Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the websites you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it’s likely that some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a husband or wife, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21st century equivalent (相等物) of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread pieces you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found a serious depression about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny part of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessanfro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (优惠券).

But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It’s like health. When you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.

1. What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?

A. There should be a distance even between friends.

B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.

C. Friends should open their hearts to each other.

D. There should be fewer disagreements between friends.

2. Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret”?

A. People leave tracks around when using modern technology.

B. Modern society has finally developed into an open society.

C. There are always people who are curious about others’ affairs.

D. Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.

3. What do most Americans do about privacy protection?

A. They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.

B. They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.

C. They rely more and more on electronic devices.

D. They use various loyalty cards for business deals.

4. According to the passage, privacy is like health because __________.

A. its importance is rarely understood

B. people don’t treasure it until they lose it

C. it is something that can easily be lost

D. people will make every effort to keep it

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight, immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3: 00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle waved with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.

1.The author had expected the train trip to be _________.

A. adventurous B. pleasant

C. boring D. exciting

2.What touched the author during the train trip?

A. The mountains along the way.

B. The friendly country people.

C. The crowds of people in the streets.

D. The simple lunch served on the train.

3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “relish” in Paragraph 2?

A. dislike B. enjoy C. release D. choose

4.What can we learn from the story?

A. Smiles brighten people up.

B. Pleasure of living in the country.

C. Reading gives people delight.

D. Comfort in traveling by train.

Recently I have read an article in a magazine. It was about the mother who was worried about her son just because of he always kept his hair long. The mother thought that was not right, but the son felt there was nothing unusually about it. Different generations have different opinion on the same thing. That is what is meaning by "the generation gap". We can see them in our daily lives. Most of our parents like listening to old songs when young people prefer pop songs. Every time my father finds me listen to rock music, he always shouted, "Shut it off. It's awful!" How can we deal the generation gap?
