A TV program

A: Do you often watch TV?

B: Yes, I do. I watch TV everyday. It is my way to relax.

C: No, I don’t. I only watch TV occasionally. I spend more time reading and talking with friends.

A: What kind of programs do you like?

B: I like news best. I watch the news program everyday at 7 p.m. sharp. I think the program can keep me informed of the important things happening in the world. I also like to watch sports programs. I think sports games are very exciting.

A: How much time do you spend watching TV everyday?

B: It depends. On weekends I watch more. Sometimes there are good movies on the movie channel. I like watching movies. When I know I don’t have to get up early the next morning I watch TV unit quite late at night.

A: Do you think watching TV is a good way to spend your spare time?

B: Yes. I think so. Watching TV is very relaxing. You don’t have to think hard. You can also learn something from those TV programs. It is a fast way to get information and knowledge.

C: No, I don’t think it is a good way to spend your spare time. I think watching TV is a waste of time. People are just passive viewers when watching TV. Gradually they will lose the ability to think. If you spend a lot of time watching TV, you will have less time to communicate with other family members and friends. People will become more distant from each other.

How often should you brush your teeth?

Ideally, brushing should be carried out after every meal. This is because acid formation occurs within 30 minutes of consumption of food. However, this may be difficult most of the time because hardly any of us carry our toothbrush around. Brushing once a day would be enough to prevent dental disease if it is very thorough but the doctor’s suggestion is twice a day. Always ensure that you brush before going to bed. A study on oral hygiene practices among Malaysian adults has shown that over 90% of them claimed to have brushed their tooth at least twice a day. Yet a national study on the health of their gums indicate that over 90% of them have gum disease though the most of them are in the mild form. The answer lies in the effectiveness of brushing. Therefore, the effectiveness of brushing is more important than the frequency of brushing.

How to Keep Fit

Ten years ago I used to be very fit. I cycled to work and I got a lot of exercise at the weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better. But the hours were a lot longer, too. I bought a car and drove to work every day. And I began to take people out to lunch. “expense account” lunches. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for walks at the weekend because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more. There’s a lot of stress in a job like mine. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, then I started filling the glass to the top. Then I had another glass, and then another. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago I had a heart attach. At first I just couldn’t believe it. “I’m too young,” I said. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. I was in hospital a few days and they did a lot of tests. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He told me to do a lot of other things, too. But I don’t see how I can do some of them and keep my job. For example, he advised me to work less, and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!

Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?
