We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people.“Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?”“When I got that great job,did Jim really feel good about it,as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back,it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really, listen, we miss thefeeling behind the words. Supposesomeone tells you,“You’re a lucky dng.”That’s Being friendly. But“lucky dog”?There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the phrase “lucky dog”puts you down(难过) a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.
“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for”is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in his phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture(姿态)?The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning behind what people say may save another mistake.

During the twentieth-century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A women marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children,of whom four or five lived till they were five years old.By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children.Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.
This important change in women’s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it.Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age,and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born.Very many more afterwards return to full or part-rime work.Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
