If you are lost in the mountains, stay calm in the face of darkness, loneliness, and the unknown. It will greatly increase your chances of survival(生存). Many people think that preparing necessary equipment and knowing how to use it are very important, but actually eighty percent of mountain survival is your reaction to fear.

Find a hiding place.

Unnecessary labor will make you sweat and make you cold. Find a hiding place around you before trying to start your own construction. If you are in a snow-covered ar-ea, you may be able to dig a cave in deep snow for protection from the wind. You should try to hide yourself in the middle of the mountain if possible. Stay out of the valleys-cold air falls, and the valley floor can be the coldest area on the mountain.

Signal rescuers for help.

The best time to signal rescuers is during the day. Signal for help from the highest point possible-it will be easier for rescuers to see you, and any sound you make will travel farther. If you take a box of matches and a space blanket(a special blanket for traveling), build three smoky fires and put your blanket-good side fa-cing out-on the ground.

Do not walk away.

It will make finding you more difficult,as search teams will be trying to follow your path and may miss you if you have gone off in a different direction. Searchers often end up finding a car with no one in it.

If you get frostbite(冻伤), do not rewarm the affected area until you're out of danger.

You can walk on frostbitten feet, but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.

The days of multi-layer air tickets appear numbered, as the China Air Transport Association (CATA) has stopped providing paper tickets and instructed sellers to issue e-tickets. The decision is in line with an International Air Transport Association (IATA) move that requires its 261 member airlines to abandon paper tickets by the end of 2007. E-tickets will be issued once the current batch of paper tickets has been used up. The change currently only applies to domestic flights. “We haven't received notice from the CATA that paper tickets for international flights will be stopped, ”said a ticket agent in Beijing.

Customers will book tickets through airlines or ticket agents as usual, and will be given a booking reference. They will then be able to use automatic check-in facilities at airports, and receive an invoice (发票) for reimbursement (报销凭证). They can also check in as normal at the counter. Special passengers like infants and those flying to airports without automatic check-in machines can still use paper tickets.

The wide use of e-ticketing is expected to lower operational costs, which could lead to lower prices of air tickets, said an expert with the Safety Technology Centre of the General Administration of Civil Aviation. A survey conducted by the civil aviation website, www.CARNOC.com, between August 28 and October 15 showed widespread concern over the new system. Although they had the ability to take part in the online survey,43 percent of the people who answered questions in the survey said they would prefer to receive a paper ticket. While some feel more secure without the worry of a ticket, others said they did not trust sending personal details over the Internet, or worried they would not get reimbursed.

Thirty million people visit Paris every year and when you are standing in a queue at the Louvre waiting to have a look at the Mona Lisa,it is possible to think that each and every one of them is in the same room as you.

But it is possible to see the iconic sites of the City of Lights without falling into the crowded tourists.

My favourite way to enjoy Paris is to

take enough money to last a visit of at least two months. I did this when I was 20. I lived in a poor hotel on Rue St. Jacques around the corner from the Sorbonne and the Jardin du Luxembourg. Surviving on 100 francs a day, I ate baguettes, tomatoes and a jar of mayon-naise. I drank my short blacks while standing at the counter of cafes. I walked everywhere, down the city's grand avenues and up its hid-den old alleyways. I loved every single pover-ty-covered moment of that winter.

I've been back several times since for shorter trips. Each time, Paris offers new joys and discoveries.

An increasingly popular way to get that true Parisienne (巴黎女子的) touch to your trip is to rent an apartment. Brisbane author Nerida Newtown loved the “at home” feeling when she and her family realized a long-term dream by living in Paris for a few months.

If you can't manage a long stay, never fear. Jodie Minus's excitable account of her whirlwind trip to the City of Lights shows how you can get the most out of Paris in a short time. Jenny Stevens managed to show a first-time visitor much of Paris. But now it's over to you: Share your secrets and passions about Paris.

(1) The text is mainly to tell readers________.

