An anti-whalingship called Esperanza, belonging to the environmental group Greenpeace, headed to Japan to show their disagreement with Japanese whalers in the Antarctic.
Japan owns a whaling fleet in the Antarctic, in the name of research. Because of a big fire on the main whaling ship, the fleet is now sailing back to Japan. The fleet has caught hundreds of whales since it set out in November last year, Naruko said.
"We began a positive dialogue from ship to ship in the Southern Ocean during the emergency with the fleet,"said Junichi Sato, an official of Greenpeace. "We plan to continue and broaden the dialogue from ship to shore when Esperanza comes to Japan."
Greenpeace believes Japan plans to repair the whaling ship and continue whaling in the Southern Ocean. But they said, "What we saw in the Southern Ocean should be a clear signal to the government and people of Japan that this must be the last season that a whaling fleet goes to the Southern Ocean."
One Japanese sailor was killed in the fire and the fire-hit ship was warned by Greenpeace that if its oil and fuel went into the sea, it would pollute the environment.
"Whaling on the high seas will stop only when the Japanese government promises to put an end to it."Thomas said. On the other hand, Japan says whaling is a cultural tradition and that its whale hunting is for scientific purposes. But the whale hunting has caused a lot of trouble for environmental groups, who say it is cruel and breaks a 1986 global law on whaling. The whale meat ends up in restaurants and on supermarket shelves.
