I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I’ll never forget.

I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock (货物) and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Astronaut Jim Voss has enjoyed many memorable moments in his career，including three space flights and one space walk. But he recalls with special fondness a decidedly earthbound(为地球引力所束缚的)experience in the summer of 1980 when he participated in the NASA ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Voss， then a science teacher at West Poin，was assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Center's propulsion(推进) lab in Alabama to analyze why a hydraulic fuel pump seal (液压燃料泵的密封圈)on the space shuttle(航天飞机) was working so well when previous seals had failed. It was a seemingly tiny problem among the vast complexities of running the space program. Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them.

“I worked a bit with NASA engineers，” says Voss， “but I did it mostly by an analysis. I used a handheld calculator， not a computer， to do a thermodynamic(热力学的) analysis.” At the end of the summer，he，like the other NASA ASEE fellows working at Marshall，summarized his findings in a formal presentation and detailed paper. 　　　 People needed calendars to help them know when to plant crops and when to celebrate religious holidays. The ancient Greeks and Chinese had a solution. They produced calendars that included extra months every nineteen years.

　　　 The ancient Romans had a different solution. In the year forty-six, the Roman ruler Julius Caesar made a new calendar. The Julian calendar included an extra day every four years. But there was a problem. The Julian year was just over eleven minutes longer than the cycle of the seasons. In fifteen eighty-two, Pope Gregory the Thirteenth established a new calendar to keep a better record of the days. Pope Gregory was the religious leader of most of Europe. He decided that years that could be divided by four would add a day. However, years that ended in two zeros and that could not be evenly divided be four hundred would not be leap years. For example, the years seventeen hundred, eighteen hundred and nineteen hundred were not leap years. But the years sixteen hundred and two thousand were leap year.

　　　 So leap years are years with three hundred sixty-six days, instead of the usual three hundred sixty-five. This extra day is added to the calendar on February twenty-ninth, sometimes known as　 leap day. People born on leap day may be called “leapings”. 　　　 Want your kids to sleep better at night? Turn off the TV. That’s the conclusion of a new study from Fin;land showing that merely having a television on in the house, even if the kids aren’t actively watching it, can be enough to disturb their sleep patterns significantly.

　　　 Childcare specialists are very specific about the amount of hours whey should be watching. But few people have looked closely at what happens when a TV is simply on in the background – either being watched by an adult or, just as commonly, by no one at all.

In a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research, Finnish investigators tried to get at that question, surveying 321 parents of 5-and 6-year-old children to determine the families’ viewing patterns and the effect this had on the kids sleep habits.

　　　 All of the families in the study watched a pretty fair amount of TV, with at least one television in the house switched on for an average of 4.2 hrs. per day. On average a child actively watched TV for 1.4 of those hours and was passively exposed to TV for at least another 1.4 hrs. In 21% of the homes, the kids had a TV of their own in the bedroom.

　　　 All that exposure, it turns out, was doing the kids’ sleep patterns no favor. In general, the greater the number of the hours of passive or active viewing was, the more problems young children had falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up in the morning and avoiding fatigue during the day.

But not all TV viewing was equal. Watching TV lone or at bedtime had grester negative impact on sleep. Unusually high passive exposure --- 2.1 hrs. per day or more --- was particularly associated with sleep disturbances.