[ ]

A.where to visit in Paris

B.some tips on how to visit Paris

C.the writer's experience of visiting Paris

D.the introduction of Paris

(2) Those who want to get tips on short trips in Paris had better contact________.

[ ]

A.the Mona Lisa

B.Jodie Minus

C.Jenny Stevens

D.the writer

(3) According to the text, “ the City of Lights” should refer to“________”.

[ ]

A.the city of Paris

B.the hotel the writer ever lived in

D.the name of a Paris' street

(4) According to the writer, in order to know better about Paris, visitors________.

[ ]

A.should read Nerida Newtown's novels first

B.had better plan a long trip there

C.must get advice from Jenny Stevens

D.should visit Louvre for the Mona Lisa

China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil-shortages, automobile manufacturers have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles(混合燃料汽车)for the Chinese market. Toyota's hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week. Let's have a look at the new car.

Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars run on a rechargeable battery and gasoline. Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional gasoline engines. They run at 99 percent of their power when the car is cruising(巡航). A specially designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration is needed.

Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is how much quieter it is than a traditional car. At this point, the car's gasoline engine is dormant(休眠). The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 km/h. If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no waste gas gives off.

The onboard(车载的)computer makes the decision about when to use a gas engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two. If you go over 24 km/h, when you step on the gas pedal(油门), you are actually telling the computer how fast you want to go.

The electronic motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. When driving at high speed, the gasoline engine not only powers the car, but also charges the batteries. Any time you use the brake, the electric motor in the wheels will work like a generator and produce electricity to recharge the batteries. As a consequence, the car's batteries will last for around 200 000 miles.

(1)The author writes this passage mainly to ________.

[ ]

A.teach people how to drive a hybrid car

B.introduce a new kind of “green” car

C.show how to save their gasoline when driving a car

D.announce plans to develop hybrid vehicles for China

(2)The first sentence probably refers to “________”.

[ ]

A.there will be more and more green land in China

B.China is still young and lacking experience

C.China's new cars are combinations of different green models

D.China has started producing environmentally friendly cars

(3)What is the most important feature of hybrid cars?

[ ]

A.They are powered by both a rechargeable battery and gasoline.

B.They are much quieter than traditional cars.

C.They only use 99 percent of their power to run up hills.

D.They have smaller engines than traditional gasoline ones.

(4)What can we conclude from the story?

[ ]

A.The batteries can be recharged at any time you want.

B.Using the brake suggests that the gasoline engine should work.

C.The batteries will last for 200 000 miles without being recharged.

D.The gasoline engine charges the batteries as well as powering the car.

Destructive insects in larger numbers are finding Alaska forests to be a comfortable home and climate change could be the wel-come mat.

Warmer winters kill fewer insects. Lon-ger, warmer summers let insects complete a life cycle and reproduce in one year instead of two. Warm winters also can damage trees and make them less able to stop insect attacks by changing the nature of snow. Instead of light snow formed at extremely cold tempera-tures, warm winters produce wet, heavy snow more likely to break the tops of spruce trees because they are not well adapted to handling big, heavy, wet snow loads.

Since 1980, spruce bark (树皮) beetles have killed mature white spruce trees on 4. 4 million acres. For lack of two cold winters on end, the numbers of the beetles there blew up while the resistance (抵抗力) of the trees was down at the same time everywhere. Most of the mature trees have been killed in some whole region of the state.

Spruce bark beetles bore into (蛀穿)trunks and feed on the live cambium layer, a thin part of tissue between bark and wood. Trees re-sist beetles with pitch, made up of hydrocarbons including up to 17 forms of terpene (松稀). The rates of those terpenes are a signal of the health of the tree. When a tree is injured, terpene rates go off in one direction.

Using complex chemical receptors (感受 器), spruce bark beetles discover differences in terpenes. Injured trees offer less resistance.

