In 1896, the first
modern Olympic Games was held in Athens,
Greece. Since
then many countries have successfully held the Olympics, such as England, France,Germany, Canada,
the USA, Spain and Australia. After more than a
century the Games returned to its hometown in 2004.
When people hold the
Olympic Games, they always make an emblem(象征、会徵). The emblem of the
Athens Olympic Games was a white circle of olive branches in the sky.
Athens
was developing a spirit of peace. An officer said, "While in Athens, the world should
be at peace. We hope the peace is not just for a short time.
We would like the
message from the Athens Games to help countries come together and solve their
problems.
Two years later, the
Olympic Games will be held in China.
And China
has already made a seal as the emblem of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The
emblem has a single Chinese character on a red seal(印章)and
means "Chinese seal--dancing Beijing". Below it, there are the words
"Beijing 2008". The character in the emblem is "Jing’ [京].

English is a mixture of
many different languages. Because of this, the vocabulary of the English language
is very large. It is much larger than almost any other language in the world.
Many English words came
from Latin, the old language of Rome,
and Greek. From Latin we get words like "wine", "use" and
"day". From Greek we have
words such as "photograph", "Bible"(圣经)and
"ink". Because these two languages are extinct(过时的),
the words have more often come through other languages such as French, or the
old German language. There are also words from both Greek and Latin combined--
"television’’, for example, "tele" is Greek for "far"
and "vision" comes from Latin meaning "seeing".
Many common English
words came from other different places. "Tea" is from China, "banana" from West
Africa. "Potato" from the island of Haiti(海地)in
the West Indies(西印度群岛), and "tomato" from
Mexico. One reason why the English language came from different languages is
that many nations had invaded(侵略)Britain before. Two
thousand years ago Romans came from Italy, and stayed for over four
hundred years. After they left, came the Anglos(盎格鲁人), Saxons(撒克逊人)and
Jutes(朱特人)from
the northern part of Germany. In the ninth and tenth centuries Scandinavians(斯堪的纳维亚人)invaded
the northern and eastern parts of the country. Finally, in the eleventh century William
of Normandy(诺曼底)came from France, and became
the King of England. Thus the French civilization(文明)and the French language
were introduced into Britain.

C
Making friends is a
skill. Like most skills, it
improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must
be willing to take some action. You must first go where there are people. You
won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Talking with
those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activity. Many
people are nervous when, talking to new people. After all, meeting strangers means
facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the
unknown. Most of our fears about
dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us
or finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget
that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and
try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.
If you see someone you’d
like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a
conversation.
Just meeting someone new
does not mean that you will make friends with that person-friendship is based
on mutual liking and “give and take". It takes time and effort to
develop
