The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood, when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, whether you’ve just eaten and what sort of drinks you’ve had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.

In fact, your driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks. Even if you’re below the legal limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving has been affected by alcohol. It takes about an hour for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy drinking session in the evening you might find that you’re still over the legal limit early in the morning. In addition, if you’ve had a few drinks at lunch time, another one or two drinks in the early evening may well put you over the legal limit.

In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had, the more certain they were that they could drive a test course through a set of moveable posts... and the less able they were to do it! So the only way to be sure you’re safe is not to drink at all.

Alcohol is a major cause of road traffic accidents. One in three of the drivers killed in road accidents have levels of alcohol which are over the legal limit, and road accidents after drinking are the biggest cause of death among young men.

It is important to remember that driving after you have been drinking doesn’t just affect you. If you’re involved in an accident, it affects a lot of other people as well, not only the person you might kill or injure.

73. The amount of alcohol a person can drink before reaching the legal limit ____.

A. is 80 milligrams of pure alcohol

B. is about three standard drinks

C. is different for different people

D. mainly depends on his body weight

74. According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?

A. After a few drinks at noon, another one or two drinks late in the afternoon may put you over the legal limit.

B. The more alcohol the drivers have, the more likely they are to pass the driving test.

C. If you have had a standard drink, you may drive an hour later.

D. If you want to drive safely, you had better not drink at all.

75. This article urges you to remember that if you drive after drinking ____.

A. you may be taken to court by the police

B. you may put your family in danger

C. you may kill or hurt another road-user

D. you may put many other people in a miserable life

D

A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.

Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.

In addition, the government could take the responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

69. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The problems faced by the old in society.

B. Why we should take the responsibility for the old.

C. How we can improve the lives of the old.

D. Where the old can go to get their pensions.

70. According to the passage, how can the employers help to improve the lives of retired people?

A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.

B. Increase savings levels for retirement during their working years.

C. Bring down the price of food and transport for the old.

D. Make available pensions for those who have retired.

71. What can be concluded from the passage?

A. Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.

B. Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.

C. Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people.

D. There is no single solution to the problems of the old.

72. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly now mainly because _____.

A. it is too poor to care for its citizens

B. it has no interest in caring for them

C. it thinks the companies should do so

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.

The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long-held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart. Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces.

For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.

During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol levels.

65. The passage is mainly about ____.

A. the high incidence of heart disease in some countries

B. the changes in people’s diet

C. the daily fish consumption of people in different cultures

D. the effect of fish eating on people’s health

66. We can infer from the passage that there are fewer heart disease deaths _____.

A. in the countries with good production of fish

B. in countries of the yellow-skin race

C. in the countries with high consumption of fish

D. in highly-developed countries

67. The underlined part “This relationship”may refer to the connection between _____ and the level of heart disease.

A. the amount of fish eaten

B. regular fish-eating

C. the kind of fish eaten

D. people of different areas

68. In which section of a newspaper can we read this passage?

A. Ads. B. Movies. C. Briefs. D. Health and diet.

In the past ten years, America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to supply players.

When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stem happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.

The NBA is now planning to take China by storm.

“Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stern. The strategy in China is television. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcast in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil.

“It doesn’t matter where the players come from; all the NBA teams now know that they have to look internationally,” said Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last season, many people can earn the respect of their American peers. Others, such as the Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming — number one draft pick in 2002 — and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic — number two overall in this year’s draft — are icons(偶像)in-waiting. It is the ultimate(根本的) revolution — the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball.

61. As to that more and more non-American basketball players join the NBA, the author’s attitude is _____.

A. supportive B. careless

C. negative D. doubtful

62. The underlined part in this passage probably means ______.

A. the NBA intends to make China one of its marketing centers

B. the NBA is planning to set up some training centers in China

C. there’ll be a big storm when the NBA comes to China

D. the NBA’s live basketball games will be broadcast on all the TVs in China

63. What seems to be the biggest change that is happening to the NBA?

A. The NBA is expecting more foreign players to join the league.

B. China’s rapid development in sports affects the NBA.

C. Yao Ming has taken the place of Michael Jordan.

D. The NBA will stop teaching the world how to play basketball.

64. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. The Non-American Basketball Players.

B. NBA Is Coming to China.

C. The Foreign Ties that Boost the NBA.

D. NBA Is Making Big Progress.
