16.Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships.For example,in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure.Yet it also has other uses.A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.A smile may show love or politeness.It can also hide true feelings.It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures.For example,many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities).Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough.In Southeast Asian culture,a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings.Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感),but we should not attempt to"read"people from another culture as we would"read"someone from our own culture.The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.Rather,there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted.For example,in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends,Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States.People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others.The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different.If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of"reading"the other person incorrectly.

27.What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?C
A.Love.B.Politeness.C.Joy.D.Thankfulness.
28.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile canB.
A.show friendliness to strangers
B.be used to hide true feelings
C.be used in the wrong places
D.show personal habits
29.What should we do before attempting to"read"people?A
A.Understand their cultural backgrounds.
B.Learn about their relations with others.
C.Find out about their past experience.
D.Figure out what they will do next.
30.What would be the best title for the test?C
A.Cultural Differences
B.Smiles and Relationship
C.Facial Expressiveness
D.Habits and Emotions.

分析 文章通篇阐述了面部表情的种种表现形式,以及文化之间的差异导致的面部表情的含义不同.

解答 27.C 细节理解题.由"For example,in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure"可知,在美国文化中,一般地说,微笑是快乐的表情.此处joy是pleasure的同义词.故选C.
28.B 写作意图题.根据文章第一段中的"It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures."可知这是一个中心句,其后用例证法阐述:微笑能隐藏真正的感情.它常常导致跨文化间的困惑.其中越南人讲故事的例子就是为了说明这一观点.故选B.
29.A 判断推理题.根据文章最后一段中的"The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of"reading"the other person incorrectly."

5.Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city?In order to answer this question,we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area.Not all historical buildings are  attractive.However,there may be other reasons-for example,economic(经济的) reasons-why  they should be preserved.So,let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people.What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view,new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style.Indeed,there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings.As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much,it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in,but the same can be said of some old buildings too.Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas.I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings.I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward.If we always reproduced what was there before,we would all still be living in caves.Thus,I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different,even though that might be the more risky choice.

24.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?C
A.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
C.Some of them are not attractive.
D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
25.Which of the following is true according to the author?A
A.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.We should reproduce the same old building
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
26.By"move things forward"in the last paragraph,the author probably means"B".
A.destroy old buildings
B.choose new architectural styles
C.put things in a different place
D.respect people's feelings for historical buildings
27.What is the main purpose of the passage?B
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
