PART FOUR WRITING
SECTIONA
Direction: Reading the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks
with no more than three words that best fits the passage.
Two influential thinkers of the twentieth
century have died. John Kenneth Galbraith, the economist, died on April
twenty-ninth at the age of 97. Jane Jacobs, a defender of cities, died
April twenty-fifth at the age of 89.
Jane Jacobs believed cities should be densely
populated and full of different people and activity. She believed in the
value of natural growth. She opposed the kind of city planning that
involves big development and renewal projects that tear down old communities.
She is best known for her book "The
Death and Life of Great American Cities," published in nineteen
sixty-one. Another book was "The Nature of Economies." Yet
she never finished college.
Jane Jacobs was an activist in New York City. Her
work defeated a road plan to build a big highway through the Greenwich
Village area.
She was also against the war in Vietnam. She
had sons almost old enough to be called for duty. In nineteen sixty-eight
the family moved to Canada. But
she remained a community activist. Soon she was fighting a road plan in Toronto.
Jane Jacobs was born in the United States but lived and died in Canada. John
Kenneth Galbraith was born in Canada
but lived and died in the United
States.
Among his best-known books is "The
Affluent Society," from nineteen fifty-eight. He wrote that American
society had too many goods but not enough social services that show people care
about each other. He warned about widening divisions between the very rich
and the very poor.
John Kenneth Galbraith believed in the power
of government to improve lives. He believed in a system of progressive taxes,
and in public support for the arts and government involvement in
education. He also supported the idea of public ownership of housing and
medical services.
Experts say John Kenneth Galbraith and Jane
Jacobs led many to question not only how and where they want to live and
work. It also led them to wonder what kind of society they wanted to leave
for their children.

following passage and answer the questions according to the imfomation you get
in the passage and the required words limit.
Different creatures have developed some
pretty creative ways to get their rest and stay safe. The lizard(蜥蝎)likes to sleep at the far
end of small branches hanging out over a pond or lake in the rain forest. If a
snake tries to slither up the branch to eat it ,it will shake the branch and
knock the lizard off ,and the lizard will fall safely into the water.
Chameleons can change color to match their surroundings in order to hide even
while sleeping.
Corillas(大猩猩)like to sleep high in the
trees. They build a new bed every night, sometimes taking up to half an hour to
pile branches ,twigs ,and leaves into a comfortable bed .Birds also find it
safe to sleep in the trees, but unless they have eggs or young chicks ,they don’t
use a nest .They just lock their feet around a branch and hang on .A special
tendon(腱)in their legs in
automatically tight when they are at rest ,so they won’t let go and fall.
Dolphins
live underwater ,but must come to the surface to breather .Scientists now
believe that dolphins may sleep with only half their brain, while the other
half stays awake to keep them safe and breathing. Seals also do this ,lying on
their sides on the surface of the water with one flipper underwater paddling to
keep their noses above the surface. Some ducks may also have this ability, and
actually sleep with one eye closed and one eye open.

TOKYO-As
Japanese shops run out of face masks amid the H1N1 flu outbreak, local
authorities and bloggers are offering do-it-yourself tips on making masks from
kitchen paper, coffee filters and even sanitary pads.
The western city of Tatsuno now gives handy hints on its official
website on fashioning a basic anti-flu mask from gauze, tissue and a pair of
rubber bands. “We had many enquiries from people on what o do after they found
no marsks in the stores,” said Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a disaster management
official with the city’s fire brigade.
The instructions, first posted last week,
have since been used by the websites of other cities, Kobayashi said by
telephone.
A private hospital in the central district of
Niigata has meanwhile proposed a mask made from kitchen paper, while one
blogger showed how to make a mask from textile and fine wire and one made with
coffee filters.
The latest edition of Aera Weekly, published
by the Asahi Shimbun(《朝日新闻》), carried an
article in which a reporter tried on various types of homemade masks. The
coffee-filter mask “looks like Donald Duck” but brought an unexpected “sense of
security”, the article said.
Japan has confirmed 342 cases of
H1N1 virus, according to the Health Ministry. There have been no death reports
in Japan
and the government has said the spread of infections appears to be easing.
