Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket--- anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th  birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition(探险) towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite(冻疮), ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled(雪橇) up and over rocky ice.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.

When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, "Well, it's so-and-so's fault,"or "I know I'm late, but it's not my fault; the car broke down. " It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don't rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague(同事) fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on "whose fault it is." Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

I learned all about taking responsibility from my mother’s tough love. My mom had a wonderful way of helping you        up and realize that your life is going to be what you make it.
She had this circular way of      you took responsibility for your decisions and the person you would      . She would say,“ It' s your      .”      “What you want and what you get are sometimes two       different things.” And then, “No one ever said life was fair.” And she would      these comments together in such a way that you could never      an argument, and yet, the      was that you realized your life is going to be what you make it.
So I might go to my mom and say, “I’d like to      football”. And she would say, “Well, it's your life. If you want to go out there and get      and hurt and break your knees and limp around the rest of your life, that' s fine.” That is      I would say, “Well, you know, that won’t       . I' m really fast.” And she would reply, “Well, we don’t really have the money.” And then I would     , “Yes but that' s not fair.” And she would reply, “ Well, life isn’t      .” Then I would say, “But I’ve been itching to." And she would reply, “Yes, but what you want and what you get are usually two entirely different things.”
It was the combination of these       that allowed my mother to lead me down the right path under her      but let me feel as if I was making the decisions      my own. The sum total of that    was, in the end, you’re      for the life you lead. That' s the best advice I’ve ever gotten.

When Joan gave birth to the first boy in her family in three generations, she and her husband were overjoyed. So were her parents. Joan expected her elder sister, Sally, to be just as delighted as them. Joan had always admired Sally--the beauty and the star of the family--and felt happy about her achievements.
But since the baby's arrival, the sisters have become distant. Joan feels hurt for Sally seems completely uninterested in her baby. Sally, who has no children, claims that her younger sister "acts as if no one ever had a baby before."
Neither Sally nor Joan understands that the real cause of the current coldness is that their family roles have suddenly changed to the opposite. Finally Joan seems to be better than her elder sister--and Sally doesn't like it! Their distance may be temporary, but it shows that childhood competition don't fade easily as ages grow. It can remain powerful in relationships throughout life.
In a study of the University of Cincinnati, 65 men and women between ages 25 and 93 were asked how they felt about their brothers and sisters. Nearly 75 percent admitted having hidden competitive feelings. In a few cases, these emotions were so strong as to have affected their entire lives.
Many adult brothers and sisters are close, supportive--yet still tend to compete. Two brothers I know turn into killers when on opposite sides of a tennis net. Off the court, they are the best of friends. My own younger sister can't wait to tell me when I've put on weight. However, she's a terrible cook and that pleases me; I tease her when she comes to dinner. Happily, despite these small failings, we have been an important resource for each other.
In between the very competitive and the generally supportive children lie those who say that no friendship should survive. Some brothers and sisters stay at arm's length, but never give up competition completely. Why do these puzzling, unproductive, often painful relationships continue to exist?

小题3:Why does the author's sister often tell her when she's put on weight?
A.Because she wants the author to go on a diet.
B.Because she wants the author to stop calling her a bad cook.
C.Because she wants to make fun of the author's weight.
D.Because she wants to be honest with the author.
小题4:The underlined sentence means that although some brothers and sisters       .
A.live near each other, they still have competitions

My job was to make classroom observations and encourage a training program that would enable students to feel good about themselves and take charge of their lives. Donna was one of the volunteer teachers who participated in this       .
One day, I entered Donna’s classroom, took a seat in the back of the room and       . All the students were working        a task. The student next to me was filling her page with “I Can’ts.” “I can’t kick the soccer ball.” “I can’t get Debbie to like me.” Her page was half full and she showed no        of stopping. I walked down the row and found        was writing sentences, describing things they couldn’t do.
By this time the activity aroused my       , so I decided to check with the teacher to see what was going on        I noticed she too was busy writing. “I can’t get John’s mother to come for a parents’ meeting.” I felt it best not to       .
After another ten minutes, the students were        to fold the papers in half and bring them to the front. They placed their “I Can’t” statements into an empty shoebox. Then Donna      hers. She put the lid on the box, tucked it under her arm and headed out the door. Students followed the teacher. I followed the students. Halfway down the hallway Donna got a shovel from the tool house, and then marched the students to the farthest corner of the playground. There they began to       . The box of “I Can’ts” was placed at the        of the hole and then quickly covered with dirt. At this point Donna announced, “Boys and girls, please join hands and        your heads.” They quickly formed a circle around the grave.
Donna delivered the eulogy (悼词). “Friends, we gathered here today to        the memory of ‘I Can’t.’ He is        by his brothers and sisters ‘I Can’ and ‘I Will’. May ‘I Can’t’ rest in       . Amen!”
She turned the students        and marched them back into the classroom. They celebrated the        of “I Can’t”. Donna cut a large tombstone from paper. She wrote the words “I Can’t” at the top and the date at the bottom, then hung it in the classroom. On those rare occasions when a student        and said, “I Can’t,” Donna        pointed to the paper tombstone. The student then remembered that “I Can’t” was dead and chose other statement.