They smell the tree. If the tree's healthy, they try to avoid it Why? If they start to bore into a healthy tree, it's got a lot of pitch, and the pitch is under high pressure. It's boring in and the pitch is pushing it back out.

(1) What would be the best title for the text?

[ ]

A.The Destruction of Forests in Alaska

B.Warm Winters and Its Bad Effects

C.The Way of Spruce Trees' Living in Alaska

D.Destructive Insects on Rise in Alaska

(2) According to the text, how do warm win-ters reduce the trees' ability to resist in-sect attacks?

[ ]

A.By changing the nature of snow.

B.By offering too much water to trees.

C.By making the weather drier.

D.By increasing the insects' growth speed.

(3) The third paragraph mainly tells________.

[ ]

A.winters are warmer and warmer

B.there are more and more beetles

C.the situation of trees is much worse

D.mature trees are easy to be attacked

A mobile phone service which makes your handset (手机) scream when it's been stolen has been started, with its makers claiming it could put an end to mobile theft altogether.

The Remote XT system uses software to link customers' mobile phones directly to a secure remote server, which stores all their data from phone numbers to text messages and e-mails. If the owner's phone is lost or stolen? he can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered as stolen. The handset is then disabled, and cannot even be used if a new SIM card is put in. At the same time, the system sets off an alarm sounding like a highpitched (声音尖锐的) scream, which can only be stopped by removing the battery.

Existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally, it can be retrieved as soon as the victim gets a new phone, the system design-ers said.

“By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner, the phones become worthless and we will see the market for sto-len handsets stopped once and for all, ”said Mark Whiteman, managing director of Re-mote XT. “Such phones cause disaster for the huge criminal industry that has profited from mobile theft for too long. ”

For the moment the system is aimed at business customers and comes with a fee of 9. 99 pounds per month, possibly available to the majority of average user within two years as mobile technology advances.

According to the latest UK government statistics, mobile phone theft has risen 190 per cent in recent years, with one third of all UK robberies now only involving mobile phones. It's estimated a mobile handset is stolen every 12 seconds in Britain costing UK consumers around 390 million pounds ($ 735 million) every year.

(1) The passage mainly focuses on________.

[ ]

A.a mobile phone security system

B.the advance in mobile technology

C.suggestions on mobile phone use

D.mobile phone theft in the UK

(2) Which of the following is NOT true about the Remote XT system?

[ ]

A.It uses software to disable customers' stolen phones.

B.It takes remote control of phones sto-len or lost.

C.Owners can get their phones back with the help of it.

D.Now only business customers benefit from it.

(3) The underlined word “retrieved” (in Par-agraph 3) probably means “________”.

MONTREAL (Reuters)-Crossing the US-Canada border (边界) to go to church on a Sunday cost a US citizen $ 10 000 for breaking Washington's strict new security(安全) rules.

The expensive trip to church was a sur-prise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-doz-en people of Township 15, crossing the bor-der is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church.

There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5 530-mile border between Canada and the US-which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings.

As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Cana-da, as usual. The US customs (海关) station in this area is closed on Sundays, so he just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, fol-lowing a tightening of border security. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法).

Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border check-point.

Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I'm living in a prison, ”he said.

(1) We learn from the text that Richard Al-bert is ________ .

[ ]

A.an American living in Township 15

B.a Canadian living in a Quebec village

C.a Canadian working in a customs station

D.an American working in a Canadian church

(2) Albert was fined because he ________.

[ ]

A.failed to obey traffic rules

B.broke the American security rules

C.worked in St. Pamphile without a pass

D.damaged the gate of the customs office

(3) The underlined word “ detour ” in Para-graph 5 means ________ .

[ ]

A.a drive through the town

B.a race across the fields

C.a round about way of travelling

D.a journey in the mountain area

(4) What would be the best title for the text?

A.A Cross-country Trip.

B.A Special Border Pass.

C.An Unguarded Border.

D.An Expensive Church Visit.
