阅读理解。
    Elena jogged with her dad in some empty lots (小块地) at the edge of town. These out-of-the-way lots were
good places to jog. But the lots were fuIl of rocks and rubbish.
   One day, Elena saw a sign on the lots. It said, "New City Park." Elena was excited. Maybe the park would have
a jogging trail!
Elena told her parents about the sign.
    "I read about the park in the newspaper," said Elena's father. "The city wants volunteers to help clean the area. Then the city will build a soccer field and a playground."
    "Will they build a jogging trail?" Elena asked.
    "No,the paper didn't mention a jogging trail."
    "Well,perhaps if I help clean up the lots, they'll put in a jogging trail," said Elena.
    On Saturday Elena went to the lots. Many adults were working there.Some were picking up rubbish. Some
were moving rocks.
    "I want to volunteer, "Elena told a man."What can I do?"
    "This is not a job for children, "said the man."You'd better go home."
    Elena looked around.She could carry rubbish. She could move rocks. A lady was pulling a bag of rubbish.
Elena saw a box of rubbish bags. She took an empty bag.
    "I'll take this bag to the Dumpster," said Elena. "Here's a new bag."
    "Thanks," said the lady. "Keep those new bags coming."
    Elena dragged rubbish bags. She told everyone she was glad to help build the park. She explained that she
hoped the park would have a jogging trail. 
    Elena went to the area every week. Soon everyone knew her and she told everyone how wonderful a jogging
trail would be.
    Soon the volunteers cleared the lots. The city could start building.The mayor (市长) gave a speech. He showed
a drawing of the new park.He told them about the soccer field and the baseball diamond. There would be picnic
tables. There would be a playground. The park would even have basketball courts. There was no sign of a jogging
trail. The mayor thanked the volunteers. Then he asked if they had any suggestions. The volunteers said they
wanted to build a jogging trail around the park. They told the mayor how helpful Elena had been and how she
wanted a jogging trail.The mayor said, "A jogging trail won't be hard to build. Let's do it!" Everyone clapped and
cheered. Elena cheered loudest of all.
    The mayor thanked the volunteers. Then he asked if they had any suggestions. The volunteers said they wanted
to build a jogging trail around the park.
    They told the mayor how helpful Elena had been and how she wanted a jogging trail. The mayor said,  "A
jogging trail won't be hard to build. Let's do it!"
    Everyone clapped and cheered. Elena cheered loudest of all.

                                              Group Helps Others to Build Houses
     TEPETITAN, EL SALVADOR- Evinor Mira is only sixteen years old, but he is working as hard as an
adult man to help his family get a good house. Evinor lives with his mother and his little brother and sister in
Tepetitan, EL Salvador. His father is dead, and the family is very poor. Their house is a small one of mud
(泥土) and sticks, so Evinor is working with an organization called Habitat for Humanity to build a new home.
     Habitat for Humanity helps people who need houses but do not have much money. Each family buys the
house through monthly payments (每月付款). Their payments help build more houses because banks can then
lend money to other families. Habitat for Humanity volunteers help to build the house, but the families must do

     Every morning, Evinor begins at 7:00. He and the volunteer workers from Habitat carry boards (木板),
pound nails (敲钉子), and pour concrete (混凝土) all day, six days a week. The other workers can go home
and rest at 4:00 p.m., but Evinor's day isn't over. He rides on a bus for forty minutes to go to school in another
town. He is in high school and attends classes for four hours every evening. At 9:00 p.m. he has to walk two
and a half hours to get home because there aren't any buses so late at night. Around 11:30 p.m. he arrives
home and does his homework. On Sundays, Evinor works with the Habitat organization to help other families
get houses, too.
     Evinor does not have the easy life of many teenagers, but he doesn't mind working so hard. He is proud
that he can help his own family and others in his community (社区) to have better lives.

     It was early morning. Peter Corbett helped Mark Wellman out of his wheelchair and onto the ground. They
stood before El Captain, a huge rock almost 1.2 kilometers high. Mark had long dreamed to climb El Captain
when he was a child. At the age of twenty-one, he had fallen while climbing mountain, losing his legs. But he
never lost his love for life.
     Mark knew he couldn't finish the climb alone, but his friend Peter would be there to lend a helping hand.
They thought it would take seven days to reach the top. Now Peter climbed about 30 meters up and hit a piton
(岩钉) into the rock. Fastening (拴紧) one end of a 50-meter rope (绳子) to the piton, he let the other end of
the rope fall down. Mark caught the rope and fastened it to his belt. He next reached above his head and
fastened a T-bar (丁字铁) to the rope. Mark took a deep breath, pushed the T-bar up almost as far as his arms
could reach, and began the first pull-up. High above, Peter let out a cheer, "You're on your way."
     For the first four days the two men progressed upward (向上) without accident. But on the fifth day, a
very strong wind began to blow, making it hard for Mark to hold on to his rope. But Mark kept on pushing up
the T-bar and pulling himself up.
     It took them one day more than they had expected. But as the two heads appeared the group of people
waiting on the top went wild with joy.
     Mark Wellman showed that if you set your heart and mind on something, no wall is too high, no dream
