Dear Peter,
I¡¯m writing to tell you something about e-hongbao, that is very popular in China.
E-hongbao is actual a kind of lucky money from and to relatives and friends during festivals or in special occasions. For many young people, grabbing e-hongbao on our mobile phones is a fairly exciting activity. Unlike the tradition of elders give lucky money to children, over half of the people sending e-hongbao is in their 20s. It¡¯s just for fun but giving best wishes, while the sum of money matters a little. In a word, e-hongbao is bringing new color to the old tradition.
Now I¡¯m concerned about the safe of online payment, and rules and regulations needed to be improved to guarantee its operation.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

The kindly ¡°Chinese Fortune Grandpa¡± wearing Han Chinese clothing and holding a fortune bag debuted £¨ÁÁÏࣩ at the Imperial Ancestral Shrine in Beijing on the day after Christmas. The final image of the Chinese gift-giver was selected through a global design competition against ¡°Santa Claus¡±, according to a report by Guangming Daily.
Many Chinese cities have been filled with Christmas neon lights, Christmas songs, Christmas trees, and the images of ¡°Santa Claus¡±in recent days. As a matter of fact, foreign festivals are becoming more popular than certain traditional Chinese festivals among the Chinese people, particularly the youth. ¡°Certain traditional festivals have died out because people have forgotten their spiritual meanings, ¡±said noted writer Feng Jicai. More and more Chinese people are beginning to exchange gifts on Valentine's Day and Christmas. However, many of them know nothing about Chinese New Year pictures or sugarcoated figurines£¨Ð¡ÌÇÈË£©, and have never heard suona music. Certain folk customs on the Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, and other traditional festivals have gradually disappeared. Under such circumstances, even the ¡°Chinese Fortune Grandpa¡± is unlikely to defeat ¡°Santa Claus¡±.
However, it is not a bad thing to some extent. It constantly reminds people to restore the ¡°true face¡± of traditional festivals. China has listed traditional Tomb Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival as legal holidays, which brings more paid leaves to the public, and helps to awake the public awareness of traditional festivals.
In modern society, festival is a carrier of culture and its meaning largely depends on their understandings and usages by people. Compared with foreign festivals, traditional Chinese festivals are not inferior £¨´ÎÓÚ£© in cultural meanings, but lack of fashion sought by modern people. If people do not appreciate the historical culture contained by traditional festivals, and only take pleasure-seeking as the most important, the significance of traditional festivals will fade away and the inheritance £¨¼Ì³Ð£© of fine traditional culture will be cut off.
1.The second paragraph implies that ________.
A. traditional festivals should co-exist with foreign festivals
B. all the Chinese festivals are disappearing in the near future
C. western festivals are constantly impacting on our festivals
D. the Chinese people have the public awareness of traditional festivals
2.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. an image designed by the Chinese people will be displayed
B. the Chinese gift-giver was intended to symbolize traditional culture
C. many foreigners know nothing about Chinese festivals
D. the Chinese are beginning to exchange gifts on the Mid-Autumn Festival
3.Many Chinese youth dislike traditional festivals because they think ________.
A. traditional festivals are out of fashion now
B. the historical culture is more difficult to understand
C. western festivals contain more cultural meanings
D. the inheritance will cut off their contact with western festivals
4.What would be the best title of the passage?
A. Gone are Chinese Traditional Festivals
B. True Face of Chinese Traditional Culture
C. Foreign Festivals Popular with Chinese
D. Chinese Fortune Grandpa VS. Santa Claus

