    Chinese and Russian armed forces on Wednesday began a five-day joint military drill aimed at boosting their troops’ capability（提高部队能力）in fighting against terrorist. They will conduct a joint antiterror military exercise beginning July 22.
    The exercise, named “Peace Mission-2009”, will be carried out in Russia’s Far East area and the Shenyang Military Area Command in northeast China, according to the two countries’ defense authorities. It will last five days.
    About 1,300 people from the army and air force of each side will participate in the exercise. The Russian forces would also send an airborne assault unit(空降突击连) to participate in the exercise, according to the Defense Ministry.
    The more than 2,600 soldiers have conducted joint exercise before. From July 23 to 26, the troops will conduct the exercise at a training base in the Shenyang Military Area Command where theater-level command headquarters(司令部) of both sides will be established.
    The deputy chief of general staff of Chinese armed forces Ma Xiaotian told reporters this morning that the Chinese military is well prepared for Sunday’s joint anti-terror drill with Russia in a training base in Baicheng, Jilin Province.
    The other four member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Takistan, Uzbekistan and the SCO’s secretariat will send military observers.
    China, Russia and other member states of the SCO held two similar anti-terrorism exercises under the name of “Peace Mission” in 2005 and 2007 respectively.
    The exercise was not targeted at any particular third party, but would show the abilities and resolution of both sides to jointly deal with various kinds of security threats and crack down on terrorist, separatist and extremist forces, the spokesman said.

    Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty．In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old．

    Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older．One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions．They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences．
    Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry．
    The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single．But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age．
    The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older．However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men．

    On April 24th, another natural disaster—the oil spill(泄露) in the Gulf of Mexico, happened.     CANBERRA(Reuters)—Australia’s kangaroos are genetically similar to humans and may have first evolved in China, Australian researchers said Tuesday.
    Scientists said they had for the first time mapped the genetic code of the Australian marsupials(有袋类)and found much of it was similar to the genome for humans, the government backed Center of Excellence for Kangaroo Genomics said.
    “There are a few differences, we have a few more of this, a few less of that, but they are the same genes and a lot of them are in the same order,”center Director Jenny Graves told reporters in Melbourne.
    “We thought they’d be completely scrambled, but they’re not. There is great chunks of the human genome which is sitting right there in the kangaroo genome,” Graves said, according to AAP.
    Humans and knagaroos last shared an ancestor at least 150 million years ago, the researchers found, while mice and humans separated and went in different ways from one another only 70 million years ago.
    Kangaroos first evolved in China, but migrated across the America to Australia and Antarctica, they said.
    “Kangaroos are hugely informative about what we were like 150 million years ago,” Graves said.

    The Oregonian(俄勒冈报) is the daily newspaper for the state of Oregon where the Hagens live. Since it is published in the largest city, which is Portland, most of the readers live within 50 miles of Portland.

However, the advertisements are nearly as many pages as the news on Sunday so the entire paper is more than four times larger than the daily paper.

    SURPRISE, surprise---David Beckham is in the news again! Sure, the England football star was never one to shy away from the headlines. But this time it seems people are talking as much about what Beckham is not doing as what he is.
    Beckham won’t be playing for England at the 2010 World Cup in South AfricA． An injury he picked up while playing for AC Milan will likely rule the 34-year-old out for four months. It could be a sad end to the career of a player who has given his all to England since his debut (首次登场) in 1996. But rather than feeling sorry for the loss, some people are finally calling for us to move on from the Beckham obsession (着迷).
    “The romantic wish of him seizing the day and inspiring England to glory was poppycock (胡扯),” according to an editorial in the Guardian.
