopped printing it and it finally proved successful.

B.Because they earned a lot thanks to books of high quality they printed.

C.Because they have the ability to enlarge their company.

D.Because they have the potential to film the story.

Three boys and three girls were going to Fort Lauderdale and when they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine in paper bags, dreaming of golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished behind them.

As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo, He sat in front of them, dressed in a plain,ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He kept chewing the inside of his lip a lot, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.

Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson's,and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life:perhaps he was a sea captain,a runaway from his wife,an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus,one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.

"We're going to Florida,” she said brightly, “I hear it's really beautiful.”

“It is,”he said quietly,as if remembering something he had tried to forget.

"Want some wine?" she said. He smiled and took a swig.  He thanked her and once again returned to his silence. After a while, she went back to the others, and Vingo nodded in his sleep.

In the morning, they awoke outside another Howard Johnson's.And this time Vingo went in.  The girl insisted that he join them.  He seemed very shy, and ordered black coffee and smoked nervously as the young people chattered about sleeping on beaches. When they returned to the bus,the girl sat with Vingo again, and after a while, slowly and painfully,he told his story. He had been in jail in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home.

“Are you married?”

“I don't know.

“You don’t know?” she said.

“Well, when I was in jail I wrote to my wife,”he said. “I told her that I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it.if the kids kept asking questions,if it hurt too much, well she could just forget me, I'd understand. Get a new guy,I said she's a wonderful woman, really something and forget about me. I told her she didn't have to write me for nothing.  And she didn't.  Not for three and a half years.”

"And you’re going home now,not knowing?”

“Yeah,”he said shyly. “Well, last week, when I was sure the parole (假释) was coming through, I wrote her again.  We used to live in Brunswick, just before Jacksonville, and there’s a big oak (橡树) tree just as you came into town. I told her that if she'd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I'd get off and come home,  If she didn't want me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I'd go on through.”

"Vow,” the girl exclaimed. "Wow.”

She told the others, and noon all of them were in it, caught up in the approach of Brunswick, looking at the pictures Vingo showed them of his wife and three children. The woman was handsome in a plain way,the children still unformed in the much-handled snapshots.

Now they were 20 miles from Brunswick, and the young people took over window seat on the right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. The bus acquired a dark, hushed mood, full of the silence of absence and lost years. Vingo stopped looking, tightening his face into the ex-con's mask, as if fortifying himself against still another disappointment.

Then Brunswick was ten miles, and then five. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying, doing small dances of joy. All except Vingo.

Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree. It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs,20 of them,30 of them, maybe hundreds,a tree that stood like a banner of welcome billowing in the wind. As the young people shouted, the old rose and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

1.Which is right about Vingo?

A.He was a sea captain.

B.He was a runaway from his wife,

C.He was an old soldier going home.

D.He was a prisoner.

2. The underlined word "`exclaimed" probably indicates that the girl was“______”

Long ago in a small town, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit.
When he arrived, he bounced (跳) happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, “This is a wonderful place. You might say that Barack Obama was elected President of the US because he knows how to give a good speech. In 2004, the little-known Obama gave a speech at the Democratic national Convention(民主党全国会议). It was a great speech---poetic, and inspiring. The people who heard it would remember it for a long time.

Since 2004, Obama has written and delivered thousands of speeches. These are usually praised for two reasons: he treats the audiences like intelligent adults, and he is able to express difficult ideas in a straightforward, natural way.

Before becoming President, Obama was a lawyer, a college professor, and a successful writer---his two memoirs have become best-sellers. The skills he needed to succeed in his previous jobs have also contributed to his success as a speechmaker.

As a lawyer, Obama learned how to make strong, convincing arguments. As a professor, he learned how to explain complex subjects in ways that helped students understand without boring them. As a writer, he learned how to use language to have a powerful influence on his audience.

     Secret weapons of Obama

Writing team: Obama has a team of people who write his speeches. The writers chat with Obama for hours about what he wants to say. They listen to recordings of past presidential addresses and seek advice from advisers. Obama usually edits and rewrites the drafts several times.

Make fun of the guests: Obama starts his speech by gently making fun of his guests. His opening lines attract the audiences’ attention while giving them an opportunity to relax and laugh at themselves and each other.

Making fun of himself: Obama laughs at his past mistakes and is never afraid of showing them to the public.

Obama delivers speeches to audiences large and small. He can make his audiences laugh or cry. His speeches are always thoughtful, well written, and just right for each occasion.
