We finally arrived at the Elephant Orphanage to take care of the elephants. We worked out a new routine and would work from Monday to Friday and then we all set off for our weekend tour wherever our travel guide inspired us. These adventures started with the beaches.
All the locals were very friendly, from the beach sellers to the guest house owners. The bus journeys there were always interesting. We would choose to travel the cheapest way, which meant the “local” way. The perception (观念) of personal space in Sri Lanka is different to home. A bus is not full until it is truly impossible for yet another person to hang out of its doors.
Our other trips included the cities of Kandy and Colombo, mountains, temples and caves, etc. The choices were endless. Most of the other volunteers had also come alone and everyone had the same like-minded attitude — to experience and absorb everything! We got on very well, I never felt lonely and in fact some lifelong friends were made here.
I was due to leave Sri Lanka on Valentine’s Day. My next destination was Thailand. Life in Sri Lanka was good and as the end drew closer I felt an extreme range of emotions. Sadness at having to say goodbye mixed with a comforting certainty that I would be returning here one day. I also felt excited about the next part of my journey. I was also proud. Personally I had accomplished so much in my short time here. I was no longer scared of the unknown, but quite addicted to it! My confidence had grown as I had my self-reliance (自力更生), patience and mercy.
The rest of my trip throughout Asia and Indonesia brought many new experiences, extreme highs and lows, but Sri Lanka as my first country will always hold a special place in my memory.
One year and many adventures later, I returned home to London, Heathrow. My mum was waiting there with a big hug (拥抱) at the place I had left her before. I had grown up in this period of time and I felt ready to take on the biggest challenge of them all — my future!
After some weeks, I contacted Travelers Worldwide, the organization who had helped me so much at the very beginning, for a position in their company. And I was lucky enough to get the job.
Then I learnt that Travelers only employs ex-volunteers and that my experience gained through traveling was in fact a must to the job. I moved down to Brighton, to live again by the sea. I am now the person responsible for coordinating (协调) the projects in Sri Lanka and I organize new volunteers each day. I had my first trip back to Sri Lanka, as the UK coordinator, just before Christmas and it was as attractive as I remembered.
The achievements of a “gap year” away cannot be measured. The first hand experience of seeing the world offers the opportunity to test your limits. You come back stronger for it, with a bank of special memories and life-long friends. It is something everyone should experience. It will change your perceptions, and it might even change your life. It certainly changed mine.

The National Society SAR Americanism Committee is pleased to announce the National Americanism Poster Contest. The aim of this contest is to stimulate (刺激) interest in American History in support of the established school course.
This contest is for students in the 3rd grade, 4th grade or 5th grade, depending on which year the American Revolution is taught in their educational system — including ordinary and home schooled students.
The contest is also open to members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who are in the same grade but whose school system may not be taking part in the contest. In the case where the local school system is taking part in it, the scout must enter the contest through the school and not as a separate entry.
The topic for 2011-2012 year’s contest:
The Battle of Guilford’s Courthouse
The contest is judged at the NSSAR Annual Congress by members of the NSSAR Americanism Committee. A representative of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) is invited to join in the poster judging.
How the posters are judged:
Posters will be judged on the following factors:
● Does the poster express the annual theme?
● Does the poster show originality (原创性) by the student?
● Does the poster show evidence of research?
● Does the poster show artistic merit and creativity?
● Does the poster accurately reflect the historical event?
● Is the poster neat and visually pleasing?
How the contest works:
● Each local school winner will compete at the Chapter level.
● Each Chapter winner will compete at the State level.
● Once the State Society has selected a winner, that poster will compete at the National level. (Only one entry from each State Society will be accepted.)
The State Society winners will be displayed during the National Contest. The Americanism Committee will announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners during the Youth Awards Luncheon at the National Congress. And the national winners will receive a Rosette Ribbon, with the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place winners being awarded money funded from the Americanism Trust Fund.
44. The National Americanism Poster Contest is held mainly to .
A. revise the established school course
B. arouse students’ interest in American History
C. memorize the Battle of Guilford’s Courthouse
D. raise money for the National Society SAR Americanism Committee
45. How will the scout enter the test if his / her school system is taking part in the contest?
A. The scout needs to go together with their parents.
B. The scout may enter the contest on his / her own.
C. The scout has to be accompanied by his / her teacher.
D. The scout has to enter the contest through his / her school.
46. What can be learned about the contest winners?
A. All the national winners will be awarded money.
B. The Chapter level winners are in the highest level.
C. The number of entries from each State Society is not limited.

When your skin gets burned, it’s not only painful; it’s bad for your body. Burned skin cannot keep the bacteria out, so infections (感染) are common. Doctors often wrap burns in bandages for protection, but a recent study shows that a new kind of bandage can actually fight infection.
Toby Jenkins, a scientist in England, worked on the study. Jenkins and his colleagues developed a material that contains tiny capsules (胶囊). To a bacterium, these capsules look like cells just waiting to be damaged. The bacteria attack the cells by releasing poisons. But when the bacteria attack the capsules, the capsules fight back — by releasing antibiotics (抗生素) that knock out any nearby bacteria.
The material was tested on two types of harmful bacteria. When researchers placed pieces of the new material in a dish with the bacteria, the bacteria barely grew at all, which is unusual. This observation led the researchers to believe that the material really works.
The scientists want the bandages to work specifically against dangerous bacteria, so they also tested the material on a harmless type of E. coli bacteria. When the material was placed in a dish with E. coli, the bacteria grew quickly — showing that it didn’t fool the harmless bacteria. This early experiment shows that the material can selectively kill dangerous bacteria, but it’s too early to start using the material in hospitals.
“This is a nice approach and they’ve shown in principle that it works,” said Christopher Batich, a biomedical engineer in the US, who did not work on the study. While he’s excited about the results, he added that the real world is more complicated than this experiment. “You’d have to work with real bacteria and real wounds to see if it makes a difference,” he said.
Jenkins and his colleagues are back at work improving the material. In the not-so-distant future, this kind of antibacterial bandage may move from the laboratory to the hospital bed — and give burned victims a fighting chance against infection.
