The koala(考拉) is possibly one of the best known Australian animals, and is found in four states: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

The word “koala” comes from an Australian word meaning “no drink”. Sometimes people call them “koala bears” but koala is not a bear. It belongs to a special group of Australian mammals, called marsupial(有袋类). Female marsupials have a pouch where the baby animals live after they are born.

Koalas have soft, thick, gray or brown fur on their backs. The fur on the stomach is white. The Koala in the south have thicker fur than those in the north because of the cold winters. However, the koalas in the northern part live in warm to hot weather most of the year, so they have thinner fur.A koala has a large nose and round ears. Koalas don’t have tails. Adult koalas weigh between 7kg and 14 kg.

Koalas spend nearly all their time in the trees. They sleep most of the day, but feed and move from tree to tree mainly at night. The reason koala sleep for much of the day is because their food, eucalyptus(桉树) leaves, are so hard that they need a lot of energy(能量;精力)to digest. Sleeping saves energy.

Each koala has a home made up of several trees that they visit regularly. They normally do not visit another koala’s home trees except that a male is looking for a female to mate with.

One day, a patient came to see me. He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux (胃酸倒流), a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans, a marked increase in recent years. Reflux can lead to esophageal (食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s. The drugs we use to treat reflux don’t always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term.

What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one, our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked: dinnertime. Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients’ evening meals has become later and later. Dinner — already pushed back by longer work hours — is often further delayed by activities such as shopping and exercise.

In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating. A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too. Her nightly routine (常规) included a 9 p.m. dinner with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed.

She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year. “For the first two months, I just hated you,” she told me, “and for the next two months, I was having some trouble eating. I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer.” Then she added, “You know, we’re the reason that it’s not so easy to get 6 p.m. reservations (预约) at the good restaurants anymore.”

To stop the increase in reflux disease, we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed. As for my waiter patient? I told him to eat dinner before 7 p.m. Within six weeks, his reflux was gone.

1.The disease the waiter caught is _____.

A. on the rise

B. easy to control

C. unusual in America

D. the most dangerous cancer

2.What does the underlined word “overlooked” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Talked about a lot.

B. Paid no attention to.

C. Carefully looked into.

D. Taken into consideration.

3.Why did the woman patient hate the author?

A. He spoke of her dead father and uncle.

B. He asked her to change her eating habits.

C. He couldn’t find a way to deal with her problem.

D. He couldn’t make her healthy again within a year.

4.The author writes the text to tell us _____.

A. not to work late at night

B. to avoid eating at restaurants

C. unhealthy foods cause cancer

D. the danger of eating late at night

About five years ago, an American electrical engineer named Scott Brusaw and his wife Julie came up with the idea of putting solar panels on the ground rather than the roof. Then they began to develop the Solar Roadway specially for a new type of cars-eco-cars. The Solar Roadway is an intelligent road that provides clean renewable energy using power from the sun while providing safer driving conditions, along with power and data delivery. They predict that the Solar Roadway will pay for itself through the generation of electricity along with other forms of income and that the same amount of money that is being used to build and resurface current roads can be used to build the Solar Roadsays.

Each Solar Road Panel measures roughly 4 meters and contains a microprocessor(微处理器)that monitors and controls the panel, while communicating with neighboring panels and the vehicles traveling overhead. The inventors suggest that this provides a communication device every 4 meters on every road which could be used for example to warn drivers of cars which are moving across a centre line and various other speed control problems. The top of the Solar Road panels is made of super-strong glass that would offer vehicles the tractions(抓地力)they need.

According to the inventors, the Solar Roadway creates and carries clean renewable electricity and therefore electric vehicles can be recharged at any conveniently located rest stop, or at any business that has paved Solar Road Panels in their parking lots.

The inventors say their Solar Roadway has many functions and advantages from main roads to drivewasys, parking lots, bike paths, sidewalks and runways. The Federal Highway Administration has given Brusaw $100,000 to develop the invention and Brusaw hopes to build a smart-road parking lot in the coming spring.

1.In the inventors’ opinion, the Solar Roadway______.

A. is too expensive to build at present

B. costs no more money than current roads

C. can provide as many data as present computers

D. will bring them a large sum of money

2.The underlined word“they”in Paragraph 2 refers to______.

A. the panels B. the inventors C. the researchers D. the vehicles

3.The Solar Roadway includes all the following advantages EXCEPT_______.

A. providing safer driving conditions

B. helping drivers communicate with each other while driving

C. creating and carrying clean renewable electricity

D. warning drivers of various speed control problems

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Solar-powered smart road of the future

B. The great changes on the roadway

C. The influence the Solar Roadway has on people

D. The Solar Road-a much faster road

The Man Booker Prize for Fiction is awarded for a novel written by a writer from the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland and it aims to represent the very best in contemporary fiction. The prize was originally called the Booker-McConnell Prize, which was the name of the company that sponsored it, though it was better-known as simply the ‘Booker Prize’. In 2002, the Man Group became the sponsor and they chose the new name, keeping ‘Booker’.

Publishers can submit books for consideration for the prize, but the judges can also ask for books to be submitted that they think should be included. Firstly, the Advisory Committee gives advice if there have been any changes to the rules for the prize and selects the people who will judge the books. The judging panel changes every year and usually a person is only a judge once.

Great efforts are made to ensure that the judging panel is balanced in terms of gender(性别) and professions within the industry, so that a writer, a critic, an editor and an academic are chosen along with a well-known person from wider society. However, when the panel of judges has been decided, they are left to make their own decisions. Meanwhile, the prize sponsor has no further right to take part in any more.

The Man Booker judges include critics, writers and academics to maintain the consistent quality of the prize and its influence is such that the winner will almost certainly see the sales increase considerably, in addition to the£50,000 that comes with the prize.

1.Who can submit books to the prize?

A. Judges. B. Writers.

C. Readers. D. Sponsors.

2.Why is the prize named the Man Booker Prize?

A. Because the prize is given to writers from the Commonwealth.

B. Because the prize was known as simply the ‘Booker Prize’.

C. Because the prize is sponsored by the Man Group and they kept the name.

D. Because the prize is aimed to award the very best contemporary fiction.

3.Which task can be done by the Advisory Committee?

A. Changing the rules for the prize on their own.

B. Selecting the judging committee.

C. Making decisions on who is the winner.

D. Submitting books for consideration for the prize.

4.The consistent quality of the prizes is guaranteed by ________.

A. the prize money

B. the gender of the judges

C. the make-up of the panel of judges

D. the increase in sales of the winner
