What is American clothing or fashion? Can you think of a piece of clothing that is connected with American culture? Your answer must be blue jeans. Do you know the history of these well-loved pants?
When we talk about jeans, we may think of Levi Strauss. He did not invent jeans, but he was considered the first person to make and sell great numbers of them. He was born in Bavaria, an area that today is part of Germany. In 1847, he and his family came to the United States. Levi Strauss opened a small store, first in New York, then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These pants were especially useful for miners (矿工) in California. They needed clothing made from a strong material. Jeans are usually made from a heavy cotton cloth.
Levi Strauss partnered with a clothing maker named Jacob Davis. They worked together and found a way to make the jeans stronger. In 1873, the government gave Strauss and Davis a patent for their invention. That meant no one else could legally copy it without their permission (许可).
Cowboys wore jeans in the old Wild West. In the 1950s, people saw famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing jeans in movies. Today jeans still come in blue mainly but also lots of other colors. They can also differ widely in price. You might find jeans for 15 dollars in a store. However, they can also sell for thousands of dollars a pair. Some people like to buy jeans that look fresh and new. Others like to buy new jeans that are torn and look old. I had traveled a long distance from India to America in order to join my mother, who had been here for three years and hoped that America would help my future.
On the first day, with anxiety on the one hand and fear on the other, I opened the door of the classroom slowly. Everyone’s eyes were on me as I entered the room. Without paying attention to them, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. In a soft voice, he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I chose the seat closest to the door instead of the corner where all of the boys were sitting. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we were given seats by teachers. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the images produced by the projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had. In America, the teachers had a fun way of making hard things so easy that a three-year-old child could do them.
At the end of the day, I was on my way to the school bus which we didn’t have in India either. I found my bus easily and sat down inside silently. I was thinking: today wasn’t so bad.
As time passed, I developed some friendships and started to love my school. I found out that the US citizens have many opportunities but not everyone is using them. And some of them cannot realize that people in other countries are struggling for these opportunities.

A. it’s difficult for foreign students to follow the teachers in America
B. American schools are just the same as Indian schools
C. Americans can make full use of their opportunities for success
D. there are many differences between American schools and Indian schools
46. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. My struggle in America B. Friendships in America
C. My first day at an American school D. American school life

Dear Marc,
From your last letter I can see you have some friends and that they also like you. But what you’re lacking is a social life. When your best friends move away at any age, they leave a big hole in your life and that’s hard for you. I think your classmates would probably be surprised that you haven’t been hanging out with any of them just as you might be surprised why some of them have also been so lonely.
Here are some of my ideas of changing your situation. If there are any new kids in your school, they’ll probably be excited to hang out with you or have you show them fun places in your town. Sometimes inviting someone who might become your friend to study for a test together or to go for pizza after a game is a good way to turn someone you know into a friend or to get to know someone better. Talking to different kinds of people is a way to meet different types of people. You might also try joining a new club, like doing some voluntary (志愿的) work in your community or for your school play.
You’re already doing all the right things in your school and in your neighborhood. And people like you for what you do. In the first year, students have far less stress than they do in their final year when they are prepared for going to colleges. Therefore, you might think about getting some part-time work to fill your time. It could give you more practical experience and a chance to meet new people, too.
Good luck!
Amy

A. To show Marc how to learn his lessons well.