Generally speaking, college graduation brings both the satisfaction of academic achievement and the expectation of a well-paid job. But for 6,000 graduates at San Jose State this year, there¡¯s uncertainty as they enter one of the worst job markets in decades.
Ryan Stewart has a freshly minted degree in religious studies, but no job prospects. ¡°You look at everybody¡¯s parents and neighbors, and they¡¯re getting laid off and don¡¯t have jobs,¡± said Stewart. ¡°Then you look at the young people just coming into the workforce.., it¡¯s just scary.¡±
When those graduates entered college, the future never looked brighter. But in the four years they¡¯ve been here, the world outside has changed dramatically. ¡°Those were the exciting times, lots of dot-com opportunities, exploding offers, students getting top dollar with lots of benefits,¡± said Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge, of the San Jose State Career Centre. ¡°Times have changed. It¡¯s a new market. The job situation is grim (ÑϾþµÄ) now.¡± Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge ought to know. She runs the San Jose State Career Centre, (it is) sort of a crossroads between college and the real world. Allmen-Vinnidge says students who do find jobs after college have done their homework. ¡°The typical graduate who does have a job offer started working on it two years ago. They¡¯ve postured themselves well during the summer. They¡¯ve had several internships (ʵϰ) ,¡± she said. And they¡¯ve majored in one of the few fields that are still hot¡ªlike chemical engineering, accounting or nursing¡ªwhere average starting salaries have actually increased over last year. Other popular fields (like information systems management, computer science, and political science) have seen big declines in starting salaries.
Ryan Stewart (he had hoped to become a teacher) may just end up going back to school. ¡°I¡¯d like to teach college some day and that requires more schooling, which would be great in a bad economy,¡± he said.
It is true more students are able to receive college education. It is also true that they will have to face fiercer competition in the job market as they graduate. It becomes harder and harder for the current graduates to get a foothold in job markets, but many of them have no choice but to follow the beaten track. To some students a degree may not be ticket to instant wealth. For now, they can only hope its value will increase over time.
1.What can we learn about Ryan Stewart?
A. He is a teacher.
B. He majored in religious studies.
C. He found a job as soon as he graduated.
D. He is going back to school.
2.Which of the following did NOT happen in the past four years?
A. Dot-corn opportunities decreased.
B. Salaries in chemical engineering increased.
C. The number of teaching jobs increased.
D. The number of jobs with benefits decreased.
3.What does Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge mean when she says students ¡°have done their homework¡±?
A. The have found full-time jobs as their future career before graduation.
B. The have gone to summer school for further studies.
C. They are good students who have finished their homework on time.
D. They have spent time preparing themselves to find a job.
4.What¡¯s the meaning of the phrase ¡°get a foothold¡± in the last paragraph?
A. Gain a safe position from which further advances can be made.
B. Find a place where you can stand.
C. Walk with steady footsteps.
D. Make great progress in a particular area or in a certain job.

Freshmen anywhere may be nervous about university life£®Here, three pieces of advice are for them.
Listen but don't be silent
The world is held in students¡¯ hand via smart phones. Thus, they may consider lecture listening less important. 1. It forces students to face the difficulties of training a deep attentiveness. Unsurprisingly, students find it hard to speak out, ask questions or for points of clarification. They don't want to appear foolish or incapable. However, there is no such thing as a foolish question. Teachers are there to help you understand. This also goes for seminars and workshops. 2.
Read and buy books
3. There're so many useful online sources today, but the habit of reading books, especially whole books, is something being lost. Buy your own books£®There are many bargains to be found on used-book websites or through Amazon. Being a book lover and buyer will help any student get the most out of their education.
4.
As a student, you don't just have to learn to listen and become an active reader: you also have to become an academic writer. Written work at college level cannot be done at the last minute or in a rush. It takes time. Turn to your teachers. If they will read draft essays then make sure you can get feedback£¨·´À¡£© ahead of the final submission. 5.
Students who get feedback on their work always do better than those who do not. It is one of the few educational laws that holds true in all cases.
A. Don't try to do it all the night before.
B. However, a lecture is a listening workout.
C. Thinking clearly cannot be done in a rush.
D. So train your ear, listen carefully, but don't be silent.
E. Reading is the most important thing that any student does.
F. Re-writing has proved to be the turning point in one's degree.
G. If they won't read drafts, then see them to run through your ideas£®
