Boxing Day
This holiday, which is observed on December 26, is a unique part of the Christmas season in Great Britain, as well as other Commonwealth nations．Boxing Day comes from a tradition that began in the Middle Ages more than 800 years ago．On this day, English churches would open their ‘alms box’ and distribute its contents to needy members of the community．It was also a day for servants to celebrate the holidays with their families, having usually worked the day before．Today, Boxing Day is one of the twenty-two paid holidays received by most working Brits．Most people now spend Christmas Day with their family and reserve Boxing Day for exchanging gifts with friends．Although the government shuts down for the day, cinemas and theatres are open．
Queen’s Telegram
In the United States, if you make it to the ripe old age of 101 or 102, Willard Scott will wish you happy birthday on national television．In England, the queen herself will send her congratulations．This fairly new custom is known as "the Queen’s Telegram" and assures centenarians （people at least 100 years old） that they will receive a birthday telegram from the queen on their one-hundredth birthday．The telegram is so longed for by some Brits that one 98-year-old woman was recently proven to have faked her age by two years just to receive the telegram．
High Tea
High tea was first enjoyed by the English working class during the 1700s．This ritual （仪式） began as a practical attempt to hold off hunger pains between breakfast and supper, as eating just two daily meals was common at the time．It was called “high” tea because it was usually taken sitting on top stools in a tea shop or standing at a counter or buffet table．Today, high tea has become a more elegant and popular tradition that is practiced in fine hotels and restaurants around the world．
Public Houses
Visiting a pub is one of Britain’s oldest forms of entertainment．The idea for the first public houses was brought to Britain thousands of years ago by conquering Roman army．The first pubs served only wine, but after the discovery of hops（啤酒花） in the fourteenth century, pubs began to serve mainly beer and ale（麦芽酒）, as they do today．
British pubs operate between 11 a．m．and 11 p．m．every day except Sunday, when they must close at 10:30 p．m．The drinking age in Britain is eighteen, but fourteen-year-olds may enter a pub unaccompanied if they order a meal．

Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patients to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed by greater needs; the need to protect patients from brutal news, to uphold a promise of secrecy or to advance the public interest.
What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should doctors reject that he is ill, or minimize the gravity of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?
Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patients’ own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones.
Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them of risks destroys their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate faster, perhaps even commit suicide.
But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians, a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanely conveyed, helps patients cope with illness; help them tolerate pain better with less medicine, and even recover faster after surgery.
There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious consequences seem avoidable only through deception. Yet the public has every reason to know the professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

3. Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
4. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.
If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “ What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申请)colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “ The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.
Your high school experiences will undoubtedly be very important to you. It is the last step before you begin your life as an adult. Freshman year of high school is the time to make your interests and activities to fit who you are. As a freshman, challenge yourself in and out of classroom. Many people think a telephone is a necessity. But I think it is a pest (有害的事物) and a time waste. Very often you find it impossible to escape from it. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation or when you are just going out, or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it? You are not. You think there may be some important news or message for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you ever rushed crippling from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of sudden emergency—illness, accident, or fire? Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.
I think perhaps I had better try to justify (证明是有理的) myself by trying to prove that what I like is good. I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a wealthy and powerful businessperson, for instance, or badly ill and had to lie in bed, I might find a telephone a necessity. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car as necessity. Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent: one is mechanical invention, the other literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them, for I have had just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important.
